ABOUT THE AUTHOR
TOM BEAUJOUR is a journalist as well as a co-founder and former editor-in-chief
of Revolver, America’s premier hard rock and heavy metal monthly. Beaujour has
produced and mixed albums by Nada Surf, Guided by Voices, the Juliana Hatfield
Three, and many others.
RICHARD BIENSTOCK is a journalist whose writing has appeared in the New York
Times, Rolling Stone, Billboard, Spin, and other publications. He is a former
senior editor of Guitar World magazine and executive editor of Guitar Aficionado
magazine. He has authored and co-authored several books, among them Kurt Cobain:
Montage of Heck.

This is well done compilation of anecdotes from that era.
A "Please Kill Me" for another genre and scene.
If you liked that book, you'll enjoy this.
A wealth of knowledge and insider stories from the people who actually lived
them, all first hand.
Most of them funny, some sad, but all entertaining.
A must read for any fan of the genre and times.
Even for non-specific fans but people who enjoy music in general.
That's the positive side but there is a gaping, glaring flaw.
Arguably, the two biggest artists who defined that era are relegated to
essentially asides and footnotes.
Bon Jovi personified that era and without question, was the biggest success.
Slippery When Wet was the 80s equivalent of Carole King's Tapestry.
Not only that, but they were able to escape the stigma and actually became more
successful post 80s.
Not much on the band except within the context of Skid Row, who fill more pages
than they should.
Also missing is Def Leppard and the gigantic influence of both Pyromania and
Hysteria.
Pyromania opened the door, there is no question about that, and Slippery When
Wet blew the door off the hinges.
Hysteria became a sonic and songwriting standard never to be topped.
So little on these two bands that it makes you wonder if the issue was they
declined to contribute or be interviewed.
That's the only possible excuse for such a glaring omission.
It's like leaving Tom Brady out of a book about the Patriots.
Some of the acts in the book fall into the "No one cared then and no one cares
now" category.
Still fun reads but a shoulder shrug at best.
And where is Richard Black and Shark Island?
Anyone from that time, especially those on the Strip, are acutely aware Axl
stole everything from Richard, and even admits it.
The pluses outweigh the minuses.
A good read nonetheless.

For example on pg. 410, the preface paragraph states that " The group's
[Trixter] 1992 sophmore album Hear! was released two weeks after Nirvana's
Nevermind and was virtually ignored. "
Nevermind was released on September 24, 1991. Trixter's Hear! was released
October 13, 1992, does that seem like a two week time span to you? Just bad
facts and it may even be more of a malice thing in order to push the narrative
that "Nirvana instantly killed" hair metal. Honestly, I think Stephen Pearcy's
Rat N Roll is better. Its a good read but I can't trust anything if you are
making mistakes this big.

If you were lucky enough to have been there and were expecting this book to
bring back memories then you’ll be disappointed . It comes across as its been
transcribed from talk show interviews. It’s mostly about reps and the business
of music at the time. It’s not about the amazing time we had hanging out on the
strip, at the clubs, the restaurants, the parties.. The 80’s were spacial and
this book just doesn’t grasp the magic of that time.

If you read the book "I Want My MTV" and the many different perspectives offered
from it you will enjoy this book, as it's done in the same style for each
chapter (photographers, producers, band members, club owners etc, etc). By
someone who thought there was nothing more to offer after reading many of the
80's metal biographies and the debauched lifestyle, it's quite entertaining. I
also enjoyed the photos, most of which I had not seen before. The rare pro
picture of Jake E. Lee in an earlier version of Ratt with Stephen Pearcy was
worth the price of admission alone. It also provides alot of details on the
earlier days of many of the bands. One example provided the seed of George
Lynch's very early animosity towards Don Dokken with Don's "borrowing" of "Paris
Is Burning". Let's just say no good deed goes unpunished. Another nugget was why
Jake E. Lee left Ratt ( Stephen Pearcy was kind of being a jerk to him).

Y’all, I just got this book today. I said, oh, rockin’. I’ll just read the intro
because I’m trying to learn Spanish and I had other reading to do. 120 pages
later.... I was six years old in 1980, and by the time I got into hard rock,
these bands were making their most expensive, most promoted records. It was
intoxicating. I wish I’d been old enough and lived far enough south to go to the
Whisky and Gazzarri’s. Alas. But I’m a giant fan to this day and this book is SO
FUN! You’ll recognize all the names , even the managers and producers because we
all read every word of those liner notes, didn’t we? This book makes me smile
and laugh and if you are into 80s hard rock, it’s a must-read. Well written by
journalists with excellent rock credentials. Buy it.

This is not a well-written masterpiece like The Dirt. Much like Dave Mustaine's
last book (which was not good) this is a massive collection of quotes copied and
pasted together to form many stories. I do give the authors credit as they have
done a great job turning this format into a readable and enjoyable book. I do
recommend it, I just wouldn't include it among the great rock novels.

Great book about the Greatest decade. A trip down memory lane, and the way the
book was structured was really nice and easy to read. The 80s were an AWESOME
time to be alive.I almost feel bad for people who weren’t there and didn’t get
to experience it. It was magical. It really was.

Great book, read many books about the hair metal scene in the 80’s and they
tended to be just lists of albums released each year or regurgitated stories
that everyone has heard before. This is made up of interviews with the key
players from the scene, predominantly the band's that came up through the sunset
strip in LA. A great read and some fascinating insights into a time when having
fun was just as important as they quality of the music. Recommended for anyone
who grew ip loving this music in the decade of excess.

For those of us old enough, 80's metal was the thing. It didn't matter where you
were in the world, it happened. OK, so some of it may not be PC nowadays, but it
was about having a good time, and getting away from the drudgery of life as it
had become.
This book provided a useful insight and reminder of names, faces and places some
of us can never, and will never, forget. For those who weren't there, you could
say this is a tale of caution, but to be honest, you missed out on one hell of a
party!
The interviews are well presented, and the narrative takes you through some of
the highs and lows that some of the final sections of the "tale" alude to.
Missed 80's metal? This book will help inform you, and show you, what it was
like being a desperado, slogging it out on The Strip!
