William Turvill, North America Editor, Press Gazette | @wturvill Share this newsletter|View in browser Good morning. Next week is a big one for advocates of the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act (JCPA), which would force Google and Facebook to pay US publishers for the use of news content. On Thursday, the bill is due to be voted on by a Senate committee. For today’s newsletter, my colleague Bron Maher has taken a deep dive look into the legislation and recent amendments that have been made to ease its passage through Washington. Some in the industry remain sceptical that the JCPA will pass into law any time soon, but the bill has momentum and is worth taking seriously. Elsewhere, we reveal today that two more British tabloids are plotting a major expansion in the United States. UK editor Charlotte Tobitt writes that the Mirror and Express, both owned by publishing giant Reach, could together employ more than 100 journalists in the US. It’s not difficult to see why they view America as an opportunity. As our latest US news website traffic ranking documents, Mail Online and The Sun have firmly established themselves in the American market. Scroll down for more on these stories, plus my guide to this week’s other must-read stories. To our US readers, we wish you an enjoyable Labor Day weekend. See you next week. William REVISED JCPA EXPLAINED A recently revised version of America’s JCPA includes changes to which publishers are eligible to bargain and introduces protections aimed at preventing tech companies from retaliating against news providers. MORE BRITISH TABLOIDS ARE EYEING UP AMERICA Following the success of Mail Online and The Sun, the Mirror and Express websites are plotting expansion in the United States. TOP 50 US NEWS WEBSITES, JULY 2022 The Mail Online was one of only three top ten sites by number of visits to grow its US audience in July, according to the latest monthly ranking of news websites from Press Gazette.
