A BRIEF WELCOME

A few of us started this server looking for a small place to land together in
the 'fediverse' – hopefully a safer place. We're front-end web makers who value
humans over technology, and embrace diversity on an open, accessible,
progressively-enhanced web.

We were not expecting so much interest! It's exciting! But, as one small server
on the network, and new moderators, we're not set up to grow large or fast. This
isn't a corporate venue, it's our virtual living room – and we have a small
apartment.

It's hard turning people away, but we think it's important not to take on more
than we can care for, in our spare time. So our registrations are currently
paused, with a few exceptions. Please bear with us – the goal is not to be
exclusive, but to be sustainable in our growth.

OUR CODE OF CONDUCT

Front-end.social is a community built on respect and inclusivity. As a member of
front-end.social, you agree to uphold an environment of consideration for all
members, especially those from traditionally minoritized communities.

If you think you can resolve a problem you’re having with someone’s behavior
without getting admins involved, we encourage you to. Early interventions from
someone’s friends and acquaintances are way more likely to actually fix
someone’s bad behavior than letting it fester until we need to step in. Please
feel free to report behavior to admins if you think it’s something you can’t
deal with.

Admins reserve the right to take whatever action deemed necessary if these
guidelines are violated, including but not limited to: warnings, temporary
suspension, and site bans. Any language or action that expresses, reinforces,
upholds or sympathizes with any form of systemic social domination is considered
oppressive and is grounds for removal at any level deemed appropriate by the
admins. All potential violations are manually reviewed by a human being; we do
not use any automated systems to take disciplinary action, although we may use
automated tooling to help detect certain violations.

MEMBERSHIP & INVITATION EXPECTATIONS

While we may be the first front-end focused Mastodon instance, it is not our
goal to be the one de-facto instance. We want our community to remain a
reasonable size to promote a healthy culture. We encourage others to build other
similar communities!

Front-end.social is semi-open. We are still actively working through what this
looks like. We are working on our application process, which will hopefully
include a more tailored application form than the default Mastodon one. Thanks
for bearing with us.

Please help us make this instance inviting and inclusive. If you are interested
in front-end web development (or don’t mind hanging with those who do) and you
support our values, you're welcome here!

RECOMMENDED POST ETIQUETTE

Since this is a semi-open instance, we have some guidelines and recommendations
for joining the community outlined below. Please keep in mind that these
guidelines are designed to encourage positive and supportive interactions within
front-end.social, not to police behavior.

Community members are encouraged to share and recommend these best practices to
their fellow community members, especially when someone joins on your invite.

🗣 Introduce yourself!

Once you've had some time to get the lay of the land, it's a great idea to write
a quick #introduction (and include that hashtag so others can find it).

❤️ Before you promote, participate!

It's super cool to share the stuff you're working on, invite people to events,
ask for help, share work opportunities/gigs, etc. But please try not to make
these your first or only posts! Join in the conversation, say hello, make an
introduction above, even share *other* people's stuff. All of these things will
help you build connections and earn trust. Besides, people are way more likely
to pay attention to (and boost/click/share) the stuff you share if they
recognize you!

In general, promoting stuff is good. It's how we learn what's going on, and help
each other. If you're active in the community and sharing something you think
others might like, you don't have to worry. Drive-by promotion doesn't help the
community, so please try to avoid it.

🚨 Please consider using "content warnings."

We ask that you put the following topics behind a content warning (CW) (photos
can be marked with the eye symbol - after uploading, before posting):

 * graphic violence or gore
 * flashing video/gifs
 * spoilers

We encourage you to toot about your lived experience freely, without content
warning. We don't support and will not tolerate the silencing of
underrepresented and minoritized people sharing their truths – or pointing out
issues in the industry and platform. That said, if you are posting on triggering
topics, we encourage you to consider the content warning feature.

When in doubt, CW. Our goal is to create a space where we are not overwhelmed by
negative posts or bombarded by the 24 hour news cycle. Twitter's algorithm
encouraged doom scrolling. We don't want to replicate that here.

CW are also often used as courtesy to help followers pre-screen sensitive or
particularly noisy topics. Examples of this might include meta-discussion about
Mastodon itself (commonly tagged 'fedi meta') or mental health (tag 'mh'). This
sort of use is not required on our instance, but it a norm of Mastodon etiquette
at large.

🌄 Image captions

Please add descriptive image captions to any images you post. We have added
custom CSS to the site to highlight where descriptions are added, and their
presence or absence on images.

 * Intentional misinformation

THE FOLLOWING TYPES OF CONTENT ARE EXPLICITLY DISALLOWED AND WILL RESULT IN A
BAN FROM FRONT-END.SOCIAL:

 * Promoting the oppression of any group based on gender, gender identity and
expression, sexual orientation, disability, personal appearance, body size,
race, ethnicity, age, religion, nationality, or class
 * Conduct promoting the ideology of fascism, radical nationalism, or xenophobia
 * Racism or advocation of racism
 * Sexism or advocation of sexism

 * Content that is illegal in nations where our members are active and content
   that facilitates illegal activity

Any conduct intended to stalk, harass, or intimidate other people, or to impede
other people from utilizing the service, or to degrade the performance of the
service, or to harass others, or to incite others to perform any of the
aforementioned actions is forbidden and subject to punishment up to and
including a ban from front-end.social.

This can include, but is not limited to, the following behaviors:

 * Continuing to engage in conversation with a person that has specifically
requested for said engagement to cease may be considered harassment,
regardless of platform-specific privacy tools employed.
 * Aggregating, posting, and/or disseminating a person's demographic, personal,
or private data without express permission.
 * Inciting people to engage another person in continued interaction or
discussion after a person has requested for said engagement to cease and
   desist may be considered harassment.
 * Posting and/or disseminating a person's posts ("toots"), including screen
captures or any other content without express permission.
 * Intentionally posting or disseminating libel, slander, or other
   disinformation.

This Code of Conduct applies both to content on front-end.social and to public
spaces when an individual is representing front-end.social or its community.

Reports of abusive, harassing, or otherwise unacceptable behavior may be made by
using the report button. All reports will be reviewed and dealt with as soon as
possible. Admins are obligated to maintain confidentiality with regard to the
reporter of an incident.

The admins reserve the right to revoke any user's content on or access to
front-end.social, at any time, for any reason.

Our current moderators are: @mia, @estelle, @keithjgrant, @kitt, and @grigs. You
can reach us through the @mods account.

No creepy crawlies (robot.txt set to disallow). No secret crypto mining
operations.

A SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT TECH FLAME-WARS

You are welcome to your own opinions regarding technology, the web, code
formatting, and the pronunciation of “gif” but we ask that if you choose to
express these opinions, you do so in a respectful way.

Furthermore—and perhaps even more importantly—strive to extend the benefit of
the doubt to others as they express their opinions. Rather than assuming a
200-character post encompasses the full extent of a complicated issue, ask
clarifying questions before launching a rebuttal—or simply keep scrolling. Don’t
make the admins “choose a side” because a disagreement gets out of hand.
