THE UK HEALTH SYSTEM CAN TAKE UP TO A MONTH TO RECOVER FROM HACKER ATTACKS

Carl | Posted on August 13, 2022 |

Earlier this month, the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) was hacked and
several programs were harmed, including non-emergency hotline 111.

According to the SSN itself, customers of these services can take up to a month
to recover all normal procedures. At the same time, the vendor tries to block
the impact of an already confirmed ransomware attack.

On the morning of August 4, Advanced was able to quickly reverse the attack that
hit systems other than the Adastra platform. So far, no other attacks could be
identified and all services are under control.

However, this was only possible thanks to its consumers in the health and social
care area, as they were able to access the infrastructure by hosting items to be
disposed of properly. However, this ended up leaving several very important
services out of the air, such as ambulance dispatches, appointment scheduling,
emergency prescriptions, after-hours care, and patient referrals.

Simon Short, COO of Advanced, said, “We continue to make progress in our
response to this incident. We are doing this following a rigorous step-by-step
approach, in consultation with our customers and the relevant authorities ”.

“We thank all interested parties for their patience and understanding as our
team works 24 hours a day to resume service as safely as possible. For the
latest update on our response, please visit ours place for more information.”

Advanced also reported that it is working with the NHS and the National Cyber
Security Center (NCSC) to complete all the actions performed so far, after which
the NHS can resume online services.

In other releases, he informed that the current scenario is that it will be
necessary to have contingency plans, meaning pen and paper, for another three to
four weeks, but they are working to anticipate this program.

Advanced is currently in the process of rebuilding and restoring the damaged
systems in a separate and secure environment. This includes implementing
additional blocking rules and privileged account restrictions for your team,
scanning and fixing all affected systems, restoring all credentials, deploying
new endpoint detection and response agents, and implementing 24/7 monitoring so
your services can work again.

However, according to the health care journal HSJ, there is a growing warning
from several NHS Trusts and organizations using advanced services that
confidential patient information was stolen during the breach.

It is worth mentioning that during the second quarter of 2022, the information
reported by data management expert Kroll, shows that health institutions grow
90% in attack problems if we take it compared to the first three months of the
year, fueled from the ransomware.

“It is worrying to see the healthcare sector so dramatically climb the
industry’s most targeted list at a time when services are undoubtedly still
under pressure as they recover from the tense environment caused by Covid19.
Ransomware is always disruptive, but its ability to disrupt business operations
becomes more significant in an environment where business continuity means
saving lives, “said Laurie Iacono, Associate Managing Director, Cyber Risk at
Kroll.

“The legacy of the pandemic can perhaps also be seen in the vulnerability of
external remote services. In the second quarter, we saw many ransomware groups
exploit remote environments by using security holes in these tools to compromise
networks, ”Iacono reported.

“All organizations, and especially healthcare ones, would do well to test the
resilience of their external remote services and ransomware readiness in light
of this latest report.”
