Summary

The Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPI (M), will stage nationwide
protests Sept. 1-7 to demand several concessions and denounce increased prices
of essential commodities. As a part of their action, organizers will hold
demonstrations of varying types, including blockades at unspecified rally
venues, through Sept. 7. On Sept. 7, activists will protest outside prominent
government offices. Other like-minded organizations may participate in the
protest campaign. Although participation will probably vary by locale, the
largest turnout will likely occur in states with considerable CPI(M) support,
such as Bihar, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. Larger gatherings could draw tens of
thousands of attendees.

Authorities will likely monitor any such rallies and may move to disperse overly
disruptive crowds. Clashes between police and activists, as well as between
supporters of opposing rival camps, cannot be ruled out. Demonstrators may march
along or block roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions. Associated
