Read More THE HISTORY Melaka was founded in the 1400s by Parameswara, the last King of Singapura (now known as Singapore). While fleeing from the enemies’ threat, Parameswara was resting under a tree when he saw his followers’ hunting dogs fighting with a small mouse deer, before they were kicked by the deer. Amused by this incident, he named the place, Melaka, after the tree. During the 16th century, Melaka had developed into the most important trading port in Southeast Asia. Due to its strategic position in the Straits of Melaka which provides a direct route between India and China, merchants from China, Arabia, India, and Europe were the regular traders then who passed through the port. Hence, all these gave birth to the legacy of a rich heritage community – Peranakan. Peranakan means “local born”. The Peranakan traces their origins back to the voyage of Chinese Admiral Cheng Ho in 15th Century and is characterised by their unique hybridisation of ancient Chinese with local Nusantara region cultures resulting from interracial marriage.
