LONG ISLAND CITY, Queens (PIX 11) — Police are investigating a subway attack at
the Queens Borough Plaza station that sent one person to the hospital.

Subway commuters in the area are now on high alert.

call

“It’s scary to ride the train these days. It’s really scary,” said commuter
Crystal Greene.

A man believed to be in his 50s hit a 31-year-old victim in the back of the head
with a pipe, police said. Detectives tell PIX11 News it happened just after
midnight when the two got into an argument on the 7-train platform. The victim
was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for his injuries. The man fled the
scene, according to police.

The city has seen several violent incidents on the subway this week. Less than a
mile away at the Queens Plaza Station, a man slashed a 29-year-old tourist in
the left side of his neck while on the mezzanine level of the E, M, R train
lines Thursday morning. The victim was taken to a local hospital in stable
condition.

This past Monday an innocent bystander was killed in a Bronx subway shooting
that left five others injured. The next day a woman allegedly attacked a cellist
in the head with a metal bottle in Herald Square. Commuters say they plan to
remain vigilant.

“It’s terrifying,” said commuter Jesse Daddio. “You just got to have your guard
up honestly.”

“We have to take the subway, you know,” said commuter Wil who declined to give
his last name. “We just got to be careful. Ride where there are a lot of people
and whatnot. You just have to know how to go about it.”

According to city data murder and rape incidents are down in the subways
compared to the same time last year, however, other crimes are up including
robbery which rose five percent.

Felony assaults have also risen 10 % since last year.
