PEOPLE ARE RAVING ABOUT HOW MUCH EASIER IT IS TO READ WITH 'BIONIC READING' FONT

THIS READING TOOL COULD BE A GAME-CHANGER FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE A HARD TIME
FOCUSING WHILE READING.

Annie Reneau

The 'bionic reading' font is designed to help keep you focused and read faster.

Reading is a fundamental tool of learning for most people, which is why it's one
of the first things kids learn in school and why nations set literacy goals.

But even those of us who are able to read fluently might sometimes struggle with
the act of reading itself. Perhaps we don't read as quickly as we wish we could
or maybe our minds wander as our eyes move across the words. Sometimes we get to
the end of a paragraph and realize we didn't retain anything we just read.

People with focus or attention issues can struggle with reading, despite having
no actual reading disabilities. It can be extremely frustrating to want to read
something and have no issues with understanding the material, yet be unable to
keep your mind engaged with the text long enough to get "into" what you're
reading.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But what if there were a font that could help you stay focused? That could help
you not only read faster but better retain what you've just read?

That's what the creators of Bionic Reading claim is possible with their font
tool.

"Bionic Reading revises texts so that the most concise parts of words are
highlighted," the Swiss company's website reads. "This guides the eye over the
text and the brain remembers previously learned words more quickly."

Give it a try:

@WhattheADHD/Twitter

The gist is that our eyes don't need to focus on the entire word because our
brains can fill in the rest for us. By bolding the first part of the word, we're
more quickly able to move from word to word.

"Bionic Reading aims to play a supporting role in the absorption of volume
text," states the website. "We see technological progress as an opportunity for
all those who want to increase the pleasure of reading in a noisy and hectic
world in a focused way and without distraction."

While there are no studies cited on this method of reading, there are plenty of
anecdotes about it being helpful. The example shared by @WhattheADHD on Twitter
got people's attention and many people responded with enthusiasm at how much
easier the bionic reading text was for them to read.

"This is amazing! I have ADHD and I didn’t even realize that I was having
trouble fixating when I read," wrote one person. "My eye latches right on to the
bold face. Can’t wait to try reading a book again. It’s been all audiobooks for
a while."

"It's incredible how reading this feels like finally unlocking 100% of your
brain," wrote another.

However, not everyone was impressed or thrilled with the sample. Some people
said that they had a harder time reading the bionic text or that it distracted
or slowed them down. Both positive and negative responses came from a diverse
pool of people. Some who described themselves as neurodivergent said that they
loved it and some said it was harder. The same went for people who said they
were neurotypical, so it's hard to say who this tool may specifically help the
most. Everyone's brains work differently, and different people will find
different things helpful.

Bionic reading might be a game-changer for some, but it's not the only tool of
its kind. There are speed-reading programs that train you to stop reading each
word and allow your brain to read visually instead of auditorily. There are also
various methods of making reading easier by adjusting how your eyes move across
the text.

For instance, check out this "space reading" technique:

   * Share using tw

@uxjavi/Twitter

Bionic Reading has a free text converter on its website that you can use to try
out its font changes. A YouTube clip from the company also shows possibilities
for how the font can be adjusted to individual preferences, making more or less
of the initial letters bolded.

And again, if this doesn't work for you, then it's probably not made for you.
For people who struggle with reading, something like Bionic Reading could make a
huge difference.

Three cheers for technology being used to help people overcome difficulties and
make learning easier and more efficient.

EXPERTS OF SCIENCE AND RELIGION COME TOGETHER TO TALK PSYCHEDELICS IN A FREE
ONLINE SERIES

Heather Wake

In depth conversations held by experts and scholars. All at no cost.

True

We are living in a renaissance of psychedelic research, no doubt about
it…particularly when it comes to medical treatment. Psilocybin and MDMA are
being used to alleviate depression and post traumatic stress disorder. Ayahuasca
retreats continue to become more popular as healing centers. Even my go-to yoga
spot now offers a “Microdose Flow Night.” What a time to be alive.

And yet, as plant medicine makes its way back into the mainstream of our modern
world, traditional spiritual wisdom often seems to get lost, even dismissed,
from the conversation. But what if there were a way to blend new and old ways of
thinking?

Graduate Theological Union (GTU) is a world leader in the study of religion and
theology. Their new virtual learning program, GTUx, is a is a vibrant home for
the exploration of spirituality and activism through online learning
opportunities, all inspired by experts of spiritual, ethical, cultural and
social fields.

GTUx recently launched “Psychedelics and Religion”—a first-of-its-kind online
program that explores the inherent (but often overlooked) relationship between
spirituality and science in hallucinogens. Plus, it’s completely free to sign
up.

Psychedelics and Religion Part I | gtu.edu/xwww.youtube.com

GTUx’s “Psychedelics and Religion, Part 1” has nine easy-to-watch modules
offering in-depth conversations from leading scholars in both religious and
medical fields, including Michael Pollan, Celina De Leon, Ayize Jama-Everett,
and many others.

The content is practical for a general audience, and particularly for those
interested in using plant medicine in holistic ways.

Brian Anderson, Assistant Clinical Professor at UCSF General Hospital, and one
of the GTUx speakers considers it paramount to incorporate spiritual knowledge
from ancient practices into the medical use of psychedelics. This is important
even if the person taking these substances doesn’t label themselves as
religious.

“Survey data suggests that people who identified as atheist or agnostic after
having a high dose psychedelic experience might change…having some form of new
spiritual beliefs or convictions that they did not have before. This is
something I've certainly seen in a number of people,” he shared with Upworthy.

Clinical settings generally lack frameworks to better understand these profound
experiences in what many might call the “mystical” realm. It’s sort of like
being dropped into a brand new country without a map or translator.

Religious scholars, however, are fluent in mystical language. Dr. Sam Shonkoff,
Taube Family Assistant Professor of Jewish Studies at the GTU, and panel leader,
hopes that their contribution might reinstill a sense of “awe” into our modern
view of psychedelics, in the fullest sense of the term.

“There's a really desperate need to slow down and think carefully and critically
about what it means to tap into these very powerful substances that are
associated with very rich cultural traditions and to not take that lightly,” he
explained.

Dr. Sam Shonkoff, Taube Family Assistant Professor of Jewish Studies at the GTU

“I think that people who study the histories and phenomenologies of religion and
spirituality are importantly situated to help us think more carefully and
critically about where we are and where we're going in relation to
psychedelics.”

Participants of “Psychedelics and Religion” will learn about psychedelics in
relation to mysticism, mental health, and chaplaincy, and how to better
integrate their profound transformational experiences into everyday life. By the
end of the program, they might discover that when it comes to plant medicine,
science and spirituality actually do complement one another.

Mariandrea Villegas dancing with Phil Wright at The Dance Awards.

Humans may not always recognize greatness right away, but sometimes it's so
clear it simply can't be denied.

You don't have to be a dancer yourself to see when someone's got moves, and a
viral video from choreographer Phil Wright spotlights a kid who's got moves.
Like, wow.

Mariandrea Villegas may be tiny, but she packs a mighty amount of energy, skill,
coordination and x-factor into her dancing. Oh and joy. Did I mention joy?

Villegas, 13, danced alongside choreographer Phil Wright at The Dance Awards and
holy moly. She snatched the stage right out from under him.

"I think I got smoked," he wrote when he shared the video on his Instagram page.
"I need to stop dancing with these kids. 😂 They’re low-key superheroes."

If Villegas is any evidence, he's right. Watch:

Upworthy shared the video on Instagram as well, and people loved it.

"When you find your passion at a young age, it’s a beautiful thing to see,"
wrote one commenter.

"And all with a smile on her face," wrote another.

"This kid is an absolute star 🙌" shared another, echoing the sentiment of the
copious fire emojis in the comments.

Keep on dancing with joy and passion, Mariandrea! We can't wait to see more from
you. (You can follow her on Instagram if you want to see what she's done up to
now. It's impressive.)

MOM SETS UP AN ADORABLE MINI 'TATTOO PARLOR' FOR HER 4-YEAR-OLD SON ON TIKTOK

GETTING INKED, BUT MAKE IT TINY.

Heather Wake
07.23.22

TikTok

He wants to be just like mommy.

When a 4-year-old wanted tattoos that looked just like his mom’s, mom gave him
the full tattoo experience.

People could not get enough of Korrin JB and her son Coleman after seeing
Coleman’s decked out kiddie-style “tattoo parlor.” The wholesome video quickly
amassed 4.5 million views and got a lot of love online.

JB shared with “Good Morning America” that the idea came as she and Coleman were
brainstorming potential summer activities. Coleman pointed at JB’s tattoos and
inspiration struck.

Lucky for Coleman, his mom was once a tattoo parlor apprentice, and “a little
extra,” as she describes herself in the video. She set up a bona fide tattoo
table, threw on some blue rubber gloves and got to work. Don’t fret—no actual
ink was involved. Coleman’s “flash sheet” consisted of temporary tattoos.

By the end of his “appointment,” Coleman’s tiny arm was full of fun cartoons
…even a spider to match mommy’s.

Though JB has full sleeve tattoos, she let everyone know in the caption that,
“Coleman decided a half sleeve was good enough,” as “tattoos take longer than he
thought.”

“Had to break it to him [that] real ones take a wee bit longer,” she joked.

> @korrinjb Creating this tattoo parlour was definitely a core memory for this
> summer 🌞 Coleman decided a half sleeve was good enough saying tattoos take

> Choking on Flowers - Fox Academy

Unsurprisingly, the sweet video received a ton of praise.

"This is the most ADORABLE thing I've seen today," one person wrote.

“Man sat like a champ” added another.

One commenter noted how this sweet activity was actually a vital lesson in
disguise. “This is so cool! So many kids grow up being told they’re not allowed
tattoos. It’s important to let your child know they can express themselves.”

A parent who watched the video shared that their son didn’t like finding out
that kid tattoos wash off. JB admitted in a follow-up TikTok that Coleman had
also been “pretty upset” when he discovered his tattoos “wouldn’t last forever
like mommy’s.”

However, JB gave him the explanation, “You know how one week you like ‘Paw
Patrol,’ and the next week you like construction? This way you can
experiment…and you’ll have a pretty good idea of what you actually want on your
body, and what you really don’t.”

I’m sure there are a lot of adults out there with ink remorse who wish they
tried this method beforehand.

Coleman’s tattoos might be temporary, but JB hopes the experience they shared
will create something much more permanent.

She told GMA, “When you're a kid, you just see all the magic to life…Once you're
an adult, all that magic fades away so quickly. So I really just want to make
the most impactful and fun childhood so that when [Coleman] looks back, he's
always going to have just such bright, fun, constant memories."

Way to go JB and Coleman! This might be one of the coolest summer activities of
all time. It’s certainly made a mark on our hearts.

RICHARD DREYFUSS SHARED INTIMATE PHOTOS OF THE MOMENT HE REALIZED HIS SON HAD A
CONGENITAL DISORDER

"THE MOST TRAUMATIC AND EMOTIONAL MOMENT OF MY LIFE WAS ON JUNE 14 1986."

Richard Dreyfuss at the Webby Awards.

Actor Richard Dreyfuss (star of “Jaws” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”)
shared intimate photos of the birth of his son Ben that showed the shock and
confusion parents experience when realizing their newborn has a birth
abnormality.

On June 14, 1986, Dreyfuss and his wife Jeramie Rain had their second child and
they could tell something was wrong shortly after his delivery. “Your eyes are
not the same,” Ben would later write about his birth. “One is blue, the other is
grey. One is hiding under a partially opened eye-lid; the other is extending far
beyond it, like a potato exploding out of an egg cup.”

It was the “most traumatic and emotional moment of my life,” Richard wrote on
Twitter. “My wife Jeramie gave birth to our second amazing child. And, as these
pictures show, we slowly realized there was a problem with our son.”

> \u201cThe most traumatic and emotional moment of my life was on June 14 1986.

> I am incredibly proud of all my children. https://t.co/Z2Vf1bafVw
>

The actor’s photos are touching because they show the parents experiencing the
incredible beauty of the birth while struggling to make sense of the unexpected.

“I held him and promised him that I would do everything I could [to] save him.
That I would love him no matter what,” the “Mr. Holland’s Opus” star wrote.

Ben would later be diagnosed with Peters anomaly, a rare genetic condition that
causes a clouding of the cornea and eye-structure abnormalities. Over the first
year of Ben’s life, he would have multiple eye operations and would eventually
lose all sight in his left eye.

He explained what life’s like with one eye in a blog post his father shared at
the end of his tweet thread. It’s a raw open letter to himself that details how
his struggles with being different evolved as he developed.

It’s a revealing glimpse into the interior monologue of someone who knows he’s
being stared at but everyone is too polite to bring it up.

> See on Instagram

“Eventually you come around to the idea that much more noticeable than the eye
itself is your reaction to it,” he writes. “You couldn’t make eye contact with
anyone for decades. Upon this realization, you decided to make piercing eye
contact with everyone.”

Ben is a journalist who was in charge of audience development at Mother Jones
for eight years. He has a popular Substack blog called “Good Faith” where he
discusses the intersection of politics and social media from the unique
perspective of a liberal with no problem pointing out progressive excesses.

Richard Dreyfuss’ photos of his son’s birth show that all the fame and acclaim
in the world can be quickly dispatched when we see that there is something wrong
with a child. But on a deeper level, they are an intimate look at the faces of
parents whose lives have been upended in a moment they expected would be wholly
joyous.

It’s a moment that many parents have unfortunately had to weather and hopefully,
the photos will give them comfort knowing that the despair will soon be overcome
by love.
