Open RAN is an ongoing shift in mobile networks that enables telecom operators
to use non-proprietary RAN components from various vendors. Specific proprietary
components like the remote radio head (RRH) and baseband units (BBUs) are now
disaggregated into centralized units (CU), distributed units (DU), and radio
units (RU). With Open RAN, the new disaggregated functions can also be
virtualized or containerized. O-RAN takes this openness further by ensuring the
interfaces between the components are open and interoperable.
