IT'S EMPATHY PLUS

People often have a misunderstanding about the differences between empathy and
compassion. Empathy, as you might already know, is the ability to see yourself
in another person’s shoes. Compassion, however, includes the added dimension
helping that person.

Consider these two scenarios. Which one expresses more compassion?

Scenario 1

> Cora lifts her head from her hands with a worried look on her face as her
> manager Astrid walks past her desk.
> 
> “You look upset. What’s wrong?” Astrid asks.
> 
> “Well, I’m a bit concerned about my sales performance the past quarter. I’m
> doing everything I can, but it’s not working.”
> 
> Astrid says, “I understand how you feel. We’re all struggling across the
> board. Keep your chin up. You’ll get there.”

Scenario 2

> Cora lifts her head from her hands with a worried look on her face as her
> manager Astrid walks past her desk.
> 
> “You look upset. What’s wrong?” Astrid asks.

Do you see the difference between the two conversations? While they are similar,
in the second scenario, Astrid approaches Cora with a desire to help.

Components of Compassion
It doesn’t take a lot of effort to make the slight shift from empathy to
compassion. Consider how you currently perform in these three areas:



Noticing when things are off: Do you pay attention to body language,
distraction, and engagement? Does the person you are talking to seem stressed,
angry, or depressed? Being mindful of changes in behavior is a crucial component
to increasing compassion awareness.



Listening without judging: Are others making excuses, passing blame, or
disengaged? Or are they explaining and exhausted? Suspending judgmental thinking
and assuming positive intent opens your mind and heart.



Being considerate while making comments: Sometimes comments, especially under
pressure, can be unintentionally negative and biting. Take care to soften
opinions, particularly during conversations with someone going through the
wringer.


Increasing personal awareness in these three key areas is one step toward being
more compassionate to those around you. Putting your sympathetic side into
action and fostering a more caring culture helps grow your leadership and
compassion talents.

Trying to help a group dealing with mental and emotional challenges? Take
compassionate action. A study conducted by the University of Queensland finds
that compassionate workplaces link to decreases in depression, anxiety, and
psychological distress.

Fun Fact: Stress levels at work decrease significantly through the exchange of
positivity between employees. And further, a 2012 study by BMC Public Health
shows that when employees have greater bonds at work, they contribute to the
community more.
