Ten students at Cal State East Bay are gaining leadership skills and studying
equitable environmental sustainability this fall as part of the newly launched
Sustainability Leadership Program.

CSUEB has collaborated with California State University Trustee Emerita Rebecca
Eisen to launch the innovative, multidisciplinary paid internship and research
program.

The SLP is designed to provide Cal State East Bay students with a deep
understanding of the conditions that are harming Bay Area communities and ways
regional leaders are solving them.

With seed funding from Eisen and her spouse, James Eisen, the SLP launched this
fall with its inaugural cohort selected from a diverse, competitive pool of over
100 applicants. Selection includes a $5,000 scholarship for each student.

“My advice for current students is even if you fail, don’t give up. My
experience in college was not a straightforward one, I switched majors a few
times before landing on the one I felt truly fit me,” said Wolfe, who majored in

Congratulations to Cal State East Bay undergraduate student, Monica Chicas,
class of '24, for being awarded the prestigious 2023 CSU Trustees' Award for
Outstanding Achievement!

In 2006, after surviving a kidnapping and carjacking at gunpoint, Chicas made
the hard decision to flee El Salvador with her newborn son. Last spring, at the
age of 42, she joined the Pioneer community as a business administration major
with a concentration in accounting.

"I want to break the mentality that immigrants are here only to work one job,
two jobs," Chicas said. "Immigrants shouldn’t have to believe that it’s better
and safer to just work. But they can also go to college and make a better life."

Posted withregram • csueb Extended Reality (XR) is a term used to describe a
spectrum of immersive technologies that blend the physical and digital worlds.

Cal State East Bay’s computer science program is preparing students for the
emergence of XR by offering CS 697 Topics: Computer Science — Extended Reality

Millions of Americans go camping every year, but a wilderness trip with Derek
Jackson Kimball is far from typical. There are no s’mores, songs at the campfire
or geocaching. Instead, there is scientific equipment, high-power detectors and
a lot of note-taking as the Cal State East Bay physics professor and his
students look for a substance of paramount importance to astrophysics, cosmology
and particle physics: dark matter.

“It means a lot to create the opportunity for our students at Cal State East Bay
to be involved in research that is at the cutting edge of science,” said Jackson
Kimball. “The results of our search actually set the strongest experimental
limits on hidden photon dark matter in the particle mass range we searched. So
this is a meaningful experiment for the physics community, and our students
played an absolutely essential role in making it happen: from designing and
building the experiment to collecting the data in the wilderness to carrying out
statistical analysis.”

The findings are published in a paper titled “Hunt for magnetic signatures of
hidden-photon and axion dark matter in the wilderness” in Physical Review D. It
has also been chosen as an Editor’s Selection.

It’s the 8th annual #IStandWithImmigrants Day of Action! @IAmAnImmigrant
empowers immigrants and allies to share their stories and encourages everyone to
explore their heritage.

Cal State East Bay is featuring members of our community for this day of action.

Jerica Smith is a sociology major and says, “The campus community can help
immigrants by standing by them and giving resources. It is significant because
many immigrants come here in search of better possibilities, such as education.
They already have a lot of stress, anxiety, and trauma from those that make them
feel like they don't belong here, so just being there for them is a stress
reliever and less worry for them.”

She is grateful to East Bay for providing resources to help her gain a pathway
to a green card.

East Bay College Agile Network (EBCAN) Annual Convening 2023

The East Bay College Agile Network (EBCAN) is a partnership between our district
and California State University - East Bay. EBCAN works to increase college
completion and transfer rates, decrease the time to graduation, and narrow the
equity gap at CSUEB and CLPCCD colleges to contribute to economic mobility for
all students.

The annual convening centered student voices and allowed us to celebrate our
wins while recommitting to helping OUR students succeed. Our work would not be
possible without the support of Community Project Funding championed by
Congressman Eric Swalwell.

Becoming a professor was Arauza Rivera’s goal since she was an undergraduate,

Extended Reality (XR) is a term used to describe a spectrum of immersive
technologies that blend the physical and digital worlds.

Cal State East Bay’s computer science program is preparing students for the
emergence of XR by offering CS 697 Topics: Computer Science — Extended Reality
and Immersive Computing. In this class, students have the opportunity to create
XR applications using Microsoft HoloLens, AR headsets and Oculus/Meta Quest VR
headsets. This hands-on approach allows students to develop an understanding of
XR and give them the knowledge and skills in order to pursue their professional
career paths.

This dedication continues with the new Applied Sciences Center being built that
will hold XR research labs. “Thanks to the support from the Computer Science
department,” says Fay Zhong, a Cal State East Bay assistant professor of

#WEAREEASTBAY: Brittany Karki is a woman in STEM.

When Karki was growing up in the Oakland Public School system, she bought into
the notion that kids like her go to school, graduate and get a job. So, when she
got her diploma from Oakland High in 2009, she went to work as a warehouse
operator and then as a hairstylist. However, between the long shifts and demands
of everyday life, Karki was able to take science classes at community colleges.

“Everyone tells me this stuff is really hard and this is way out of my field,”
said Karki. “But I figured if I fail, I fail, but how will I know if I could
actually do it if I didn’t try?”

She is graduating this spring with a bachelor of science in physics and has been
accepted into seven Ph.D. programs at universities across the country. This
summer before heading to the University of Illinois for the Ph.D. program, Karki
will be camping with other Cal State East Bay physics students to study dark
matter in an experiment led by Professor Derek Jackson Kimball.

#WEAREEASTBAY: Tara Ferrao is resilient.

Ferrao, a longtime Bay Area resident, didn’t always know what she wanted to do
after graduating from high school.

“I was working at Whole Foods at the time and [transitioned to] taking classes
at Laney College in Oakland. My wife saw that I was struggling and encouraged me
to get a learning assessment and that’s where I found I had accessibility
needs,” said Ferrao.

Armed with this knowledge and at a more mature stage in her life at Laney, she
felt empowered. She wanted to pursue a professional career in healthcare but one
with consistent hours, and kinesiology proved to be a good move. Ferrao hopes to
use kinesiology to become a physical therapist to help people feel better and
become more independent. After graduation, she is going to start her Doctor of
Physical Therapy degree at MGH (Massachusetts General Hospital) Institute of
Health Professions in Boston, a private university focused on the health
sciences.

Fear: Restoring Indigenous Burning in California

Developed by students in the Museum Studies Anthropology course, the exhibit
explores the relationship Indigenous people have with fire in California.

“Cal State East Bay can learn from Indigenous burning and land relations to
develop new positive relationships with fire and the land that are not based in
fear or hubris, but respect, reciprocity and responsibility,” said Tony
