HOMEAFLTEAMSCOLLINGWOOD-MAGPIES EXCLUSIVE: COLLINGWOOD PRESIDENT MARK KORDA STEPS DOWN AFTER ROCKY STINT SINCE REPLACING EDDIE MCGUIRE Korda to stand down as Pies president | 04:57 Tom Morris from Fox Sports@tommorris32 October 6th, 2021 10:42 pm Collingwood president Mark Korda has fallen on his sword. Foxfooty.com.au can reveal he has stepped down and the Magpies will announce it as soon as Thursday morning, with Korda telling those close to him he has arrived at the decision for the good of the club. It’s understood Korda informed fellow board members of his decision on Wednesday. The challenge from Jeff Browne, who now has the inside running to take over, has been persistent and over time has gained support from within the Magpies board. When the new president takes over, it will be the club’s third president in the calendar year after McGuire resigned in early February. Korda had initially planned to step down at the end of his 12-month term, but the decision has been hastened to avoid a public spat at the AGM on December 16. On October 15 the club will call for nominations and there will be an election to select the new board. Then the board will appoint the new president. It’s understood Korda was not pushed by fellow directors and this was his own personal decision to take the heat out of a potentially volatile situation. Browne, a close friend of McGuire’s and former TV executive, has been planning to challenge and spill the Magpies board for several months. Foxfooty.com.au revealed in September Korda had lost support from some directors, despite the club maintaining the board was unified at all times. “My role as president has been to see Collingwood settle, transition and reposition itself on and off the field in the wake of the departure in February of long-time president Eddie McGuire,” Korda said in a letter to members earlier this year. Mark Korda took over Eddie McGuire as Collingwood AFL president.Source: Supplied “With a relatively new board in place at the time, it was important to provide continuity between one age and the next.” Four board members were due to be up for election at the AGM: Peter Murphy, Bridie O’Donnell, Neil Wilson and Christine Holgate. However O’Donnell withdrew just four months after her controversial appointment. O’Donnell resigned citing “professional reasons” after a promotion in the state government’s response team to the pandemic. Her exit, subsequently, was expected to make Browne’s path to the board easier. She was also criticised for posting an Instagram story cheering on the Western Bulldogs late in the season. As revealed by foxfooty.com.au in May, O’Donnell did not meet the criteria to be a board member under the club’s constitution because she had not been a member for long enough. She was subsequently named a non-voting member following the revelation.
