DAILY UNIVERSAL REGISTER

BRIEFING

UK: BBC Question Time featuring Rishi Sunak, Sir Keir Starmer, Sir Ed Davey and
John Swinney.
World: Euro 2024: England v Denmark (5pm).

ON THIS DAY

In 1960 Nan Winton became the first woman to read the national news on BBC
television; in 1981 ska band the Specials released their single Ghost Town,
spending three weeks at No 1. After their Top of the Pops recording in July 1981
the band split, with three of its members going on to form the Fun Boy Three; in
1990 a ticker-tape parade in New York honoured Nelson Mandela at the start of a
tour of America; in 1990 John Major, as chancellor, proposed a European currency
unit called the “hard Ecu” to run alongside national currencies. Jacques
Delores, the European Commission president, had proposed a single currency, the
euro, which became legal tender on January 1, 1999; in 1997 US tobacco companies
agreed to significant regulatory concessions in exchange for limits to their
liability to compensate smokers.

NATURE NOTES

The indigo bunting had come a long way. To reach a back garden in Whitburn on
Sunderland’s Roker riviera, it had flown across the Atlantic. No mean feat for a
dumpy, sparrow-sized bird. With a breeding range stretching from northern
Florida up to southern Canada, it is thought that the bunting was blown to
Britain in last autumn’s storm. The species steers by the stars, so a cloudy
tempest would easily disorientate it. It is hard to imagine what that journey
must have been like. Perhaps, the bird was able to rest on shipping or a
floating island of plastic. Perhaps, it rode the gales on a nonstop
rollercoaster ride. As its name suggests, this bird is a beautiful shade of
blue. Jonathan Tulloch

What if the biggest threat isn’t climate change, the next pandemic, war or
nuclear apocalypse, but a lack of babies? “We are seeing the birth pangs of a
new epoch, but it’s an epoch without birth pangs,” writes the demographer Paul
