Dress code standards have dropped so much in consulting that sometimes it's hard to take people seriously. Old wrinky casual shirts, messy hair, etc. (And not only junior consultants!) IMO first impressions still matter. Some can find it hard to trust the advice on multi million dollar decisions from people who look like they don't care. 194 Like 80 Comments Share Log in to comment 1. MCKINSEY & COMPANY 2 2mo I agree with Principal. I think we should start dressing up again. Disgusting, the kind of outfits some colleagues wear to client sites. I go with a tie and jacket at least for the initial meeting, and adjust based on the overall vibe Like Reply Share 7 MANAGER 8 4w I don’t think I’ve seen a tie in 10 years. And it was a consultant who was the overdressed on on his team. If I saw one now I’d think they’re out of touch Like Share 7. STRATEGY& 1 2mo Agree with OP. I’ve never had an issue with my teams, but I’d definitely have a conversation with staff if needed Like Reply Share 5 8. BAIN & COMPANY 1 2mo Yeah I agree. Some of the calls I'm on it's not just that they look like they don't care, it's that they don't wash... We're not talking about people not wearing suit & tie, we're talking about people wearing hoodies with yesterday's food stains on them... obviously not at Bain though, we all look great ;) Like Reply Share 10 9. SENIOR CONSULTANT 1 2mo Looks do matter. Bet everyone dishing on dress has a prestige marker... type of phone, smart watch, brand of tennis shoe, brand of backpack. You have just decided to delude yourself into thinking what you wear doesn't /shouldn't matter in a work setting. Try that next time you want to go out for a high-end dinner.....never mind the restaurant... just getting past your SO. PRODUCT MANAGER 1 2mo Haha I had the exact opposite issue when I was at MBB. Partners and engagement team consistently overdressed compared to the clients, didn't get the hint (I picked it up Day 1 and adjusted accordingly even though the rest of my team made snide comments) , and had to be forcibly told by senior stakeholder to ditch the ties and snobbiness. It goes both ways. Like Reply Share 16 View 3 more replies BOSTON CONSULTING GROUP 4 4w This sounds more specific than just MBB lol Like Share 11. MCKINSEY & COMPANY 4 2mo Yes it should matter. I saw interns show up day one with a wrinkled untucked polo and sneakers. Mind blowing. - not a boomer Like Reply Share 8 View 1 more reply SENIOR CONSULTANT 1 2mo in office and at client are different animals these days. In office matters less. , and big difference between casual and slovenly. And if you think it won't impact come promotion time, you're crazy. Like Share 7 12. MCKINSEY & COMPANY 5 2mo Agreed. I am 30, coming from tech (where I wore jeans and sweaters to work), and I am finding that many people here adopted a bit of the tech standards. We are advising clients on very serious matters - I want to give the impression that I am at the top of my game and in full professional mode through my clothes. We do have a dress code to match the highest ranking direct client (usually CEO or COO) but many people my age seem to not care. Like Reply Share 13 View 1 more reply SENIOR PRINCIPAL 1 4w I haven't seen a c-level client wear a tie in years. Even suits are rare now. It's all polos and collared shirts for the men. Like Share 13. CONSULTANT 1 2mo If we do it long enough then it becomes the new standard and nobody cares anymore Like Reply Share 5 CONSULTANT 2 4w Thank you for common sense! Like Share 14. BAIN & COMPANY 2 5w At Bain we don’t enforce a degree of professionalism with the dress code but we do have a drip-ometer. If your outfit isn’t fucking fire the drip-ometer goes off and you immediately get put on a diligence. BCG and McK do something similar but at BCG you get fired and McK frames you for a crime. BAIN & COMPANY 3 4w Professional dress code requirements are stupid and if your first impressions are based on that, you’re wrong Like Reply Share 2 SENIOR CONSULTANT 1 4w Try to convince me that you never in your life drawn an impression of a person by how they look when you first meet them. You may change it later, but that's how life works. First impressions are just that. First impressions and they are comprised of first inputs, auditory, visual, and olfactory. Like Share 1 19. ASSOCIATE PARTNER 1 4w It’s so weird to me to hear people say a nonsensical bias out loud, and then see it as the other party’s fault. Instead of saying “I realized today that how someone is dressed impacts how seriously I take their insights… jeez, I should work on that.” Like Reply Share 1 View 3 more replies BAIN & COMPANY 4 4w I would apply the logic of pronouns here. The idea of pronouns is to remove barriers to people engaging with you fully. That is the same logic as wearing business clothing.
