1. MAKE SURE YOU ARE SAFE: First and foremost, ensure you are safe from any
remaining threat; verify the assailant no longer poses a risk. Verify the
assailant no longer has access to a weapon, and scan for / avoid any
accomplices. Do not approach the assailant or move / touch evidence. Remove
yourself from the environment if needed.

2. BE THE FIRST TO CALL 911: Even if you did not pull the trigger, be the first
to call 911. If the incident was serious enough for you to deploy your firearm,
make a report as soon as possible, while the details are still clear in your
mind. Remember – police officers commonly identify the first person who calls as
“victim 1” and the second person who calls as “suspect 1.”

3. INITIATE EMERGENCY RESPONSE: From a safe position or location, call 9-1-1. If
YOU used a weapon, it is best if YOU do not make this call yourself.Remember you
are on a RECORDED CALL and there is no 5th Amendment protection for this call.
If possible (and it will be), have a third party make this call. Request
emergency medical services if they are needed for you, the assailant or others.
Describe what you are wearing, and let the dispatcher know you will not have
your weapon in your hand when the officers arrive. Tell the 9-1-1 operator
something similar to, “I had to use a weapon in self-defense,” “I was forced to
defend myself,” “I was in fear for my life,” or “I was attacked.” Do not give a
detailed account of the incident. This is not the time. Follow the instructions
from your Safehouse Defense Training and Call The 24- Hour Emergency Line.

4. PREPARE FOR RESPONDING OFFICERS: When you see police cars or officers getting
close, or hear their sirens, holster/secure your weapon. Officers responding to
a shooting incident will have a heightened level of concern for their own
safety, so be prepared to follow their directions. Raise your empty hands above
your head with the palms facing forward and precisely follow their commands. DO
NOT REACH FOR YOUR FIREARM! They will disarm you and will likely handcuff you on
the ground. Expect to be treated as a criminal for now. Again, this is not the
time to discuss with police officers your Safehouse Defense membership nor
mention you have a legal service plan for self-defense. Keep words to a minimum
and focus on respectfully and instantly following the directions of the
officers.

5. LIMIT YOUR INITIAL RESPONSE: Remember that your defense begins with you. What
you say and do at this point can make or break your case if you later find
yourself considered as a criminal suspect. Although you should provide initial
information to the responding officers, it is still not the time to give a
detailed statement. You might say something like, “I was forced to defend my
life,” or “That is the suspect. He attacked me.” If you are asked to give a
detailed statement, voice your intent to cooperate, but add, “I intend to give a
full statement, but only in the presence of my attorney.”

6. IDENTIFY CASE ELEMENTS TO OFFICERS: Be aware that what you DON’T say might
hurt your case if you are charged. Officers need a few case elements – basic
facts pertinent to the incident – to present to the investigators. Examples of
basic case element statements are, “That is the suspect and the weapon he
pointed at me is there,” or “That person is a witness.” Again, this is not the
time to provide a detailed statement.

7. INFORM OFFICERS OF INJURIES: Inform police officers of any injuries you or
your loved ones may have sustained, and make sure that these are documented
before you are cleaned up. If you are injured in any way, request to be taken to
the hospital for evaluation. This was a traumatic experience andnow is not the
time to be macho; further, your injuries can be presented to support your
decision to use deadly force. Remember also that just because you are not
bleeding doesnot mean you havenot sustained injury. Have yourself examined and
checked for internal/

soft-tissue injuries you may not even realize you have. Traumatic incidents
usually result in an adrenaline surge that overshadows the sensation of pain.
This is actually a physiologically based human survival mechanism which serves
the purpose of supporting the “fight or flight” response in the face of a
life-threatening situation. When in doubt, get checked out.

8. CONTROL THE INFORMATION ABOUT THE INCIDENT: Although you may feel the need to
talk about the traumatic incident, DON’T. Do not write or post about it on
social media. Furthermore, don’t share information about it to family or friends
through any electronic device. While at the scene, do not exchange stories with
witnesses and do not make off-color comments or laugh at the jokes of others.
There may be reporters with cameras / microphones present, so do not make any
statements and assume that you are being recorded. If you are offered your cell
phone while in custody, assume you are being watched and recorded.

9. PROVIDE IDENTIFYING INFORMATION ONLY: Explain to law enforcement personnel
that you will give a full statement and interview, but only in the presence of
your attorney. Provide the responding officers your basic identifying
information only. Request your legal representative. Reach your emergency
contact(s) and request that they notify your attorney immediately of the
emergency.

10. If you carry a concealed weapon or have one for home defense, it is
extremely important to plan ahead for this possibility. Consider joining our
membership program. Attend member seminars and training events on a regular
basis. Discuss your plan with your family and emergency contact(s). If a
situation arises that presents a threat, assess it carefully and ask yourself,
“If I didn’t have a weapon on me at this time, what would I do?” This question
could keep you from being launched into a traumatic incident that might change
your life irrevocably. If the situation can be avoided/managed without a weapon,
DO SO!

INSTRUCTIONS FOR CALLING 9-1-1

1) Take a deep breath; count to three; exhale dial 9-1-1.
2) “My name is_________; I am at___________. I was in fear for human life and
was forced to use lethal force; please send police and paramedics.

WHAT TO SAY (AND ONLY WHAT TO SAY) WHEN POLICE ARRIVE
1) “I was forced to use lethal force to defend innocent life. I will cooperate
as a victim or witness in the perpetrator’s prosecution.”
2) “As you likely know yourself or from colleagues, this is a stressful
situation and traumatic experience for me. As such, I do not wish to make any
further statement until I consult my attorney and compose myself. I do not
consent to any search of my person, home or vehicle.”
3) “I will cooperate fully once I speak to my attorney and calm down.”
4) Please show me the same courtesy you would a fellow officer who was involved
in a similar situation. Thank you for your understanding.”
5) Call your Attorney.

What is Multi-State Reciprocity?

One of the main benefits of an Arizona CCW Permit is the ability to expand the
places where a person can legally carry a self-defense firearm. Arizona
Residents with an AZ CCW Permit can legally carry concealed in 37 states outside
of Arizona. Non-Residents with an AZ CCW Permit can legally carry in 30 states
including Arizona. It is very important to note that some states, South Carolina
for example only honor a AZ CCW Resident Permit. So as a Non-Resident AZ CCW
Permit holder you can legally transport your firearm, by vehicle or airplane,
and possess it while in South Carolina, take it to the range and shoot it, but
you cannot carry it concealed on your body, purse or glove compartment.

Also, every state has slightly different laws related to Self-Defense. For
example, Arizona is a “Stand Your Ground” state meaning you have No Duty To
Retreat from a self-defense situation. Some states do not have the same law. It
is very important to understand the local laws for each state or area where you
plan to carry your firearm. Our course discusses Arizona’s specific self-defense
and firearms laws as well as general Federal Laws for legally carrying and
transporting firearms in the United States.

States such as California, for example, do not recognize an Arizona Concealed
Carry Permit. So if you are a California resident with an AZ CCW Permit, you
cannot legally carry a concealed firearm in California. You can carry your
firearm concealed in Arizona and 29 other states. If you have a California CCW
and an Arizona CCW you can legally carry in both states and other states that
have Reciprocity Agreements with Arizona. Keep in mind that a handful of states
like California have different laws regarding the rules of engagement for
self-defense situations and certain types of firearms, magazine capacity and
accessories are not allowed, so it’s important to know the laws of both states
and other states where you plan to be armed. Our AZ CCW Online courses will
discuss theses topics and other important laws and resources for you to aware
of.
