Altair DRIVING INNOVATION WHILE REMAINING TRUE TO THEIR ROOTS. Altair Named to Newsweek's Top 100 Most Loved Workplaces for Third Year in a Row. By Sponsored Content Team On 11/3/23 at 11:45 AM EDT Share Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on LinkedInShare on RedditShare on Flipboard Share via Email Comments Today, we're surrounded by technology that keeps us safe, more connected, and more productive—but most of the time, we may not even know it. Transformative technologies like simulation, artificial intelligence (AI), and high-performance computing (HPC) are woven into the fabric of our daily lives, from the cars we drive to the places we live. While these technologies may not always be at the forefront, they are creating a smarter, more sustainable future. Jim Scapa and his colleagues at Altair are helping drive that future, all while staying true to their roots, which has helped them succeed—and land on Newsweek's list of Top 100 Most Loved Workplaces in America three years in a row. Scapa, CEO and Chairman of the Board, founded Altair in Troy, Michigan, in 1985. Initially, the organization was an engineering consulting firm. Today, Altair is a global leader in some of the world's most cutting-edge technology, including HPC, simulation, data science, and AI. Since its founding nearly 40 years ago, Altair has grown from an organization of just a few people to more than 3,300 employees across 27 countries. And their client roster boasts some of the world's most prominent organizations, including the likes of General Motors, NVIDIA, Airbus, Cleveland Golf, and BMW, to name a few. Altair was founded in Troy, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. Today, the company has locations in 27 countries. Altair Balancing what's new with the tried-and-true Despite all the ways Altair has changed over the years—and the way the organization has driven change across the world—some core things have remained the same. "As Altair has grown up over the years, it might surprise people that I haven't changed the values that define our culture from the very beginning," says Scapa. "I've had pressure to, but I haven't changed those four key points in all these years." These four values—envisioning the future, communicating honestly and broadly, seeking technology and business "firsts," and embracing diversity and risk-taking—highlight what makes Altair both incredibly successful and well-loved by its employees, because they speak to a relentless drive for innovation while always staying true to the heart of the company: its people. Envisioning the future Thinking ahead and playing the long game has always helped Altair succeed. "We imagine a long future and always make decisions in that context," says Scapa. And that means more than just being on the cutting edge of technology. For one thing, it means sustainability—imagining a better future and working to find solutions that will make that future possible. Environmental sustainability is woven into Altair's DNA. Many of Altair's technologies have sustainability practices like lightweighting built in, which supports and enables its customers' sustainability goals. When Airbus wanted to reduce its carbon footprint, Altair software got them over the finish line. Altair's work advancing hydrogen technologies has been critical in the UK's effort to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by decarbonizing powertrains. Its technology allows electric vehicle companies to use digital twin modeling to reduce electronic system complexity, improve design accuracy, and increase cost savings, all of which continue to drive the entire electric vehicle industry forward and help to push the world toward a more sustainable future. Altair's emphasis on putting people first is evident in their retention rate. In an industry where turnover is notoriously high, Altair boasts a turnover rate of less than 12%. In addition, its workforce's average tenure is more than eight years, notable in an industry where it's not uncommon for people to leave a position after just one or two years. "Our people are our greatest asset," says Scapa. "People deserve to feel like they're supported, validated, and encouraged. In short, treated like the unique individuals they are." Communicating honestly and broadly Altair's focus on communication is another way it stays on the cutting edge, and another reason why its employees are so satisfied. "Information is power," says Scapa. "Broad communication spreads knowledge throughout the organization and empowers employees in their decision-making by providing the context in which they're making those decisions." Honest communication also means recognizing each person's ability to bring big ideas to the table and drive change, with entrepreneurial thinking being encouraged at all levels of the organization—up to and including sharing feedback and opinions with Scapa. "Even if people are pushing back on me about something, I love the energy they bring. It means they're passionate about what they're doing," he says. "Part of innovation is making sure people feel comfortable bringing their point of view and creating space for open discussion and dialogue." Seeking technology and business "firsts" For businesses to succeed—especially in the technology sector—they must always be striving for what's next. Altair is able to help their customers stay ahead of the game by providing them with cutting-edge technology "firsts." Altair established the simulation-driven design method—from generative design to manufacturing—which has transformed the product development lifecycle by reducing time to market and driving organizational innovation. Additionally, Altair pioneered a flexible, patented units-based licensing model, which has revolutionized how its customers use software by lowering barriers to adoption and creating broad engagement. "Embracing the democratization of technology and offering it in a seamless way shows our dedication and commitment to empowering our 13,000 customers with the solutions they need to compete effectively." Jim Scapa founded Altair in 1985, and he has served as CEO ever since. He's also Chairman of the Board of Directors. Altair Embracing diversity and risk-taking The diversity of Altair's tech offerings is only matched by the diversity of its staff—although Scapa acknowledges there are areas where they need to improve. In part, diversity is baked into the organization because of its broad footprint and its locations around the globe. "On my monthly leadership call we have people from China, Japan, India, Greece, Scotland, Germany, South Africa, Korea, and more," says Scapa. "And we're diverse throughout the enterprise, from senior positions all the way through. Diversity brings great power to our organization and having diverse perspectives makes us all better." Despite having offices around the world, Scapa has worked to promote its core values across the enterprise—while also recognizing regions, locations, countries, and groups will always have their own culture too. "When you arrive at the Altair offices in Germany, France, Japan, and elsewhere, you know you're in an Altair office, but each has its unique feel. Our country managers and leadership are always local to the regions they lead and I trust them to drive their office's success." While women make up 43% of Altair's CEO direct reports and board of directors, Scapa notes that, overall, there are fewer women than men in the organization. And maybe that's not surprising, considering women are underrepresented in STEM professions across the board. But as women continue to make gains in the field, and as Altair continues driving equality in hiring practices, the company strives to ensure that at least half of the candidates interviewed for open positions are women. Nearly 40 years of success Altair's work is unique. So is the fact that their values haven't changed. After nearly 40 years of business, these four founding principles have stood the test of time—and will guide the company for the next 40 years and beyond. "It's because we live and breathe it," says Scapa. "They're not just words on a wall. We live them. They are the lifeblood of how we work."
