Understated luxury and Michelin-starred cuisine at a tranquil Northern California inn. Plus: Miraculous mushrooms. Photography by Yoshihiro Makino BY SOPHIE MANCINI I met one of my dearest friends, Chaconne, in college. She grew up in Portland, Oregon, and now lives in LA, which I find funny, knowing her. She adores cold, rainy days and hot tea, curling up on the couch with a book as it pours. Recently, our head of production visited the Harbor House Inn. Reading her description of this historic hotel, perched above a cove in the misty untouched town of Elk, California, reminded me of Chaconne. In my mind’s eye, we’d meet there, catching up beside the roaring fireplace. Or perhaps we’d instead bundle up and head to Montana for a romp in the snow at Paws Up. A dog lover, she’d swoon over the property’s Alaskan huskies. This moment in history has really got me thinking about old friends, simpler times — this kind of human connectivity — more than ever. Our columnist Ivy Elrod discusses foraging as a fun-filled family activity, along with fungi’s rise to popularity, in a fascinating read on why mushrooms are having a moment. On the topic of connection and longing, I return to Italian journalist Mario Calvo-Platero’s deeply moving essay, “Paradise Lost and Found” — an epic, generation-spanning tale of his return to Tripoli 40 years after exile. Talk about a delicious read for a rainy day. TRAVEL THE HARBOR HOUSE INN IS THE PERFECT CALIFORNIA GETAWAY Built in 1916 by the Goodyear Redwood Company as a place to entertain and showcase its redwood empire, this 11-room boutique hotel transports visitors to a simpler time. I recently had the pleasure of speaking with 2020 Booker Prize recipient Douglas Stuart about his first novel, “Shuggie Bain.” His second novel, “Young Mungo,” is already receiving acclaim. Over the course of two very cool days, I hung out with starchitect Bjarke Ingels and his architecture firm, BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group). BIG’s Vine Light, designed for Artemide Lighting, just won a Wallpaper Design Award for Best Line Work. A PAID MOMENT WITH AMERICAN EXPRESS Transform your next stay.
