So, you can already assume I was devastated and heartbroken when he was killed in that horrific helicopter crash. I cried for hours and was in major denial that my idol was not an immortal being. My family and I are on our way to my cousin’s 12th birthday party. His dad, my uncle, is the offensive line varsity football coach at Bishop Amat high school, the same high school I would be attending that fall. As I walk into the house and say hello to my family, my uncle approaches me with a calm, reassuring grin on his face. “Manuel, I’ve been wanting to ask if you’re interested in creating edits for our football social media page” my uncle questioned. “No!” silently resounded in my head. “It would be a great way for us to showcase our players, and the team, and even get your name out there,” he continued. As he said this, a switch flipped in my head, almost like the sun shining through a gloomy gray forecast. I looked him dead in the eyes, squinted mine, and nodded my head up and down very slowly. Image Caption Thousands upon thousands of potential art designs began swirling inside my brain. He then pulled up his phone and started going through examples of things other sports teams have done in the past. I looked up at him and gave a reassuring smile. However, there was one problem. I had absolutely no idea how to create something of the quality of the examples he was showing me. I continued to look at his phone, then back at him, and finally gave a reassuring “Yes.” He then said thrillingly, “Cool!, I’ll send you pictures of the player we’ve been wanting to showcase to your email.” As he walked away an immediate sense of regret and a cloud of doubt hung over me. I thought to myself, “I don’t even know how to use photoshop correctly; how am I supposed to make art that people will want to see and enjoy?”. > I had been creating content for several years which led to this fantastic > opportunity. I hurried to my room, opened my computer, and went straight to YouTube. I had been creating content for several years which led to this fantastic opportunity. Over the last 4 years of being the graphic designer for the Bishop Amat football team, Youtube has become my best friend. I’ve created digital art inspired by famous athletes and artists such as Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Frank Ocean, and Mac Miller that have helped me reach a larger audience through the teachings of Youtube. My art even reached Kanye West, who followed my art page after seeing one of my designs of him. I don’t know how to make one color turn into another. Youtube. Having trouble re-creating an effect, I saw online? Youtube. I never once took any kind of class on Photoshop in order to learn it inside and out. Everything that I have ever learned in Photoshop has come from the Youtube search bar. As I search Youtube on how to cut out a player in the most effective way, I am filled with excitement for the potential art I can make. The cloud of doubt is overturned by the bright sun of excitement flowing through me. I open Photoshop, make a new file, and begin my passion for storytelling through digital media. Digital media has opened so many doors to different adventures. We started telling stories through other channels. Short films and podcasts. It allowed us to see the impact of storytelling. How it can change people’s perspectives and narrative. The more I learn, the more I can transfer a vision more effectively, and the more my passion for change through storytelling grows. selfgrowth 4 min read IT STARTS WITH MY NAME November 28, 2022 IT STARTS WITH MY NAME My name is Juan Manuel Chavez IV. I go by the name of Manuel, not Johnny, not Manny but Manuel. My parents started calling me Manuel as a tribute to my grandfather and great-grandfather, as they went by their middle name. A person’s name is important. Many times it is the first thing people know about you. Before your resume and list of accomplishments, they know your name. The IV tells people that three people with the same name preceded me, and I have a legacy to uphold. The way I spell my name tells people that I come from a Hispanic background, and in California, that usually means a Mexican background. > A person’s name is important. I never really thought about the significance of my name until I asked my dad why he went by the name Juan and why he named me such a Hispanic-sounding name even though we didn’t speak Spanish at home or have any Mexican flags hanging around our house like I had seen other Mexican-American families do. He told me a story that changed the way I saw my name and my purpose in life. He told me that when he was growing up, he asked my grandfather for a shirt that had Brown Pride on it. He asked my grandfather if they could also get a Mexican flag in their house. My grandfather asked my father for a reason behind the request. My father answered that he wanted to show people that he was proud of his Mexican heritage and Mexican roots. My grandfather’s answer changed not only the perspective of my father but of all of us that came after. My grandfather left a successful electrical appliance repair company he started in Mexico to come to America and give his family better opportunities. He started washing dishes at a restaurant, but he was a consummate student. He was always taking classes through mail order. He learned how to communicate in English, and more importantly, he became an electrical engineer. In eight short years, my grandfather went from dishwasher to lead electrical engineer and foreman at a broiler company called Spencer Broilers. Traveling the world, buying a home, and giving all his children college opportunities through sheer perverseness and belief in himself. When my father asked my grandfather for a shirt to show his Mexican pride, my grandfather looked at my father and answered, “You don’t need a shirt to show your Mexican pride. Everyone that looks at you or knows your name knows you are of Mexican descent. Strive to become a contributing member of society. Make it better than you found it. Become a professional like a physician, engineer, mayor, etc. So that people can see that Americans of Mexican descent can change the world. When you change the world as Juan Manuel Chavez III, everyone will see your Mexican pride.” My father took that advice and earned his Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Southern California. He not only instilled that lesson when he shared it, but he also instilled that lesson by example. I come from a long line of overachieving immigrants. My maternal great-grandmother left a teaching profession in Mexico to come to America to give her three children better opportunities, and she did it as a single mother. Both my grandparents refused to accept the narrative presented to them and asked themselves and the world, why not us? I learned that the strength and belief that ran through their veins also runs through mine. I owed it to them to have that same belief and maximize my opportunities. I know that when people see me, they think I can speak Spanish, play soccer, and maybe how uneducated I am. But I am here to break stereotypes and barriers. From the moment my grandparents and great-grandparents stepped across that border, I was meant to change the world, and it started with my name. Development | selfgrowth 2 min read INTERDISCIPLINARY LEARNING – THE NEW EDUCATION November 28, 2022 INTERDISCIPLINARY LEARNING – THE NEW EDUCATION Interdisciplinary learning: I don’t know if there is another way to tackle today’s biggest questions. The official definition is: students combine learning from multiple disciplines to come up with new ways to think about issues and solve problems. I equate it to thinking about the question first and being open to the different journeys as potential solutions. IB Theory of Knowledge reinforced the interdisciplinary approach to learning. It made me question what I knew and how I came to know it. Discussions and reflection encouraged me to look at what I thought I knew from different viewpoints. Image Caption To quote Aristotle, “It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.” I think this quote embodies interdisciplinary learning philosophy because it speaks to mental flexibility. We no longer live in a hierarchical world where information and knowledge move from top to bottom. Technology and the internet changed all of that. We live in an interconnected world where connection, understanding, and mental agility are the keys to solving the world’s biggest problems. According to David Epstein in his book Range, “the most successful problem solvers spend mental energy figuring out what type of problem they are facing before matching a strategy to it, rather than jumping in with memorized procedures.” The most successful experts belong to the broader world. > Interdisciplinary learning: I don’t know if there is another way to tackle > today’s biggest questions. Interdisciplinary learning would not only allow me to pursue the journey of solving problems from a holistic approach, but it would also support my personal growth journey.
