FOOD BANK FOR MONTEREY COUNTY PREPARES TO GIVE AWAY 50,000 MEAL KITS BEFORE

Starting at 9am today, people will be lining up at locations in Pajaro,
Greenfield and Gonzales to receive meal kits from the Food Bank for Monterey
County for a Thanksgiving feast. Distributions follow at 10am in King City, 4pm
and 6pm in Salinas, and so on through Wednesday, Nov. 22. (Distributions began
on Monday, Nov. 20 in Seaside, Marina, San Ardo and Salinas.)

All told, the nonprofit is distributing 50,000 meal kits in the three days
before the Thanksgiving holiday. Half of those are a turkey dinner with the
fixings, and half are pozole kits, with ingredients to make the hominy stew.

“We are committed to culturally appropriate foods," says Melissa Kendrick, CEO
of the Food Bank. "[Pozole kits] have grown and grown.”

The Thanksgiving kits come with a turkey or turkey breast, along with packaged
ingredients to sides like gravy, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce and
green beans. The pozole kits come with a bag of fresh produce including cabbage,
cilantro, limes, onions, garlic, jalapeños and radishes.

Distributions take place in partnership with dozens of nonprofits, faith
communities, city governments and schools that help coordinate pick-ups, but the
Food Bank team, including volunteers, has been behind the scenes prepping and
packing boxes. Their preparations began back in June with planning and ordering
ingredients. "Since the pandemic, orders have been getting delayed," Kendrick
says.
