Do a team assessment of your remote communication this week

Do a team assessment of your remote communication this week

When your team works in different locations, it takes deliberate care and
attention from everyone to keep information flowing, to collaborate well, and to
create space to discuss big ideas. Talk as a group about how well you’re
communicating — and how to improve any weak spots.

How will you introduce the idea of talking about remote communication to your
team? Draft your message. For example, “I’d like to devote the first 20 minutes
of this week’s team meeting to talking about team communication. Please come
prepared to share what’s working well and what we should change.”
I’d like to devote the first 20 minutes of this week’s team meeting to talking
about team communication. Please come prepared to share what’s working well and
what we should change.
What questions will you ask to inspire honest conversation? For example, “How
would you rate how we share updates, news, and ideas?” or “What could we do
better in terms of team recognition and celebrations?” Let your team know at
least one day in advance that you’d like to talk about your team’s remote
communication — and include your question prompts.
How would you rate how we share updates, news, and ideas? Does everyone like the
Virtual Coffee Shop chat? Do we need a more formal channel or use one we already
have?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

During the meeting, how will you follow up to zero in on concrete communication
improvements? For example, you could ask open-ended questions like, “Why do you
think collaboration is such a challenge?” or “How could we share updates more
efficiently?”
How could we share updates more efficiently?
Choose a time now to have this discussion. Then, after the meeting, identify one
or two improvements to try. Set a reminder to check in with your direct reports
after a couple of weeks to see whether the changes are working. If not, tweak.
If so, keep going and consider doing a periodic assessment (perhaps each
quarter) to see if you can make your remote team communication even better!
Revisit every quarter.
