Print In 1915, half a century after the issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation that freed most (but not all) enslaved people, Carter G. Woodson, famed Harvard historian, is credited with introducing a week that would celebrate the contributions of Black people in the United States. Woodson chose the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. The celebration caught on and many states adopted Negro History Week. By the end of the 1960s, Negro History Week evolved into Black History Month, mostly on college campuses. It wasn’t until 1976 that President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in the United States. Today, the heritage and legacy of Black people is celebrated in Canada, the UK, and other countries around the globe. Need help with this video? Click Here Aviator Bessie Coleman wasn’t recognized as a pioneer in aviation until after her death. Unable to attend flight school in the United States as a Black woman, Coleman learned that she could learn to fly in France, a country that didn’t discriminate based on gender or race. Since the flight application needed to be written in French, Coleman took French classes at night to become fluent, submitted her application, then moved to France. In 1919, she became the first licensed Black pilot in the world. Black or African American? If you're in the United States, and have ever been unsure, remember that neither is wrong and that both are a matter of personal preference. So, when in doubt, ask the person (or group) what they would prefer. Both terms are an extension of the attempt by descendants of people who were often stolen from their native lands and sold into permanent bondage to name themselves. According to researchers at Ferris State University, the term “Black” came into vogue in 1966, popularized by Stokely Carmichael, leader of the Black Panther Party and founder of the Black Power movement. In 1988, Jesse Jackson led a national movement to adopt the term “African American.” Take Note: Historian Woodson and minister Jesse E. Moorland founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), an organization dedicated to researching and promoting achievements by Black Americans and other people of African descent. Today, the name has been updated to the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), an organization that offers festivals, conferences, and resources to study and promote Black history and culture.
