BOARD
FOR MEDIA SERVICES

On the 25th November 2022, ERGA adopted its position paper on the European
Commission’s proposal for a European Media Freedom Act (EMFA). This major
legislative project aims at protecting media freedom, pluralism and independence
as well as ensuring a well-functioning internal market for media in the EU.
European citizens need to access an independent and pluralistic media offer in
order to form their opinions and thus effectively participate in the democratic
life.

ERGA WELCOMES THE ENTRY INTO FORCE OF THE DSA, WHICH WILL BRING ABOUT A SAFER
DIGITAL ENVIRONMENT IN EUROPE, AND IS PREPARED FOR ITS APPLICATION

On the 27th of October the Digital Services Act (DSA) has been published in the
Official Journal of the EU. ERGA and its members welcome this important step
that led to the entry into force of the new rules on the 16th of November.

The European Commission published on 16th of September its proposal for a
European Media Freedom Act (EMFA), a major legislative project. European
citizens who have access to free and pluralistic media can form their informed
opinions and fruitfully participate in democratic debate. In this regard, a
well-functioning internal market for media is essential and can help foster
media freedom and pluralism.

17TH ERGA PLENARY: EUROPEAN MEDIA REGULATORS GATHER AND DISCUSS HOW TO PROVIDE
INPUT FOR KEY EUROPEAN LEGISLATIVE PROPOSALS

On 21st June 2022, the 17th ERGA plenary meeting took place in Brussels as the
first in person meeting of the group in two years. Members gathered to take
stock of ERGA’s work, in a crucial year for the legislative framework regarding
the media sector. They exchanged views with the European Commission on current
policy initiatives, for instance the upcoming European Media Freedom Act and the
recently published strengthened Code of Practice on Disinformation.

ERGA SHARES THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION GOALS AND CALLS FOR A HIGHER LEVEL OF
TRANSPARENCY OF POLITICAL ADVERTISING

ERGA has published its statement on the European Commission’s proposal for a
Regulation on the transparency and targeting of political advertising. ERGA
members fully support the approach of the European Commission imposing
obligations on the whole value chain of political advertising as well as its
ambition to ensure fair and transparent campaigns, both online and offline.
