WALK IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF TORRANCE HOMETOWN HERO LOUIS ZAMPERINI

TORRANCE >> You’ve read the New York Times bestselling biography of local hero
Louis Zamperini.

You’ve either seen or are planning to watch the Angelina Jolie-directed movie
adaptation of “Unbroken” released today.

And you plan to watch the Rose Parade on New Year’s Day featuring a posthumous
Zamperini as grand marshal and the city of Torrance float (fifth in the lineup)
that’s dedicated to the city’s favorite son.

Now it’s time to walk in the footsteps of the legend himself, who grew up in
Torrance and put the community’s name on the map at the very outset of his
Olympic running career.

“Whether Torrance realizes it or not, this recognition of Louis Zamperini, as
the leading high school miler in the United States, means a lot to the
community,” the Torrance Herald opined in 1935. “It means the city of Torrance
will be mentioned in worldwide dispatches every time that Louis goes out for a
major track meet. When he won his championship last summer, a Torrance resident
on a visit to the old country read about his performance in a daily newspaper of
that foreign land. Every other follower of sports in this, and every other
country in the world, read about the black-haired, smiling youth from Torrance —
a little city that is practically unknown outside of a radius of 100 miles or
so, or was until Zamperini put it on the world map of sport.”

Sadly, Torrance has never returned the favor — until now.

Check out this Torrance map of the essential places in Zamperini’s life:

•GRAPHIC: Map of Louis Zamperini landmarks in Torrance

• 1) The Old Torrance home where Zamperini grew up, 2028 Gramercy Ave.

The modest house was lovingly restored by the founders of Save Historic Old
Torrance, or SHOT, Don and Bonnie Mae Barnard.

The couple discovered where a 14-year-old Zamperini had carved his name on a
wooden beam when he should have been painting the house. Zamperini also
celebrated his 89th birthday there.

SHOT is hosting tours of the home from 1-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday that
includes peeks at Zamperini’s old room, his rifle, his mother’s sewing machine
and other memorabilia. Members get in free; membership costs $10.

• 2) Torrance Historical Society, 1345 Post Ave.

This former library hosts the largest collection of Zamperini memorabilia
accessible to the public, according to First Vice President Debbie Hays, who was
a close friend of Zamperini.

Among the items on rotating display: track trophies, wartime diaries and his
World War II-era death certificate, issued when Zamperini went missing in action
and was presumed dead.

•3) Torrance High School, 2200 W. Carson St.

Founded in 1917 — it is one of the oldest high schools in California — Zamperini
started his track career here and graduated in 1935.

Sadly, the original field Zamperini ran on at 218th Street and Martina Avenue
was turned into a school parking lot, Hays said. Incidentally, if the front of
the school looks familiar that’s because it was used extensively as Sunnydale
High School in the television series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”.

•4) Zamperini Field, 3301 Airport Drive.

When Zamperini went missing in action and was declared dead, what was then
called the Lomita Flight Strip was renamed Zamperini Memorial Field in 1944.

With the war over and Zamperini very much alive, the airfield was renamed
Zamperini Field. The “memorial” part of the name was quietly dropped at a 1946
ceremony attended by Zamperini himself.

A small display case inside the airport building itself has a number of
Zamperini-related artifacts including the Nazi flag he ripped off during the
1936 Olympics and his U.S. Olympic jacket.

The road into the airport, now called Zamperini Way, was formerly called Aero
Way until longtime friend Jim Standifer persuaded city officials to re-name it,
Hays said.

•5) Zamperini Stadium, 2125 Lincoln Ave.

The “Torrance Tornado,” as the whirlwind Zamperini was known during his running
day, never actually competed at the Torrance High School stadium, which opened
in 1962.

It was renamed in 1987 at the behest of students and was refurbished and
rededicated in 2010 at a ceremony Zamperini attended.

Zamperini’s public memorial service was also held there last summer.
