The manufacturing industry is on the brink of colossal change which will allow production companies and factories to compete at enhanced and sustainable levels as not seen before. There is no doubt that 5G will revolutionize the world of smart manufacturing. Due to its unparalleled combination of coverage, speed, security and latency manufacturers will be able to accelerate the digital transformation of their people, processes and operations to deliver enhanced precision and reliability in equal measure. With 5G, manufacturers will be able to connect more of their production lines and processes over a high-performance, reliable and secure network freeing them from existing cabled network constraints. And, manufacturing companies are not sitting still here. EY research reveals that already 31% of manufacturing companies consider real-time machinery control a critical 5G-IoT use case, while 30% stress 5G’s relevance to factory robot and machine interactions. Crucially, the business upside of these sophisticated use cases is clear, with modelling studies by Bell Labs Consulting highlighting how 5G can achieve improved safety, productivity and efficiency of operations. Yet taking full advantage of 5G-IoT in manufacturing will require strategies that are agile and inclusive. Network options that are selected depend upon the use cases required, the availability of spectrum and whether the manufacturer has the technical expertise or desires to manage their own network. Bell Labs Consulting, for example, estimates that 4G networks can support 80%-85% of existing manufacturing use cases. There’s a lot to learn. Here, being part of the wider knowledge eco-system will be important and will act as a vital catalyst, with collaborative trials and testbeds ensuring the first steps to unlocking 5G’s long-term benefits are satisfied. She is now a Prince2 qualified Project Manager and recently joined i4 Product Design. It is often considered that transfer to manufacture comes at the end of the product development process. However, there are huge benefits of early engagement between designers, vendors and contract manufacturers to develop this relationship as early as possible. Expert knowledge in product assembly, supply chain, supplier relationships and manufacturing process expertise is often utilised too late in the design process, restricting the chance of vital influence on early design decisions, shaping the architecture of a product. Early engagement can often lead to lucrative improvements. Bronagh will discuss how she has seen the benefits of this early involvement to improve the success of designs. Thinking ahead to selecting final vendors and obtaining prototypes using final manufacturing processes before they are required in volume manufacturing can reduce risk and avoid the chance of finding issues late in the development process. The aim is for products designed for their manufacturing processes resulting in easy and smooth transitions. CHARLES HOGG COMMERCIAL DIRECTOR - UNSWORTH "GATEWAY INTO THE EU: OPENING THE EU AND SELL LIKE BREXIT NEVER HAPPENED." Speaker Bio Synopsis Charles’ team at Unsworth is at the forefront of digitising and scaling customs brokerage processes to meet post-Brexit requirements for EU and UK traders. Charles is currently National Vice Chairman and the Chair of BIFA’s (British International Freight Association) Maritime, Road, and Rail Policy Group and continues to set the pace for the evolution of Logistics Service Providers in 2022 and beyond. Since 2018, Charles has supported European and British traders of all sizes with events for Short Strait's users, untangling the new regulatory landscape, particularly for traders of complex products, products of animal origin, and foodstuffs. Regime 4200 has proved to be a popular solution for all kinds of companies desiring to import goods to the EU without necessarily applying for a VAT number in the country of import. Often, the country of import is not the country of the final destination. In this case regime 4200 allows the company to import and clear goods in one EU member state, provided that the goods are destined for another EU member state, other than the country of import. The last two years have undoubtedly been the most disruptive any of us have experienced in our lifetime. The pandemic forced new business practices, trading practices, social practices, and perhaps, even more importantly, compelled many to reassess their priorities. But the pandemic was not alone in disrupting the status quo. Heightened scrutiny around climate change initiatives, global supply chain challenges, and the multi-layered complications brought on by Brexit, have only added to the pressures of the pandemic. And to top all that off, with Gen Z employees entering the workforce in numbers, for the first time since the Industrial Revolution, businesses are now having to manage - and engage - five generations of employees, all with a distinct set of values and priorities. As overwhelming as all that sounds, with change there are always new opportunities if one is open to new perspectives and shifts in thinking. A multi-generational workforce, if managed correctly, can yield amazing results. Organisations that learn how to marry the wisdom of the old and the digital prowess of the new, will exponentially increase their chances at becoming market leaders and employers of choice. There is much to be learned for all generations when we learn to truly listen to each other. And that’s what we will be covering in this presentation. The why, what, and how of collaborative, multi-generational communication. I would like to offer a contentious view about what is happening and the implications. I reflect upon the impact of COVID19 then use Huawei as my yardstick to evaluate what is going on. This then leads me to consider two worlds. The first is the contemporary world of the automated milking of a cow herd. The second explores the industrial metaverse. My aim is to draw out some issues that are growing in importance if you want to embrace digital technology – can you afford not to, BUT to what length will you go? TONY BROWN COMMERCIAL DIRECTOR - MSP "HOW TO BECOME A NET ZERO HERO" Speaker Bio Synopsis Tony is MSP’s co-founder and Commercial Director and has over 40 years’ experience in Advanced Manufacturing. He co-founded MSP in 2002 with a vision to use probes fitted on CNC machine tools to deliver automated, accurate part setup and inspection – making true precision engineering possible. Tony is a named inventor on four patented products, all of which relate to CNC machine tool calibration and measurement methods. He actively shares his experience and knowledge of metrology and part processes with his peers to influence the future of the manufacturing industry. Manufacturers are currently faced with a Catch 22 scenario. How do they create a sustainable process for Net Zero targets when the Primes and Tier 1’s are demanding increased production rates? Many might think the answer lies in installing solar panels or converting to wind power but, as Tony Brown will explain, manufacturers are in danger of failing to meet their Net Zero goals if they rely on these actions alone. For manufacturers using CNC machines, gains can be made within machining processes but many firms don’t know exactly where. Tony will encourage the audience to wake up and realise there is no room for trial and error with this anymore. MSP's solution centres around using precision engineering techniques and automation to streamline processes and create right-first-time parts. This ensures less time and energy is spent producing parts and, any energy that is used, only results in parts that will pass final inspection. With this 'perfect part' mindset, the manufacturing industry will be well ahead of the curve in the race to Net Zero. ROY HENDERSON DIRECTOR - SP AUTOMATION & ROBOTICS "CAN I AUTOMATE? WHERE DO I START?" Speaker Bio Synopsis Roy Henderson is Co-Director of SP Automation & Robotics. Roy has been with the company for over 30 years, starting out as an apprentice, moving on to a number of different rolls within the company, including design and sales, before working his way up to company director. Logical steps for the introduction of automation. JOE PACITTI MANAGING DIRECTOR - CEED "PEER TO PEER BEST PRACTICE SHARING AS A ROUTE TO GROWTH" Speaker Bio Synopsis Joe Pacitti has BSc in Mechanical Engineering is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing. With over 35 years' experience in both private and public sectors covering technical and commercial roles in industry . public sector economic development agencies and higher education institutes. Explaining the significant benefit of companies and support organisations through the use of sharing best practice through a peer-to-peer model is critical to ensure sustainable economic growth. The ability to accelerate innovation or develop supply chain capability and importantly set some fundamental baseline for leadership is an important approach to support business growth and is complimentary to formal training and education approaches. JAMES FLEMING MANAGING DIRECTOR & CEO - THE POWER WITHIN TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT "LEADING WITH MOTIVATIONAL INTELLIGENCE: THE SECRET TO INNOVATION AND ADAPTATION" Speaker Bio Synopsis James founded The Power Within Training in 2017, he previously enjoyed a successful career in senior management and executive leadership positions in the Middle East and Asia before returning to the UK in 2017 to share his knowledge, experience and learnings in a way that would allow him to create a business encompassing purpose and passion. Leading people, teams, and your organisation through transition, adaptation or change is a critical leadership capability. One fundamental truth applies to every organisation's ability to adapt to changing market dynamics. Businesses can only transform at the rate they can get their employees to embrace change. Getting people to let go of long-held ways of doing things, moving them outside of comfort zones and gaining employee buy-in to new ideas and approaches is the single most significant impediment to organisational transformation. Neuroscientists have discovered why people perceive risk, resist change and cling to the way they approach their role. They have also found a practical approach for removing this resistance and fostering greater employee accountability, adaptability, and resilience. The answer was uncovered in the emerging field of Motivational Intelligence (MQ). The People Problem: Solving the People Problem will develop your organisational culture and motivational intelligence (MQ), enabling you to become a driving force for innovative change, team cohesion, high performance, and productivity. Having the right people with the right mindset and skillset is fundamental to every organisational vision. Without these people, our ability to embrace change, adopt innovation and take calculated risks would not happen. We need a clearly defined strategy to move our people from where they are now to where we need them to be, creating a motivational mindset shift in embracing change. Motivational Intelligence (MQ) MQ is the most recently discovered (2016) form of human intelligence and, in many ways, the condition that plays the most significant role in individual success. People who struggle with MQ tend to be more close-minded, change-averse and rigidly stuck in their way. People with higher levels of MQ will exhibit higher levels of ownership, adaptability, and willingness to take the initiative. I will briefly examine the two critical aspects of why we struggle with adopting innovation, transition, and change within businesses and organisations and what can be done to counteract this normal human behaviour. Risk Perception: Risk perceptions – or an individual's perceived susceptibility to a threat – are a crucial component of many behavioural change theories, particularly when adopting innovation and technology and even more so when it comes to organisational transition and adapting new ways of working. Risk perceptions are often targeted in behavioural change interventions, such as understanding the organisational culture and leadership motivations to embrace this change. Recent scientific studies strongly suggest (Prospect Theory, Mindset & Human Motivation) that those interventions deriving from a motivational change can successfully engage and change risk perceptions and immediately positively impact the organisation. IT IS NOT THE STRONGEST OF A SPECIES THAT SURVIVES, NOR IS IT THE MOST INTELLIGENT. IT IS THE ONE THAT IS MOST ADAPTABLE TO CHANGE. Charles Darwin, 1809 - 1882 Organisational Culture: Organisational Culture is a system of shared assumptions, values and beliefs that govern how people behave in organisations. It is based on shared attitudes, beliefs, customs, and written and unwritten rules that have been developed over time and are considered valid. Building an organisational culture that stimulates creativity and innovation has been one of the biggest challenges since the industrial revolution. Creating the right organisational culture to enable adaptation of innovation and behavioural change must come from within (internal environment). One size does not fit all; businesses require open, honest, and transparent two-way communication throughout the organisation, individual ownership of the process, and strong leadership. These can only be influenced by understanding personal concerns, beliefs, and mindsets around perceived change, adoption, or risk. We are likely all to ADRIAN MUNTEANU FOUNDER, TRAINER, MINDHACKER - MINDGRASP "LEAN COMMUNICATION - HARNESSING NATURAL DRIVE AT WORK" Speaker Bio Synopsis With a Classics degree from Dartmouth College, Adrian has always been passionate about the power of communication to mold thinking and outstanding professional behaviours. He now taps into it working with leaders from NGOs, startups, and multinational companies – to own their goals, and thrive at work on their own terms. Everyone is motivated differently. That’s why one approach doesn’t work universally. That’s why communication often breaks down into conflict at work, leading to staff and resources attrition. But if you elicit what naturally drives people’s performance, you can utilize it to bring them on the same page, and increase their productivity based on what already works for them. CHRIS EVANS MANAGER – VERTICAL INDUSTRY GROUP, AUTOMATION SYSTEMS DIVISION - MITSUBISHI "THE ROAD TO DIGITALISATION AND SMART MANUFACTURING" Speaker Bio Synopsis Chris joined Mitsubishi Electric UK in 1995, initially as a Project Engineer providing field based engineering support. Chris is an advocate of intelligent manufacturing and the road to digitalisation and Mitsubishi Electric has helped many companies start on this journey by implementing a phased approach to achieving the intelligent manufacturing goal. A common myth is that only larger organisations can even think of digitalising their production process. Chris Evans will discuss how the level of automation and digitalisation deployed can be tailored and scaled to suit the size of the operation and requirements of the plant and how deploying any level of automation and digitalisation will have a positive effect on productivity. The key is understanding what the production plant is trying to achieve and to deliver this in a staged well thought out plan. After decades of globalization in supply chain we see increased questioning of rigorous off-shoring and a more balanced view on supply chain design. The pandemic and war in Ukraine have speeded up the transformation. But what is the right balance between globalization and localization of supply chain? We believe the answer is not that simple. It requires an industry specific view and bold structural choices. According to Kearney analysis, more risk balanced supply chains will create 300 bn$ of additional cost p.a. due to increased inventory holding and moving value creation out of China GILLIAN CAMERON PROGRAMME MANAGER - SUPPLIER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME (SDP) "COMMUNITY WEALTH BUILDING AND SUPPLY CHAIN OPPORTUNITIES: HOW CAN YOUR BUSINESS BENEFIT?"
