LEGACY OF VAL DAY OF SERVICE: FULLER CENTER FOR HOUSING

Student Activities

Join the Christensen Office of Social Action and Sustainability as we lend a
hand at the Fuller Center for Housing's thrift store. This organization's thrift
store specializes in building materials-- think like a mash up of Home Depot and
Goodwill. We will be sorting donations and tidying the store, making the
products look great so that customers can find what they're looking for.
Proceeds from the thrift store go to fund critical home repairs for Cache Valley
community members with low incomes. The thrift store also diverts usable
materials from the landfill! We plan to be indoors, but there's a chance that
some tasks will take place outside, so dress for the weather. Close-toed shoes
are a good option, since donations can be sharp or heavy. Optional car pool will
leave from the black lot (just east of the Legacy Fields, look for someone
holding a USU flag).

CHEMISTRY SEMINAR SERIES: MICHAEL TRAKSELIS

Conference/Seminar

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry presents "Dynamic Regulation of
Replisome Progression" with Michael Trakselis, professor at Baylor University.
Hosted by Sean Johnson. Projects in the Trakselis laboratory center on
understanding the molecular mechanisms of DNA replication and repair and
exploiting this knowledge for cancer therapeutics, biotechnology, and nanoscale
applications. The lab utilizes a model archaeal DNA replication system which
shares significant homology to that of higher eukaryotes but is amenable to in
vitro biochemistry experiments. This allows them to draw parallels between
different domains of life using simpler replication systems. Additionally, they
utilize cellular biology approaches in human cells to investigate the roles of
various enzymes in double strand break repair. In this vain, they utilize
molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, cell biology and biophysical methods
to probe this area of research.

LAEP SPEAKER SERIES: DAN JOST

Lecture/Readings

The Tenuous Renaissance in Playscape Design In recent years, the U.S. has
undergone a renaissance in playscape design. Those designing and commissioning
playgrounds are increasingly moving away from static pole and platform
structures that provide little play value and even less challenge. While safety
is still one of the major drivers of playground design, there is an increasing
understanding that not all risks can or should be limited--and some are
beneficial. The adventure playground--where children build their own
environments with hammers and saws--has made a bit of a comeback, and loose
parts are being embraced on a wider scale. Innovative climbing features let
children climb higher, farther, and in more social ways--while limiting falls
from high places. And designers are increasingly bringing nature into
playscapes--which has positive impacts on children's health and well-being.  In
this presentation, Daniel Jost will discuss the playscape renaissance taking
place, some of the playscapes he documented as a writer at Landscape
Architecture Magazine, and his own efforts to support thoughtful playscapes and
outdoor learning environments.

ENTREPRENEUR LEADERSHIP SERIES: LOLA STRONG

Panel Discussion/Presentation

As a young woman, Lola dreamed of making a difference in the world. Her progress
was completely derailed in 1998 when she was prescribed pain killers, which
quickly developed into an all-consuming addiction to heroin. Lola’s downward
spiral led to a place where all drug - addicts go - to a series of rehabs,
jails, then prisons. In 2008, she was on her way to her fourth prison term, but
an empathetic judge gave her the choice to complete two years at Delancey Street
rather than serve her five year sentence. The opportunity was life changing.
Today, Lola is a cofounder of The Other Side Academy (TOSA), and the managing
director of the Denver facility. Most important to Lola is the fulfillment she
gains from using her formidable skills and selfless determination to help others
change their lives.

COMMUNITAS LECTURE SERIES: LEN DAVIS

Arts/Entertainment

Artist Statement: I work in assemblage, collage, drawing and works on paper
which revolves around themes of everyday life issues we encounter with the human
figure present. My concepts vary from emotional expressions, responses or
outcome ( anger, chance, fear, happiness, hate, hurt, jealousy, love, regret,
risk, vulnerability etc...), identity, perception, coping within the human
condition etc... I have eclectic taste. My style is a combination of several
elements with heavy emphasis on illustration, mixed media and vibrant colors
with the human figure in an action-type, comic book, expressive pose and/or
movie poster-like look & feel. It’s like a pizza with everything on it. Once you
take that first bite, you’re inundated with flavor. And that’s what I strive for
in my work. Because life hits you all at once. I occasionally insert my past
experiences in my art. I believe that some of my experiences, in some cases,
parallels to others for a sense of relatability. My premise is to lure the
viewer in. Once they’re in, they will be placed in a position to reflect on and
question their ethics, be it disquieting or placid.

LAEP SPEAKER SERIES: SEAN BURKHOLDER

Lecture/Readings

Managing Muddy Methods As climate-induced shifts make our coastal environments
increasingly volatile and unpredictable, establishing new ways of working that
move beyond the tried-and-true assumptions that past observations provide
accurate examples for future conditions has become necessary. This becomes even
more prescient when considering the objectives of designing or engineering with
nature as opposed to simply protecting ourselves against it. Experimentation and
contextual knowledge are finding new applications where once we relied on
established and universal standards of best practice. With a focus on liminal
coastal environments of both fresh and salt water, this talk will span a range
of recent design work, organized around the subject of landscape research
methods and this role of experimentation.

LUNCH & LEARN - FOOD IS MEDICINIE

Workshop/Training

USU Be Well and Registered Dietitian, Brooke Lister, present a lunch and learn
on Food As Medicine. Food As Medicine is a growing movement that promotes using
food and nutrition interventions as part of healthcare. Diet quality is one of
the leading risk factors for death from chronic diseases in the United States
which is partially fueling the Food As Medicine movement. Diet alone cannot and
should not replace medicine in all circumstances but it can be helpful in
promoting health and protecting our body from disease. In this presentation, we
will be going through each food group and discussing ways that we can include
these beneficial foods from each category in our diets to help create better
lifestyle habits. *Presentation is available in person and virtually and will be
recorded. Attendance and participation in this event will qualify as an activity

ADVANCING WOMEN THROUGH “DEVELOPMENTAL RELATIONSHIPS”: A DIALOGUE WITH GLOBAL
EXPERTS

Panel Discussion/Presentation

The Utah Women & Leadership Project invites you to join us for this Spring
Women’s Leadership Forum.

Over the past 40 years, research has shown that “developmental relationships”
facilitate career success, particularly for leaders. In addition, multiple
developers (e.g., mentors, sponsors, or peers) enhance individuals’ learning,
growth, and advancement. Globally recognized experts, Drs. Murphy and Kram have
studied leadership, identity, and positive relationships at work to provide a
foundation for understanding how to advance women through developmental
relationships. In an interactive discussion with Dr. Susan R. Madsen, they will
talk about five specific types of developmental relationships that are critical
for developing women leaders: mentors, sponsors, peers, executive coaches, and
learning partners. These relationships provide a range of supportive functions
that both challenge and enable women to learn and thrive as they advance. The
discussion will also cover strategies for individual women crafting these
developmental relationships and ways that organizations can create and sustain a
climate that fosters these connections.

COMMUNITAS LECTURE SERIES: DAN HICKS

Arts/Entertainment

Self-taught, Daniel spent two decades navigating the margins as a freelance
graphic designer, operating primarily within the underground music and art
scene, which he has interacted with and participated in since the late1980s.
Having transitioned away from client-based projects as of 2017, Daniel now

FACILITATING STUDENTS ENGAGEMENT WITH CHALLENGING MATERIAL: THE POWER OF
LITERARY LEARNING CIRCLES

Workshop/Training | Sparkshops

Many of us teach required courses that are not at the top of most students' list
of classes they are most excited to take. Small group learning circles have been
a powerful tool we have used over the past three years to improve student
engagement with course material in what we have come to call in Social Work,
high resistance topic areas/courses. The response from students has been
overwhelmingly positive and the experience of faculty has been equally positive.
Come learn about how you might adapt this assignment/tool to enhance your
students learning and your own teaching experience.

UTAH STATE THEATRE: MISALLIANCE

Arts/Entertainment

The play takes place entirely on a single Saturday afternoon in the conservatory
of a large country house in Hindhead, Surrey in Edwardian era England.

It is a continuation on some of Shaw's ideas on marriage, Socialism, physical
fitness, and women intent on escaping Victorian standards of helplessness,
passivity, stuffy propriety, and non-involvement in politics or general affairs.

Misalliance is an ironic examination of the mating instincts of a varied group
of people gathered at a wealthy man's country home on a summer weekend. Most of
the romantic interest centers on the host's daughter, Hypatia Tarleton, a
typical Shaw heroine who exemplifies his lifelong theory that in courtship,
women are the relentless pursuers and men the apprehensively pursued.

DENIM DAY CELEBRATION

Special Event

In 1992, a sexual assault conviction was overturned in Rome, Italy by the
Italian High Court because the victim had been wearing tight jeans. The court
argued that because her jeans were tight she would have had to assist him in
removing them, therefore giving him consent. Enraged by the verdict, the women
in the Italian Parliament protested by wearing jeans on the steps of the Supreme
Court. Over the years wearing jeans on this anniversary has become an
international symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes
about sexual violence. Join in solidarity by wearing jeans on Wednesday, April
26th. Stop by our Denim Day barbecue for photo booth opportunities and to build
community.

LATINX GRADUATION CELEBRATION

Cultural

This celebration is meant to help bridge the gap by allowing students to
celebrate their accomplishments. At the celebration, students come dressed in
their graduation regalia and are called up one at a time in alphabetical order.
They will be given a stole to be placed around their neck, and the center's
Coordinator of Programs and Director will shake their hands. Students are then
allowed a few minutes to address the audience and their families. After the
event, the students are allowed to keep the stole, as a gift from the Latinx
Cultural Center. The stole is meant to be worn at the university graduation
ceremony and serve as a treasured reminder of our students' university
