WHY WE DO IT Across Sub-Saharan Africa, literacy skills among learners in primary school are below the expected levels. This is due to a range of factors, often including a lack of library infrastructure, shortage of reading materials, an inadequate number of teachers equipped with library management skills, as well as insufficient policies to promote the development of libraries. DID YOU KNOW THAT; * More than 80% of public primary schools have no access to a library? * Only 2 in 5 grade 4 learners are meeting expectations in reading appropriate English text? * Teacher training colleges do not train teachers on library science while the curriculum allocates compulsory library/maktaba lessons for all classes? * Having a library in a school is associated with 7 marks improvement in the mean score? HOW WE DO IT FOCUS AREAS Our Focus is on three key interventions that are well designed and proven to improve literacy outcomes. MODEL SCHOOL LIBRARIES ESTABLISH MODEL SCHOOL LIBRARIES IN PUBLIC PRIMARY SCHOOLS WITH QUALITY AND AGE-RELEVANT LOCAL STORYBOOKS. TO ENHANCE ACCESSIBILITY, RUN ENJOYABLE READING AND WRITING PROGRAMMES, AND IMPROVE LITERACY AND LIFE SKILLS. Learn More CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT Empower teachers and learners as teacher-librarians and Junior Reading Champions (JRCs), respectively, to run sustainable literacy programmes. Learn More ADVOCACY Advocate for effective literacy policies and measures that improve the quality education value chain, from teacher-training institutions to schools and communities.
