First, I've never driven a 530i or 530e, although maybe I had a 4-cylinder F10 as a loaner once a few years ago. Meaning, I can only go by my experience with our '22 330ix. And when we first got that car for my wife, I noted that it was very good, the power was reasonable with good response, and certainly relieved my eventual annoyance with her previous Alfa Romeo Giulia. Second, though I'm no "hot rodder" , I like a car with "sufficient" power and excellent response. So all my BMW's, '05 and '08 3-series, '11, '14, '18, '22 5's have been 6-cylinder models (the larger 6's on the 3-series). I've been driving since 1970, so that gives an indication of my age! My first car was a '70 Dodge Challenger 340-V8, that was a bit of a hotrod. I'm just saying, I do my part for energy savings, especially in our house, having spent at least $20K replacing windows and doors, switching out to LED bulbs long ago, etc., etc. For my car, I don't go crazy with worrying about gas mileage. We did get 40 mpg on a recent trip to NY in the 330i, and I've gotten high 30's with the 540i, so they aren't really gas guzzlers. Who knows what cars will offer in the next 5-6 years as we transition to some new energy source, be it electric or something else. I hope I can still get an I6 in my next 5-series, I'm not quite ready to go electric. Just saying that overall, while the 330ix has "decent" power, it is nowhere near the smooth and much more powerful 540i and I wouldn't be super happy driving the smaller engine every day. That makes sense! My driving history is MUCH shorter. My first car was a '14 Mercedes C300 w/ a V6. It drove well and had a nice amount of power. I definitely enjoyed it. My 530e has enough power and I'm not left feeling like I need more. That said, when I drove the 530i I did feel the need for its turbo to spool up before it felt decent enough. I don't recall if I drove the 540i at this point, but likely not. Although it packed a lot of power I wasn't excited about its fuel economy. I would have considered it if BMW offered the 545e in the US at the time (I6 w/ HV motor) though. I usually exceed 60 mpg in my 530e so 40s wouldn't excite me much. My next car will be a fully electric vehicle (already ordered a fully electric one for my wife). There are a lot of things I really love about that side of things. That said, I get that we're all optimizing uniquely. The more relevant one is fuel consumption (typically reported in gallons/100 miles or liters/100km). MPG makes a 12-cylinder Ferrari and a Prius both seem better than they really are. Increasing MPG, as some point, makes minimal difference in the actual amount of fuel used. Going from 20 MPG to 40 MPG saves a lot more fuel than going from 40 MPG to 60 MPG. For a 540i vs a 530e the 540i will get decent fuel economy on the highway, but it will get pretty strained in city driving. Where it’s fuel economy will drop to the teens. The 530e is able to use EV for that to cut fuel out entirely. That‘s what I mean that the 40s it can get in its best conditions wouldn’t excite me much. As the 530e exceeds that on its worst case. But fuel economy isn’t the goal of everyone. And that’s OK too. 2020 BMW 530e xDrive | Imperial Blue Metallic | Sport Line | Mocha Nappa w/ Contrast Stitching | Executive Package | Driving Assistance Plus Package | Luxury Seating Package | Parking Assistance Package | Heated Steering Wheel | HK Surround Sound System Reply Save Like EZAIRCON4JC · #65 · May 20, 2023 * Add to quote * Share Only show this user If fuel economy is your goal, why not a Honda Civic? Same reason that BMW makes the 5-Series in a variety of power plant configurations. The pool of buyers optimize in various ways. I enjoy how the BMW drives and love the complete package. It isn‘t as fuel efficient as a Prius Prime, for instance, but not as boring to drive. Nor as back breaking on a 5 hour drive. But the efficiency loss isn’t very much either. I am closely watching what BMW does with the i5 G60 to help me decide if I should snag it when it get to its LCI and hopefully the inflated market prices cool off a bit. 2020 BMW 530e xDrive | Imperial Blue Metallic | Sport Line | Mocha Nappa w/ Contrast Stitching | Executive Package | Driving Assistance Plus Package | Luxury Seating Package | Parking Assistance Package | Heated Steering Wheel | HK Surround Sound System Reply Save Like A AUTOPUTZER · #67 · May 21, 2023 (Edited) * Add to quote * Share Only show this user A good way to decide how which engine you "need" is to pull up the Sport Display (virtual torque and power gauges) on the iDrive during test drives. Turbocharged BMW engines produce their maximum torque from about 1500 RPIM to about 6000 RPM. Torque is what causes acceleration. Power is the ability to produce torque at speed. Additionally, a conventional automatic transmission, with a torque converter, will amplify the torque produced by the engine as it is transferred to the transmission when there is slip (engine speed greater than transmission input shaft speed). In my typical "hyper-mile-ing" driving style, I rarely see 80 lb-ft of engine torque on my Sport Display.l I hit Hardee's for a bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit a few times a week. I go before 6 a.m., avoiding traffic. I take the beachfront road on my 12-mile round trip, where the speed limit is 35 MPH. This morning, I got a displayed 29.9 MPG in my 535i. In Frau Putzer's X3 xDrive 30i, I can often break 35 MPG. In a 330i or 530i, RWD and 300 to 500 pounds lighter the X3, I could probably break 40 MPG. The average per capita gasoline usage in the US is 1.15 gallons/day. Last year, the Putzer household's usage was 0.77 gallons/(person-day). We're at about 0.80 gallons/(person-day) so far in 2023. Back in 2006, with a long-distance commute (56 miles/day), a lot of business travel by car, and less fuel-efficient cars (Accord V6, M3), we were at 2.0 gallons/(person-day), 1.6 gallons/(person-day) excluding business travel. If BMW would offer a spare tire (and a hole under the trunk to put it), I'd consider a 330e or 530e. But, that spare tire and storage hole are critical requirements for me. My almost-twelve-mile run yielded 36.6 MPG. I was a little over 37 MPG before entering Bubba Estates. My gas pump (actual) MPG is ranging about 0.5% to about 1.5% higher than the displayed MPG. My regular Chevron was out of 93 AKI about a month ago, so I tried another one near the Bubbaville sewage treatment plant. That station's Pump #5 seems to be dispensing about 1% larger "gallons" than my usual gas pump. They're also charging only $0.67/gallon more for 93 AKI over 87 AKI. It took two consecutive fill-ups at that pump to get a good estimate of the "correction factor." Has a modern, fresh take, still with many of the usual "5" cues. The front grilles are almost exact G30 replicas, not sure what is so terrible about the headlights. Rear is cleaned up a bit and streamlined. I'm glad to see they didn't follow the kind of upward curve of the 3's and other model's taillight design. Side looks freshened up a bit, slightly softer lines and cleaner. I hope the updated configurator is up soon. I think you just might be having a "knee-jerk" reaction to a few pictures, but certainly, follow your kind of obvious path to the MB and be happy! BTW, have you all seen the latest Car & Driver review of the i7? They opined that it far surpasses the new electric MB "S" in form and function. It was a good article. Rather than go crazy with some outlandish designs (i.e., MB), the i7 retains a more classic BMW appearance to its ICE brethren. UPDATE: I'm looking at the 3/4 and full-view side picture of the G60 5 on the BMW site and there is an embedded smaller picture of a G30 there. Like I said, the side is more sleek. I have a feeling the G30 may not take too long to start looking "old", even with the great-looking LCI rear tallights. I need to start saving up a bit for my planned '25 or '26. Looks more like a contrasting gray trim, similar to the current MSport rear valance. Might give a lighter look to the side since the body color doesn't extend all the way down. Not a fan of the plastic trim behind the rear door glass, I always thought that was a design trick used on cars that are more 'style' than substance. Other than that no surprises and glad the grille looks almost restrained compared to others in the line up. That being said, the G30 was immediate want / have to have with brain churning regarding which financial compromises would have to be made to shift $$$$$ around for the check I knew I was going to be writing. Being on the opposite side as the sun is how you look for and see every little scratch. The unpainted, black plastic cladding on the lower body and bumpers was a 1980's thing. It was cheap and it also made recycling easier. The EU requires car manufacturers to be responsible for recycling 85% of any of their cars that are turned into them. If that black cladding makes it here, where 80% of a car is recycled just by the "Invisible Hand" (people doing what is in their own best interest), buy a big bottle of CRC's "303" protectant, and splooge the cladding monthly. I really helps to have a mechanic's stool when doing this. One of the principles of good automotive design (styling) is that similar types of curves have similar radiuses. The front bumper has a lot of relatively sharp edges, where the rest of the car doesn't. The nose of the LCI-ed G05 X5 has a lot of sharp edges, more than the rest of the car/truck. I had a C/K8 (8th generation) Chevy Silverado. Mine way a MY 2000. They later "refreshed" the body by redesigning the front clip (grill, bumper, hood, fenders). The new clip was more angular than the cab and bed. It looked weird. BMW's falling into the same trap. Here's "Autoputzer, Jr.," big, white, and cheap... just like Autoputzer, Sr. ... also primitive, unstable, top-heavy, and high-emissions.... just like Autoputzer, Sr. But, the curves on the front matched the curves on the rest of the truck. Here's a 2005, refreshed, C/K8. The sharp edges on the hood don't match the soft edges on the back. I'd get up to $4000 off of GM vehicles, grandfathered in on the old rules of the GM MasterCard. I bought Autoputzer, Jr. for just above dealer invoice, about $18k with an MSRP of about $21k. I kept Autoputzer, Jr. six years and 74k miles, and still got almost half was I paid for it. It still had the original tires at 74k miles, too. That was a milestone in... wait for it... Tire Whispering.
