EPIC ROCK BALLADS-EPISODE 9: ALL ABOUT EVE-WHAT KIND OF FOOL

When it comes to atmospheric Rock ballads, it really doesn’t get much better
then this, An underrated classic from an underrated band.

Can’t see the wood for all of the trees
Can’t hear the wind for the breeze that whispers
Voice in your head, you like what it said
So what can you do but listen to it?

What kind of fool
Lays all that’s precious to waste?
What kind of fool
Leaves all their treasure to rust in the rain?
They’ll need it again when the sky clears
What kind of fool
Won’t discover the jewel
‘Til the dust clears ?
Fools like us

Fools who want more than they’ve treasured before
Wanting the dawn of the brightest morning
Reach for the stars ’cause they’re sweeter by far
Than the moon ‘though she’s brighter
And closer to you

Ballads-Episode 9: All About Eve-What Kind of Fool

DEAR MOMMY…

I am not going to lie, the text of the letters are the innocent words of an
11-year-old boy, The contents seem harmless enough, not complex at all, but with
childish wisdom.

However, put in the context of the time the letters were written, it makes the
text devastatingly heartbreaking, with no coming back.

Dear Mommy,

How are you? I got your two letters. I’m healthy. Now you don’t have a stomach
ache any more. Mommy, I think you need bread. I’m going to Block 3. I have just
enough for myself now. OK, so don’t worry about me. Mommy, when the Army
Clothing Depot (A.B.A) was working, were we 3 better off? Hopefully, we’ll all
be together soon. When I have bread, I’ll send you some, you know that I will,
mommy.

Mommy, I know what it means to live on the allocations. Mommy, please send me
some writing paper. That’s why I haven’t written. Our block is going to be
gassed. [He means fumigated.]

“Mommy, I kiss you, give my regards to Paula. Soon we will be cooking potatoes
again in Sewing Workshop 5.

The letter was written by Siegfried Rapaport in 1944 to his mother while he was
imprisoned in the Stutthof concentration camp.

In Stutthof, Siegfried was separated from his sister and mother, but they
managed to stay in contact by letter.

The letters are written with sincerity and a sense of hope that can only can
come from a child. But his hopes were never realized. Siegfried was murdered in
1945 during a death march from Stutthof. His mother died of typhus about two
weeks after liberation. Paula, who survived, gave the letter to her sister
Varda, who later passed it on to Yad Vashem for safekeeping.

IDES OF MARCH

A few months ago I had the pleasure to interview Jim Peterik known from
Survivor, but also from “The Tides of March”. However, this blog will not be
about the band, although the name is clearly inspired by the actual event called
Ides of March.

Julius Caesar must be without a doubt the most well-known historical figure from
the Roman Empire, and definitely one of the best-known people in world history.
A fact that may not be common knowledge is that his heir and nephew would become
the wealthiest man to have ever lived. He had an estimated net worth of $4.6
trillion when counting for inflation.

March 15, 44 BC, would turn out to be a dramatic day for Julius Caesar. He would
be stabbed 23 times. Julius Caesar was assassinated by a group of senators.
during a meeting of the Senate at the Curia of Pompey of the Theatre of Pompey
in Rome. They claimed to be acting over fears that Caesar’s unprecedented
concentration of power during his dictatorship was undermining the Roman
Republic. At least 60 to 70 senators were party to the conspiracy, led by Marcus
Junius Brutus, Gaius Cassius Longinus, and Decimus Junius Brutus Albinus.
Despite the death of Caesar, the conspirators were unable to restore the
institutions of the Republic. The ramifications of the assassination led to his
martyrdom, the Liberators’ civil war and ultimately to the Principate period of
the Roman Empire.

Julius Caesar was immensely popular with the people of Rome. He was a successful
military leader who expanded the republic to include parts of what are now
Spain, France, Germany, Switzerland, and Belgium. Caesar was also a popular
author who wrote about his travels, theories, and political views. Many members
of the Senate, a group of appointed (not elected) political leaders, resented
Caesar’s popularity and arrogance. After Caesar attained the status of dictator
for life in 44 B.C.E., these officials decided to strike the ultimate blow
against his power.

The term Ides derives from the Latin word iduare (Latin: “to divide”), with the
full moon serving as the division point in the middle of each month. The phrase
is widely known from William Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar,” when a soothsayer
warned Caesar to “beware the Ides of March.” That brings me back to the band
“The Ides of March” bassist Bob Bergland suggested the name after reading the
very Shakespeare play ‘Julius Caesar’ in high school.

EPIC ROCK—EPISODE 26: KILLED BY DEATH-MOTORHEAD

“Killed by Death” is a song by the English heavy metal band Motörhead. Released
in 1984, in 7″ and 12″ vinyl pressings. It peaked at number 51 in the UK Singles
Chart.

Motörhead anthem, loaded with noise and sleaze. Lemmy oozes attitude (and makes
references to his junk being a lizard and snake) and is a no-good son of a bitch
to deal with up until he is “killed by death.”

The song itself has been a mainstay of live performances since its release. As
with many Motörhead songs, the lyrics show Lemmy’s skill at composing lyrics
which are at the same time menacing and tongue-in-cheek. Another common theme is
Lemmy’s use of animal images. Phrases such as “If you squeeze my lizard, I’ll
put my snake on you, I’m a romantic adventure, And I’m a reptile too” recall the
song “Love Me like a Reptile” from the earlier Ace of Spades album. The second
verse also contains the line, “I’m a lone-wolf ligger”

Shut up!

If you squeeze my lizard
I’ll put my snake on you
I’m a romantic adventurer
And a reptile too

But it don’t make no difference
‘Cause I ain’t gonna be, easy, easy
The only time I’m easy’s when I’m
Killed by death, killed by death
Killed by death, come on!

I’m a lone wolf ligger
But I ain’t no pretty boy
I’m a backbone shiver
And I’m a bundle of joy

But it don’t make no difference
‘Cause I ain’t gonna be, easy, easy
The only time I’m easy’s when I’m
Killed by death, killed by death
Killed by death, come on!

Killed by death, Killed by death
Killed by death, come on!
Come on, I said you’re killed by death
Come on!
Killed by

Killed by death
Killed by death
Killed by death, ha-ha-ha-ha!
Killed by death
Killed by death
Killed by death
Aah!

Killed by death
Killed by death
Killed by death
Killed by a bunch of death!

Killed by death
Killed by death
Killed by death
Shout out your mouth, shout out your mouth!

Come on!
Killed by death
Killed by death
Killed by death

I’m dead, I’m dead, I’m dead, I’m dead
I’m dead, I’m dead
Dead, dead, dead, killed by death
Aah!

THE OTHER CONCENTRATION CAMPS

One might be forgiven to think that the picture above is of a Nazi train
deporting victims to the East. However, that is not the case. it is a picture of
Polish families who are deported to Siberia as part of the Soviet Union’s
relocation plan in 1941.

I believe that the USSR, and particularly Russia always got too much credit for
their part as the allied troops. People seem to have forgotten that between 1
September 1939, and 22 June 1941, the Soviets were fighting with the Nazis, and
there laid the foundation for the Holocaust together with the Nazis.

The USSR also murdered en mass, not only their enemies but also their own
people. Citizens who were not in line with the Soviet communist view would end
up in Gulags. Just as with the Nazis, it didn’t take a lot for the Soviets to
find an excuse to put people away.

The Gulags were Soviet labour camps and accompanying detention and transit camps
and prisons from the 1920s to the mid-1950s.

The word “gulag” was born as an acronym. It stood for Glavnoe Upravlenie
Lagerei, which translates into English as, Main Camp Administration. Two factors
drove Stalin to expand the gulag prisons at a merciless pace. The first was the
Soviet Union’s desperate need to industrialize.

The other force at work was Stalin’s Great Purge, sometimes called the Great
Terror. It was a crackdown on all forms of dissent, real and imagined, across
the Soviet Union. After the invasion by Nazi Germany of Poland, which marked the
start of World War II in Europe, the Soviet Union invaded and annexed eastern
parts of the Second Polish Republic. In 1940 the Soviet Union occupied Estonia,
Latvia, Lithuania, Bessarabia (now the Republic of Moldova) and Bukovina.
According to some estimates, hundreds of thousands of Polish citizens and
inhabitants of the other annexed lands, regardless of their ethnic origin, were
arrested and sent to the Gulag camps.

The dead bodies of political prisoners, murdered by the secret police, lie
inside of a prison camp.
Tarnopil, Ukraine. July 10, 1941.

By 1936 the Gulag held a total of 5,000,000 prisoners, a number that was
probably equaled or exceeded every subsequent year until Stalin died in 1953

Prisoners in the Gulag could survive for many years and there was a constant
stream of prisoners being released. However, in terms of numbers, far more
people suffered in the Gulag than in the Nazi camps. The types of suffering were
different though.

Although women were housed in separate barracks, they were often mistreated much
worse than male prisoners.

They were often the victims of rape and violence at the hands of both inmates
and guards. Many reported the most effective survival strategy was to take a
“prison husband” someone who would exchange protection or rations for sexual
favours.

If a woman had children, she would have to divide her rations to feed them,
often as little as 140 grams of bread per day.

However, for some of the female prisoners, simply being allowed to keep their
own children was a blessing; many of the children in gulags were shipped off to
distant orphanages. Often these mothers could never find their children after
leaving the camps.

Sometimes, the Gulag authorities released pregnant women and women with young
children in special amnesties.

The route would come to be known as the “Road of Bones” because the skeletons of
the men who died building it were used in its foundation.

Fast forward to 2024, and although with a different name, the Gulags are still
in Siberia

KRAKOW

Today marks the 81st anniversary of the liquidation of the Krakow ghetto. Rather
than posting photographs, I thought it would be better to read the testimonies
of two who survived.

On March 13-14, 1943, the SS and police carried out the operation, shooting some
2,000 Jews in the ghetto. The SS transferred another 2,000 Jews, those capable
of work and the surviving members of the Jewish Council and the Jewish police
force (Ordnungsdienst), to the Plaszow forced-labor camp. The rest of the Jews,
approximately 3,000, were deported to the Auschwitz-Birkenau killing center in
two transports,

Willie Sterner:
“Then, my father, my brothers, and I were pushed into another cattle car, which
soon began to move. We too were pressed in like sardines in a can; there was no
room at all to move. After spending many terrible hours in the cattle car, our
train arrived in Krakow. Tired and hungry, we were pushed into military trucks
and driven to the Krakow ghetto.

The Krakow ghetto was yet another place of horror, an ugly, dirty place. During
the month that we were there, we were terrorized by the Nazis and by many of the
OD, the Jewish police. We had little food or medical help, so many people died
from illness and starvation. There were so many corpses lying on the streets
that nobody paid any attention — we just walked over them. Our people died so
fast that it was impossible to take care of them all. The burial squad was
overworked, tired, hungry, and stressed. We were homeless and dressed like
beggars, wearing old, dirty, torn clothing, and most of us had no shoes. Little
children had no shoes for their small feet and wore rags. Hungry, dirty, and
lonely, they asked passersby for food, but it was impossible to find a helping
hand. There was so little food. Many of the children couldn’t even walk anymore
and lay on the sidewalks. It was heartbreaking.

We were the lost people. We were nobodies. We had so little strength that we
felt we couldn’t even think anymore; our minds felt shut down. We lived with
indescribable brutality. We didn’t know where our loved ones were. We were no
longer a proud Jewish people.”

Tauba Biber:
“This one morning, orders – ‘get out, get out’ – and whatever. By then we only
had a few bits belongings – you, we grabbed the belongings and lined up to march
to Plaszow. Plaszow is the outskirts of Krakow, and it, in Plaszow children were
not allowed, older people were not allowed and there were shot on the spot. But
some people took a chance and smuggled in some children in the bag, in the
rucksack, whatever way the could. Plaszow was a Jewish cemetery. When we got to
Plaszow, as we arrived through the gates and it wasn’t even ready – it was no
huts even built for us – we saw already three men hanging. Frightened, I, I just
don’t know, and when I think back, we must have been completely already numb,
without no feeling, we just obeyed and did what we had to do. There were
inspections by the Gestapo. So the children had no right to be there, so for
some, something happened that they decided, they knew that, they found out that
there are children in the camp, so they decided to set up a nursery. So of
course the parents were glad, the children would be able, will be looked after
in the nursery, so of course the children were put there. And it didn’t take
long, maybe two weeks after, we were standing on the appell, and the music was
blaring – always in the most terrifying moments there was music. We see from a
distance a lorry, an open lorry, with the children. Next to me was standing a
mother with twins, two little girls, if there were 10, on the appell and they
were going around looking – the Gestapo – if there was any children, or anybody
that shouldn’t be there, and these two children clinging to their mother,
‘mother they’re coming, they’re going to take us away’. And so they did. And
this lorry, while we were standing there on the appell, this lorry with the
children drove off and never seen again. And that’s how those parents lost their
children, with a trick that the children will be looked after. Well when I think
back today – I don’t know – how can anybody survive? The first two years when we
were still at home, with family, and knowing the peasants in our town, it wasn’t
so bad, because the peasants were always helping, bringing us food, in exchange
for other goods, but in the camps, that was impossible. And how we survived on
this black water in the morning that was supposed to be coffee, or the grey soup
at lunchtime with the little square of black bread that was like lime, and when
we ate it, we didn’t feel any different. It didn’t satisfy in any way, and we
were forever hungry…If you’re tired, you’re scared, you’re hungry, lack of sleep
and always in fear from one minute to the next, we didn’t know what’s going to
happen to us.”

THE THEFT OF A CHURCH BELL

The German Reich Commissioner , in the Netherlands, Arthur Seyss-Inquart issued
the second metal ordinance (Metallgutverordnung) on July 23, 1942. This meant,
among other things, that the church bells would be requisitioned for the benefit
of the German war industry. On October 11 of the same year, Seyss-Inquart
referred to his decision in a speech. He said, among other things, that it was a
“completely natural measure” and that it has “been working that way for
centuries.”

The bells would be melted and the metal would be used for armery and war
machinery.

The Germans initially left monumental clocks (from before 1600) alone, these
clocks were marked with an ‘M’. The population generally watched with
resignation as bells were removed from church towers. For many people it was a
sign that the Germans were losing; After all, they had to take refuge in a
simple church bell. A frequently used expression at that time was ‘bells from
the tower, war lost’.

On Thursday, March 11, 1943, the bell was removed from the church tower of Baarn
at 3:15 p.m. This bell originated from the 16th century. Showing that nothing
was sacred to the Nazis. There must have been Christians among these Nazis, why
they didn’t speak up I don’t know.

MY INTERVIEW WITH JACKIE YOUNG—A HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR

My interview with Jackie Young, a Holocaust survivor:

Jackie Young (born Jona Spiegel) was born in December 1941 in Vienna, Austria,
but raised by adoptive parents in England. He talks about slowly learning about
his own past, which his adoptive parents had kept from him despite his own faint
memories and hints mentioned by relatives.

Young, adopted by a Jewish couple from North London, never spoke about his past.
But, when he was nine, he discovered he was adopted. It did not matter until,
when he was a teenager, his grandmother told him he was born in Austria.

Young miraculously survived as an orphaned infant for two years and eight months
at the Terezin (Theresienstadt) camp ghetto in Czechoslovakia. The Nazis
deported him when he was an infant to Maly Trostinec, near Minsk, where his
mother, Elsa Spiegel, was deported and murdered.

Elsa Spiegel handed her baby, named Yona Jakob Spiegel, born at the
Rothschild-Spital (Jewish hospital) on December 18, 1941, to an orphanage before
her deportation. Young found two accounts of this, one saying he was three and a
half months old and another saying he was five and a half months old.

Young was deported to Terezin in September 1942 and was interned there between
the ages of nine months and three and a half years. He has been able to
establish that he was the sole survivor among the 15 children without parents
who were together with him on the same transport to the camp. He survived the
camp. After the war, and sent to the UK as part of the Windermere children.

After a while, he was in the care of a young family who adopted him when he was
nine years old.

Taken from his memoirs, Lost and Waiting to be Found:

“I gradually began to understand what being adopted meant, and it now became
clear to me why I had always had a feeling of being different from other
children. I could remember back to when I was five years old, playing with lots
of boys and girls, and one day some of us were ushered forward to meet two
people—a young man and a woman. They wanted to take us out for a ride in the
country. One day I was to go alone with these people to stay with them for a few
days, and obviously, that visit was to lead to my being adopted.

Every so often, I tried to question my parents where was I born, and where were
my real parents. But they usually fobbed me off with the statement that they
loved me very much, and that was all that mattered. In retrospect, my adopted
parents were behaving protectively, they did not want me to be hurt, but I
started to become increasingly frustrated. I noticed that at school—if I were
naughty, the teachers would tell me off in the nicest possible way and even
apologise for hitting me. This seemed very strange, and I quickly began to
realize that I possessed a lever which enabled me to get my own way with my
parents, providing I didn’t ask questions. Looking back I can see that I was
thoroughly spoilt.”

Below is the interview with him.

MY INTERVIEW WITH ANDREW LASZLO

This is my interview with Andrew Laszlo, Jr.

I spoke to Andrew Laszlo about his father, Andrew Laszlo Sr., about his career
as a cinematographer of such movies as First Blood, Star Trek V, The Last
Frontier, Streets of Fire, Southern Comfort, The Owl and the Pussy Cat and The
Warriors and also the original series of Shogun.

We discussed the survival of his father during the Holocaust. The following
passage was taken from Andrew’s Facebook page, “Footnote to History,” which is
also the title of his father’s memoir:

“In March of 1945, When the Germans knew they were losing the war, they put my
father and other prisoners on a train to Theresienstadt. No one knows for sure
why, but the most likely reason was they thought the allies would go easier on
them if they didn’t see 60,000 starving bodies. The Nazis played one last trick.
They mounted machine guns on the train. Seeing the guns, Allied planes mistook
the train for a troop transport and bombed it. My father and his friend,
Frogface, broke open a door and headed for the forest. When they were running
six feet apart, Frogface was hit with shrapnel and blown to pieces. My father
survived again. After the bombing, he threw the machine guns off and painted Red
Crosses on the roof. They arrived in Theresienstadt safely. He was placed in the
Hannover Barracks. By the grace of God, he saw his father one last time at
Theresienstadt before his father contracted Typhus and died. My father had
survived Bergen-Belsen, but the horrors of Theresienstadt loomed ahead.”

Some of Andrew Laszlo, Sr‘s credits for television shows were Naked City,
Sergeant Bilko, The Beatles at Shea Stadium, and the already mentioned Shogun.
He was also there, saving the day with his ingenuity, when Ed Sullivan first
interviewed Fidel Castro in Havana, Cuba.

This is my interview with Andrew Laszlo.

Finally, this is some advice we should heed attention to.
