HOW INNOVATIVE PARTNERSHIPS HELP STRUGGLING HOSPITALS ADAPT AND EVOLVE

The healthcare landscape in the U.S. is under threat. With serious financial
challenges, a large proportion of hospitals continue to operate at a loss. A
report by the American Hospital Association reveals that 53% of hospitals in the
U.S. are projected to experience negative margins in 2023, while a more dismal
forecast suggests that this number could rise to 68%.

STUDY: IN-HOME OUTPATIENT PT REDUCES COSTS BY 52% COMPARED TO TRADITIONAL HOME
HEALTH SERVICES

A new study from the on-demand physical therapy company Luna found that in-home
outpatient PT models can reduce costs by 52% compared to traditional home health
services for total knee and hip replacements. The study — done in conjunction
with the nonprofit hospital system Hoag Hospital — was conducted between 2021
and 2023. During that time, Hoag and Luna found that participating surgeons
using Luna’s services reduced their home health utilization by 86%, resulting in
decreased costs of $2,517 per case.

In a groundbreaking study, Hoag Hospital, a leading not-for-profit regional
health care delivery network in Orange County, California, presented the results
of a two-year analysis at the 2023 American Association of Orthopedic Executives
(AAOE) conference. The study demonstrated that the Luna in-home outpatient
physical therapy care model reduces costs by 52% compared with traditional home
health for total knee and hip replacements.
