Drugs are ubiquitous in modern medicine. They are used to treat disease, as well as for disease prevention and health maintenance, and constitute a significant part of Canada’s health budget. For the patient, drug therapy is often preferable to surgical intervention or hospitalization, and for many diseases represents the only effective mode of treatment. Despite the successes of modern drugs, there still exist therapeutic needs in most disease areas. These needs exist for many reasons: pathogens may become resistant, drug side effects may be severe, drug efficacy may be limited or no chemotherapeutic may be available at all. The modern pharmaceutical industry is working to fill these therapeutic needs, and requires trained scientists to find and develop the next generation of chemotherapeutics. This program is targeted to students who wish to enter the ethical pharmaceutical, generic pharmaceutical or biotechnology sectors. Our program is designed to provide our graduates with the same strong scientific training they have always enjoyed, enhanced by introducing new courses in industrially relevant areas such as process chemistry and drug development for clinical trials. We plan to offer these courses in collaboration with major Canadian pharmaceutical companies, to expose our graduates to material that is otherwise not available in a university setting, and at the same time allow them to observe how these companies operate. This should provide the opportunity to meet some of the key researchers in the Canadian pharmaceutical sector. The program has been designed to provide our graduates with a strong management background. These young scientists will be leaders in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors. Our program will provide them with the knowledge, understanding and tools to succeed and excel in an industry that is currently maturing. This part of the program of study is being developed in collaboration with the Telfer School of Management of the University of Ottawa. Last updated: 2011.03.22
