CTE CTSO HIGHLIGHTS: BUSINESS, MARKETING & FINANCE

One of the many exciting benefits for students in Leander ISD Career & Technical
Education classes is the opportunity to join and participate in a variety of
Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSO).

These organizations provide students the opportunity to apply their CTE
curriculum in competitive events as well as develop their leadership skills for
the future. Students in our Business, Marketing and Finance program of study
have an opportunity to participate in DECA as a CTSO.

DECA is a national organization representing nearly 250,000 members from across
the country. Part of the organization’s mission is to prepare future leaders and
entrepreneurs for careers in fields such as marketing, finance, hospitality and
management.

“We are involved, both individually and collaboratively, in multi-level
competitions and local community service projects,” Cedar Park High School
teacher and DECA advisor Dianna Gage said. “Especially after COVID, the
communication and soft skills we work on and practice are needed in all walks of
life and business. It doesn’t matter if you want to be an influencer, work for a
fortune 500 company, or be a professional athlete, DECA can assist in reaching
those goals.”

MACY’S IS CLOSING 150 STORES

Macy’s is getting a new, smaller, but more luxurious look designed to turn
around the troubled retailer and keep the century-and-a-half old brand relevant
to rapidly changing demands from shoppers.



First, Macy’s will have to downsize. The company is closing 150 underperforming
stores — 50 by the end of 2024 and the other 100 over the next few years. By
2026, it will have just 350 Macy’s stores, the company announced.



Second, the company will focus on its successful Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury
brands — luxury stores that have outperformed the Macy’s brand. It will open
more, smaller versions of those stores over the next several years.



Macy’s turnaround strategy reflects a shift in retail and US shoppers.



As the middle class has shrunk in recent decades, the retail market has split:
Lower-end stores focused on cost-savings, such as Walmart, have done
particularly well. But so have luxury brands, as shoppers have been able to keep
up their spending, despite higher prices.



So Macy’s is chasing wealthier shoppers with luxury brands such as
Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury, and it’s pulling back on some of its full-scale
department stores that cater primarily to more middle-class customers.

(Bloomberg) — Few obstacles seem to be in the way of Bitcoin’s current rally.
The largest cryptocurrency rose for the second straight day and marched closer
to its all-time high, driven by expectations of exchange-traded funds’ robust
demand at the week’s start.

The most liquid token rose as much as 6.7% to $67,069 – its first move above
$67,000 since November 2021. The token has surged around 60% so far this year,
outpacing traditional asset classes such as stocks by a wide margin.

“These conditions are reminiscent of some moments of late 2020 and 2021, of the
bull market and extreme optimism,” said Jaime Baeza, founder at crypto hedge
fund AnB Investments. “There is high leverage in the market and levels of greed
are getting extreme.”

At the heart of this frenzy for the largest crypto token lies seemingly
insatiable demand from US-listed Bitcoin ETFs, which began trading on Jan. 11.
Bitcoin has jumped about 186% in the last 12 months.

Net inflows of $7.35 billion have been invested since the debut of US Bitcoin

Resilience and love, two characteristics that define abolitionist Harriet
Tubman’s legacy. February is Black History Month, but what about the future?
Cayuga County, where Tubman’s legacy endures, recently launched a “Discover
Black-Owned Businesses” website to help them grow.

“Black excellence means that we know who we are, we define what we want, we
stand on our square, we’re unapologetic about what we can have and we will have
what we say we can have,” said entrepreneur Melody Smith Johnson.

While Tubman is known for her role as a conductor on the Underground Railroad
and spy in the Civil War, she was also a successful business woman. As an
entrepreneur, Johnson knows he’s here today thanks, in part, to the people who
came before him.

“I’m here because men and women who look like me survived the middle passage,”
she said. “I’m here because my ancestors didn’t give in. I’m here because
Harriet Tubman took dozens of trips back and forth and risked her life.”

Rishi Sunak will announce reforms to help small businesses on Monday as he tries
to shake off growing doubts about his struggling administration ahead of the
general election expected this year.

The prime minister, speaking at the government’s Business Connect conference in
the Midlands, will announce new help for apprentices, cuts to red tape and a new
task force for female entrepreneurs.

The announcement is part of a policy blitz by Sunak as he tries to close a
yawning gap in the opinion polls between his ruling Conservatives and the
opposition Labor party with just months until an election.

The Tory party has been convulsed with speculation about Sunak’s leadership
after a series of political mis-steps, with some MPs discussing the merits of
ousting him before the election and installing the fourth Conservative premier
in this parliament.

TIKTOK SAYS SMALL BUSINESSES GENERATED BILLIONS ON ITS PLATFORM IN 2023

Social media platform TikTok posted self-funded research that claims small
businesses generated $14.7 billion in combined revenue through its platform in
2023. The report arrived on the same day a bill that would require the company
to enter a buyout with an American firm passed through the US House with
overwhelming bipartisan support.

The study was conducted in mid-2023 before the release of the platform’s
e-commerce system, TikTok Shop, which was officially launched last September.
Oxford Economics, the consultancy firm behind the report, based its findings on
a survey of 7,500 TikTok users in the US, 1,050 small business owners with
TikTok accounts, and internal data provided by the company.

The research concluded that the company contributed $24.2 billion to US gross
domestic product last year and helped small business owners generate $14.7
billion in revenue. Through sales increases attributable to their use of TikTok,
small companies paid an extra $5.3 billion in taxes, while the platform’s US
operations provided an additional $2 billion. Among the small business owners
contacted by Oxford Economics, 39% said the platform was critical to their
operations, and 69% attributed increased sales to TikTok.

Digital marketing is one of the fastest growing in-demand skills for 2024,
ranked in Coursera’s

top 10 list in their Job Skills Of 2024 report. The report unveiled that
professions within digital marketing, which is set to witness a 6% increase in
growth—higher than the average job growth rate—by 2032, are unstable on the rise
and will be fueled by the emergence of new marketing technologies, such as as
AI-powered insights and content generation tools. It’s a sign that AI will not
render jobs in this industry obsolete but complement them. The report also noted
that the industry will be worth $1.5 trillion by the year 2030.

The digital marketing industry is strongly spurred on by consumer trends,

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) Erick
Thohir is disappointed with the number of BUMNs that do not submit business
plans. Of the 142 BUMNs, Erick said only 10 made deposits.

“Can’t you just ask for a business plan? Those who are diligent in banking, PLN
and Pertamina have also made deposits,” he said yesterday (21/2/2020).

Erick said that the 142 companies would later be divided into 15 different
sub-holdings based on their respective business groups. This includes one
subholding for companies that are considered to be in the dead-weight category.

He said that his two deputy ministers would each hold 7 subholdings to
facilitate supervision of the 142 companies in BUMN.

“I want it to be finished, yes, each Deputy Minister holds 7 or more

they haven’t been completed yet. It’s still being mapped. Because it’s
impossible for each Deputy Minister, “including me overseeing 142 companies, not

A Slidell man was charged last Wednesday for making false statements to the
United States Small Business Administration. Dean Meilleur, 57 was accused of
submitting false writing and documents to the SBA and falsely represented
himself as the owner of a trucking business on his EIDL application and received
over $140,000 from the SBA. He can face up to five years in prison, three years
of supervised release, a $250,000 fine and a $100 mandatory special assessment
fee.
