how we think about and manufacture our products and systems. The technology
involves depositing layer upon layer of material to create complex geometries,
allowing companies to make lighter, more complex parts that would be impossible
to produce by other means. With the drive towards net-zero and a sustainable
manufacturing future, businesses are under rising pressure to advance their
manufacturing processes and become more competitive, sustainable and
cost-effective. Additive Manufacturing has the potential to play a critical role
in addressing these challenges faced by Scotland's established and emerging
industrial sectors. This presentation will explore a range of AM technologies
and where they can be applied to some of Scotland's key industrial sectors.

The manufacturing industry is on the brink of colossal change which will allow
production companies and factories to compete at enhanced and sustainable levels
as not seen before. There is no doubt that 5G will revolutionize the world of
smart manufacturing. Due to its unparalleled combination of coverage, speed,
security and latency manufacturers will be able to accelerate the digital
transformation of their people, processes and operations to deliver enhanced
precision and reliability in equal measure. With 5G, manufacturers will be able
to connect more of their production lines and processes over a high-performance,
reliable and secure network freeing them from existing cabled network
constraints. And, manufacturing companies are not sitting still here. EY
research reveals that already 31% of manufacturing companies consider real-time
machinery control a critical 5G-IoT use case, while 30% stress 5G’s relevance to
factory robot and machine interactions. Crucially, the business upside of these
sophisticated use cases is clear, with modelling studies by Bell Labs Consulting
highlighting how 5G can achieve improved safety, productivity and efficiency of
operations. Yet taking full advantage of 5G-IoT in manufacturing will require
strategies that are agile and inclusive. Network options that are selected
depend upon the use cases required, the availability of spectrum and whether the
manufacturer has the technical expertise or desires to manage their own network.
Bell Labs Consulting, for example, estimates that 4G networks can support
80%-85% of existing manufacturing use cases. There’s a lot to learn. Here, being
part of the wider knowledge eco-system will be important and will act as a vital
catalyst, with collaborative trials and testbeds ensuring the first steps to
unlocking 5G’s long-term benefits are satisfied.

It will be shown that organisations “drift” away from the “norm” by accepting
unsafe deviations. This is a leadership challenge, and their role will be
discussed. It will set against a backdrop of a real-life case study - the
Challenger disaster. NASA is held up as the exemplar of procedural discipline,
organisational excellence etc. as they deliver operations in the extreme
environment of space. However, over several years they allowed people to
“drift”, they allowed the normalisation of deviation with catastrophic
consequences. The presentation will be wrapped up by getting attendees to think
about how this all applies in their own organisations.

How to use your data to spot maintenance issues developing How to find the right
platform to make your data easy to review & summarise How to apply stats to your
data & build correlations to predict performance. How to develop a 'single
version of the truth; Data is often stored in different databases with limited
accessibility. Different teams build spreadsheets that make different
assumptions/normalizations. Knowledge of exactly how the calculations work gets
lost as people move. How to see the unintended consequences of changes in large,
complex plants, what seems to make sense for one part of the plant may not
translate to another. Putting together a site-wide mass and energy balance can
help provide insights into unexpected interactions and a communication tool to
ensure everyone is comfortable with the change. Linking that to a live data
feedback system can make sure that the change works as intended and continues to
be used.

FRANCOIS DISCH

INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION CONSULTING LEADER - SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC

"THE FUTURE OF INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION"

Speaker Bio Synopsis

François is Industrial Automation Consulting Leader for UK & Ireland at
Schneider Electric. Following 10 years as Industrial Automation engineer –
covering roles in tendering, engineering & design, installation and
commissioning on large, global projects – Francois moved into consulting, first
with Deloitte, and now at Schneider Electric. His remit is to support
organisations in deploying advanced manufacturing technologies, from the
inception of digital aspirations to their realisation.

Fears of job losses resurfaced at the advent of the 4th industrial revolution,
in the same way as they did for the 3rd. Statistics however show that in
Scotland, the short-term decline of manufacturing employment is minimal as
compared to that of other sectors, and compensated by a solidly diversified
growth. Building a lights-out factory, or converting an existing plant into one,
often isn’t a financially viable objective – let alone acceptable for our
society. The future of automation in manufacturing leads to other destinations,
way more humane – and exciting. 10 years into the Digital Manufacturing era, we
can now see long-term trends emerging. What are they? Where are is industrial
automation heading to?

ALLAN VINCENT

SALES MANAGER UK - RM BOULANGER

"GATEWAY INTO THE EU: OPENING THE EU AND SELL LIKE BREXIT NEVER HAPPENED."

Speaker Bio Synopsis

Allan heads up the UK arm of RM Boulanger and with a background in corporate
consultancy and owning various businesses he brings a wealth of commercial
experience to the role. He advises companies in the UK and beyond about their
VAT liabilities when exporting to Europe and is very skilled in finding
solutions which streamline his clients’ processes, saves them money, and
ultimately makes them more competitive in this very challenging business
environment.

Regime 4200 has proved to be a popular solution for all kinds of companies

ALAN BIRSE

PRINCIPAL CONSULTANT - EXPENSE REDUCTION ANALYSTS

"BUY BETTER: THE PILLARS TO BUILD YOUR PROCUREMENT STRATEGY AT A TIME OF SUPPLY
DISRUPTION AND HIGH INFLATION."

Speaker Bio Synopsis

As a consultant with Expense Reduction Analysts, Alan is part of a global team
enabling organisations to save money and boost business performance through
effective procurement, improved supplier management and smarter spending habits.

ERA’s network of 700 cost-cutting experts knows how to save money in a host of
different cost categories. Alan has personally worked on projects where ERA has
turned a cost into a revenue stream, or instances where savings have been over
50% by introducing the correct supplier. Some clients are able to save £100Ks
per year.

Alan values both client and supplier relationships and works closely with the
supplier market to get the best results for ERA’s clients.

Procurement and Supply Chain Management have never been more important to a
business’ success than they are at present. With high inflation coming on the

continuity of supply at the same time as ensuring they are getting best value
from their suppliers. Add in the drive to Net Zero and Procurement departments
have never had more challenges. Procurement Teams identified the ‘Low Hanging
Fruit’ long ago and now need to work with the business to find creative
solutions to curb inflationary pressures. Alan will discuss ways in which

BRONAGH GILLESPIE

TECHNICAL PROJECT MANAGER - I4 PRODUCT DESIGN

"BENEFITS OF EARLY SUPPLY CHAIN ENGAGEMENT FROM A DESIGN PERSPECTIVE"

Speaker Bio Synopsis

Bronagh graduated from Strathclyde University with a Masters of Engineering with
Distinction. She started her career as a Mechanical Engineer. For the past 5
years she has led complex product developments from concept through to
production. She is now a Prince2 qualified Project Manager and recently joined
i4 Product Design.

It is often considered that transfer to manufacture comes at the end of the
product development process. However, there are huge benefits of early
engagement between designers, vendors and contract manufacturers to develop this
relationship as early as possible. Expert knowledge in product assembly, supply
chain, supplier relationships and manufacturing process expertise is often
utilised too late in the design process, restricting the chance of vital
influence on early design decisions, shaping the architecture of a product.
Early engagement can often lead to lucrative improvements. Bronagh will discuss
how she has seen the benefits of this early involvement to improve the success
of designs. Thinking ahead to selecting final vendors and obtaining prototypes
using final manufacturing processes before they are required in volume
manufacturing can reduce risk and avoid the chance of finding issues late in the
development process. The aim is for products designed for their manufacturing
processes resulting in easy and smooth transitions.

STAN JONIK

MANAGING DIRECTOR - SFJ SYSTEMS LTD

"DEMAND PLANNING WITH CLOSED LOOP FINITE SCHEDULING WITH OEE AND DATA ANALYTICS"

Speaker Bio Synopsis

My name is Stan Jonik Managing Director of SFJ Systems Ltd. I have a background
in manufacturing and started out as a Tool Maker in the aerospace industry in
the 70s. SFJ Systems incorporated in 1995, specialise in online software
engineering, finite scheduling and complex database systems. Our systems can
have a two-way link with major ERP systems if required. We own our software, and
specialise in writing complex algorithms and production control bespoke to
customer requirements.
My professional background includes working in the engineering and food industry
gaining Industrial engineering and simulation design qualification with Hawker
Siddeley, later with a degree in mathematics and computing. My professional
achievements are being part of a team of engineers who have developed online
scheduling and planning systems for the food industry and general manufacturing.
Being passionate in the success of all manufacturing sectors introducing the
latest technology to strengthen and build longevity in industry.

We are not an off the shelf ERP supplier! Having said that we do most of the ERP
functionality without financials. Typically, we link to ERP systems BOMs, SOP
and add value and detail where required. Demand planning is critical in the food
industry, using our forecasting module linked to the bill of material and master
data produces an accurate demand and hence an accurate finite schedule. Actual
times and downtime are recorded in SFDC producing management OEE and data
analytics reports. Our systems are totally flexible and are always configured to
the customers’ requirements. The accurate forecasting and MRP modules that link
to EDI orders leads to reducing stock and improved efficiency throughout the
factory. Our experience implementing Radio-frequency identification (RFID)
system in a salmon factory to improve work flow and display issues with product
hold ups in real time adds value to our business, hence this allows engineers to
solve issues as they might occur. Equipment maintenance and maintenance planning
is critical to a smooth-running factory. The SFJ maintenance system was designed
to be quick and easy to use and setup. We found that things that are easy to use
are then always used, this gives longevity to systems and happy personnel.

The last two years have undoubtedly been the most disruptive any of us have
experienced in our lifetime. The pandemic forced new business practices, trading
practices, social practices, and perhaps, even more importantly, compelled many
to reassess their priorities. But the pandemic was not alone in disrupting the
status quo. Heightened scrutiny around climate change initiatives, global supply
chain challenges, and the multi-layered complications brought on by Brexit, have
only added to the pressures of the pandemic. And to top all that off, with Gen Z
employees entering the workforce in numbers, for the first time since the
Industrial Revolution, businesses are now having to manage - and engage - five
generations of employees, all with a distinct set of values and priorities. As
overwhelming as all that sounds, with change there are always new opportunities
if one is open to new perspectives and shifts in thinking. A multi-generational
workforce, if managed correctly, can yield amazing results. Organisations that
learn how to marry the wisdom of the old and the digital prowess of the new,
will exponentially increase their chances at becoming market leaders and
employers of choice. There is much to be learned for all generations when we
learn to truly listen to each other. And that’s what we will be covering in this
presentation. The why, what, and how of collaborative, multi-generational
communication.

JONATHON SPEED

DIRECTOR OF PRODUCT AND APPLICATIONS - KEIT SPECTROMETERS

"STATIC OPTICS FTIR AS A TOOL FOR FOOD AND DRINK 4.0"

Speaker Bio Synopsis

Jonathon Speed is the Director of Product and Applications at Keit
Spectrometers. He has over a decade of experience in the field of spectroscopy,
ranging from surface science in the lab through to “dirty” industrial
installations and manufacturing processes.

Modern manufacturing techniques are increasingly using advanced analytical tools
such as spectroscopy. Near infrared (NIR) has been trialled extensively in the
fermentation space, but has limitations and has limited uptake in the real
world. Static optics FTIR is an approach that takes the mid infrared range out
of the laboratory and into manufacturing. We present the basics of static optics
FTIR, the advantages it has over both NIR and conventional FTIR, and the use
case for it in fermentation and other applications for food and beverage
manufacturing.

DR STEPHEN HARWOOD

LECTURER, DIRECTOR AND AUTHOR - TECHNOFORESIGHT / UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH

"WHO IS IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT AND WHERE IS EVERYONE ELSE?"

Speaker Bio Synopsis

Dr Harwood is an experienced practitioner in coal-oil, electronics and tourism
industries. Roles have included geophysicist, writer, educator, change agent,
entrepreneur and director. Currently attached to the University of Edinburgh, he
recently founded TechnoForeSight to promote developments in technology and work.
His extensive publications include technology futures and ERP implementation.

The digital revolution is upon us irrespective of what we want to call it. I
would like to offer a contentious view about what is happening and the
implications. I reflect upon the impact of COVID19 then use Huawei as my
yardstick to evaluate what is going on. This then leads me to consider two
worlds. The first is the contemporary world of the automated milking of a cow
herd. The second explores the industrial metaverse. My aim is to draw out some
issues that are growing in importance if you want to embrace digital technology
– can you afford not to, BUT to what length will you go?

TONY BROWN

COMMERCIAL DIRECTOR - MSP

"HOW TO BECOME A NET ZERO HERO"

Speaker Bio Synopsis

Tony is MSP’s co-founder and Commercial Director and has over 40 years’
experience in Advanced Manufacturing. He co-founded MSP in 2002 with a vision to
use probes fitted on CNC machine tools to deliver automated, accurate part setup
and inspection – making true precision engineering possible.

Tony is a named inventor on four patented products, all of which relate to CNC
machine tool calibration and measurement methods. He actively shares his
experience and knowledge of metrology and part processes with his peers to
influence the future of the manufacturing industry.

Manufacturers are currently faced with a Catch 22 scenario. How do they create a
sustainable process for Net Zero targets when the Primes and Tier 1’s are
demanding increased production rates? Many might think the answer lies in
installing solar panels or converting to wind power but, as Tony Brown will
explain, manufacturers are in danger of failing to meet their Net Zero goals if
they rely on these actions alone. For manufacturers using CNC machines, gains
can be made within machining processes but many firms don’t know exactly where.
Tony will encourage the audience to wake up and realise there is no room for
trial and error with this anymore. MSP's solution centres around using precision
engineering techniques and automation to streamline processes and create
right-first-time parts. This ensures less time and energy is spent producing
parts and, any energy that is used, only results in parts that will pass final
inspection. With this 'perfect part' mindset, the manufacturing industry will be
well ahead of the curve in the race to Net Zero.

JAMES FLEMING

MANAGING DIRECTOR & CEO - THE POWER WITHIN TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT

"LEADING WITH MOTIVATIONAL INTELLIGENCE: THE SECRET TO INNOVATION AND
ADAPTATION"

Speaker Bio Synopsis

James founded The Power Within Training in 2017, he previously enjoyed a
successful career in senior management and executive leadership positions in the
Middle East and Asia before returning to the UK in 2017 to share his knowledge,
experience and learnings in a way that would allow him to create a business
encompassing purpose and passion.

Leading people, teams, and your organisation through transition, adaptation or
change is a critical leadership capability. One fundamental truth applies to
every organisation's ability to adapt to changing market dynamics. Businesses
can only transform at the rate they can get their employees to embrace change.
Getting people to let go of long-held ways of doing things, moving them outside
of comfort zones and gaining employee buy-in to new ideas and approaches is the
single most significant impediment to organisational transformation.
Neuroscientists have discovered why people perceive risk, resist change and
cling to the way they approach their role. They have also found a practical
approach for removing this resistance and fostering greater employee
accountability, adaptability, and resilience. The answer was uncovered in the
emerging field of Motivational Intelligence (MQ). The People Problem: Solving
the People Problem will develop your organisational culture and motivational
intelligence (MQ), enabling you to become a driving force for innovative change,
team cohesion, high performance, and productivity. Having the right people with
the right mindset and skillset is fundamental to every organisational vision.
Without these people, our ability to embrace change, adopt innovation and take
calculated risks would not happen. We need a clearly defined strategy to move
our people from where they are now to where we need them to be, creating a
motivational mindset shift in embracing change. Motivational Intelligence (MQ)
MQ is the most recently discovered (2016) form of human intelligence and, in
many ways, the condition that plays the most significant role in individual
success. People who struggle with MQ tend to be more close-minded, change-averse
and rigidly stuck in their way. People with higher levels of MQ will exhibit
higher levels of ownership, adaptability, and willingness to take the
initiative. I will briefly examine the two critical aspects of why we struggle
with adopting innovation, transition, and change within businesses and
organisations and what can be done to counteract this normal human behaviour.
Risk Perception: Risk perceptions – or an individual's perceived susceptibility
to a threat – are a crucial component of many behavioural change theories,
particularly when adopting innovation and technology and even more so when it
comes to organisational transition and adapting new ways of working. Risk
perceptions are often targeted in behavioural change interventions, such as
understanding the organisational culture and leadership motivations to embrace
this change. Recent scientific studies strongly suggest (Prospect Theory,
Mindset & Human Motivation) that those interventions deriving from a
motivational change can successfully engage and change risk perceptions and
immediately positively impact the organisation. IT IS NOT THE STRONGEST OF A
SPECIES THAT SURVIVES, NOR IS IT THE MOST INTELLIGENT. IT IS THE ONE THAT IS
MOST ADAPTABLE TO CHANGE. Charles Darwin, 1809 - 1882 Organisational Culture:
Organisational Culture is a system of shared assumptions, values and beliefs
that govern how people behave in organisations. It is based on shared attitudes,
beliefs, customs, and written and unwritten rules that have been developed over
time and are considered valid. Building an organisational culture that
stimulates creativity and innovation has been one of the biggest challenges
since the industrial revolution. Creating the right organisational culture to
enable adaptation of innovation and behavioural change must come from within
(internal environment). One size does not fit all; businesses require open,
honest, and transparent two-way communication throughout the organisation,
individual ownership of the process, and strong leadership. These can only be
influenced by understanding personal concerns, beliefs, and mindsets around
perceived change, adoption, or risk. We are likely all to

"LEAN COMMUNICATION - HARNESSING NATURAL DRIVE AT WORK"

Speaker Bio Synopsis

With a Classics degree from Dartmouth College, Adrian has always been passionate
about the power of communication to mold thinking and outstanding professional
behaviours. He now taps into it working with leaders from NGOs, startups, and
multinational companies – to own their goals, and thrive at work on their own
terms.

Everyone is motivated differently. That’s why one approach doesn’t work
universally. That’s why communication often breaks down into conflict at work,
leading to staff and resources attrition. But if you elicit what naturally
drives people’s performance, you can utilize it to bring them on the same page,
and increase their productivity based on what already works for them.

CHRIS EVANS

MANAGER – VERTICAL INDUSTRY GROUP, AUTOMATION SYSTEMS DIVISION - MITSUBISHI

"THE ROAD TO DIGITALISATION AND SMART MANUFACTURING"

Speaker Bio Synopsis

Chris joined Mitsubishi Electric UK in 1995, initially as a Project Engineer
providing field based engineering support. Since 2000 Chris has been part of the
Senior Management Team and now heads up the Vertical Industry Group, responsible
for developing business in a variety of vertical sectors, including aggregates
and quarrying. Chris’ background is in control system design and previously
worked with machine tools, material handling, conveying systems and access
control. Chris is an advocate of intelligent manufacturing and the road to
digitalisation and Mitsubishi Electric has helped many companies start on this
journey by implementing a phased approach to achieving the intelligent
manufacturing goal.

A common myth is that only larger organisations can even think of digitalising
their production process. Chris Evans will discuss how the level of automation
and digitalisation deployed can be tailored and scaled to suit the size of the
operation and requirements of the plant and how deploying any level of
automation and digitalisation will have a positive effect on productivity. The
key is understanding what the production plant is trying to achieve and to
deliver this in a staged well thought out plan.

PHILIP WESSELY

"GLOBAL SC DIVERSIFICATION: CAN WE AFFORD GLOBAL SCS FALLING APART?"

Speaker Bio Synopsis

Philip is a Partner within Kearney, a leading global top management consulting
firm. I’m located at firm’s Zurich office and belong to the Swiss leadership
team. As core member of the Strategic Operations Practice is support clients
across industries in the areas of manufacturing strategy, value chain
optimization and transformation, as well as digitalization in the supply chain.
Philip holds a PhD in SCM from the University of St.Gallen (HSG) and Master of
Science degree in Industrial Engineering from the TU Darmstadt (Germany) and the
National University of Singapore.

After decades of globalization in supply chain we see increased questioning of
rigorous off-shoring and a more balanced view on supply chain design. The
pandemic and war in Ukraine have speeded up the transformation. But what is the
right balance between globalization and localization of supply chain? We believe
the answer is not that simple. It requires an industry specific view and bold
structural choices. According to Kearney analysis, more risk balanced supply
chains will create 300 bn$ of additional cost p.a. due to increased inventory
holding and moving value creation out of China
