PART II

We sit with friends at the table. The talk is clever; everyone rises to it.

As we leave behind the early whisper of fall, teetering past the equinox,
nestling into the long breath of autumn, we find ourselves on the cusp of a
season of culmination. For many, that realization of months of work and
dedication hinges upon just a few fleeting weeks. In the case of devoted
runners, we are not exempt from this reality. For some of us, it can boil down
to a solitary race that will define our efforts. The harvest has truly begun.

Continuing to embrace the harvest season’s festivities this September, Lyndsay
Harper, Ruben Sança, Sam Roecker, and Jason Ayr headed to Vermont during some of
the first genuinely crisp autumn mornings for a weekend of marathon preparation.
Notably, Sam and Jason have their sights set on upcoming races that hold the
potential to secure their spots in the US Olympic Marathon trials taking place
in February, while Ruben eyes his second Olympics representing Cape Verde.

As the athletes begin to immerse themselves in an intensive training block,
setting their sights on upcoming races in Indianapolis and CIM, earnest and
focused efforts have arrived. Jason and Ruben waste little time getting to
business on Saturday morning, welcoming a challenging sunrise workout consisting
of 8 sets of 3-minute intervals at a half marathon pace, interspersed with 2
minutes of recovery. As the men take turns surging back and forth, an
undercurrent of friendly competition begins to surface. It's evident that both
men have their sights firmly fixed on competing at the CIM event in Sacramento
and are vying for similar times.

Meanwhile, the female athletes are presented with the juxtaposition of hard
effort against scenic serenity. Lyndsay and Sam are gifted with a majestic
sunset backdrop spanning a workout of 8 reps of 2 minutes at high intensity,
followed by 2 minutes of rolling recovery. The route holds three challenging
hills, where we witness Lyndsay briefly surge ahead, only to be caught by Sam,
who then takes the lead and increases the tempo on the uphill sections,
transitioning smoothly into the flats. After completing the workout, Sam extends
her run, recognizing the need to refine her marathon fitness in preparation for
the Indianapolis Marathon. As the sun grazes the corn stalks, engulfing the
evening in a golden hue, steam rolls off the athletes' shoulders, intermingling
with the last twinkle of light—a true testament to the pageantry of fall
running.
