DESIGNING IN COLOR (DCO) IS A COLLECTIVE OF ARCHITECTS AND DESIGNERS OF CULTURE.
WE WORK TO REALIZE A JUST AND EQUITABLE FUTURE FOR MARGINALIZED COMMUNITIES, OUR
COLLABORATORS AND OUR BUSINESS -- WHERE SYSTEMS ARE CHALLENGED, DIVERSITY IS
CELEBRATED, VOICES ARE HEARD, AND OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND FOR ALL.

West Hollywood 40 – Strategic Plan
Designing in Color collaborated with the City of West Hollywood to structure
honest conversational workshops within the municipalities governing organizing
of nearly 200 staff with our DWA Workshop 1.

These conversations preceded an expanded role partnering with the City of West
Hollywood on their Strategic Plan, the City’s first comprehensive strategic plan
update in more than two decades.

Design Justice Workshops
To create new processes that center justice, we have to understand the traumas
that are built into our communtities. Through a series of speculative design
tasks and lectures, participants will understand how architecture and the
methods of the design practice have played a role in the creation of oppressive
space and the influence it has in future narratives. Looking at themes of
non-Eurocentric design rhetoric, education, and justice, DCo will challenge city
leaders, design professionals, students, and educators to learn how to create,
teach, and design safe space.
Community Organizing & Enrichment
Our community organizing approach collaborates with design teams,
municipalities, universities, and community-based nonprofits to amplify justice
in the creation of spaces and policies that focus on the joy, liberation, and
healing of marginalized people and places. By organizing with communities and
not extracting information for project use, we empower participants, known as
Griots, to advocate for their most ambitious dreams.
Socially Responsible Design
Our team draws on expertise from Community Organizing and Design Justice
Workshops to create empowering spaces for marginalized and silenced communities.
We prioritize dismantling the backdrop of oppression created by Eurocentric
modernist spaces. As designers and architects of culture, we believe
prioritizing a narrative-based design approach is essential for creating
equitable spaces that hold space for Black and Brown people.
“We are grateful to the Designing in Color team, who shared their time and
expertise with over a hundred of our staff, engaging them in thoughtful
conversation and exploration of the intersection of design and housing justice
in the built environment. As a supportive housing nonprofit, Designing in
Color's vision of inclusive and equitable communities is beautifully aligned
with our framework and philosophy around housing justice.”

I anxiously await each NOMA conference with the goal of scouting talent and
identifying the next generation with the promise to take our ongoing struggle
for equity and inclusion within the profession to the next level. I was thrilled
to attend the Designing in Color workshop at the 2018 conference in Chicago,
where Christopher, Opalia, and Rubin orchestrated a no-holds-barred conversation
about the relevance and importance of finding value in diversity.”

“The social revolutions that have been happening around America for the last 10
years are rooted in the racial tension people of color experience everyday. This
moment is demanding honest solutions like the ones that emerge through Designing
in Color. I have participated in two of their workshops and love their ability
to discuss the tensions of inequality and use the tension to generate solutions
for a better today.”
