1. We have achieved our 250-hamper goal!

The Elves have hustled for donations, comparison shopped, placed massive bulk
orders, and planned to make this our best party ever (we say that every year…and
it just keeps getting more awesome!). Thanks to your generous donations we have
the supplies to fill 250 hampers this year. Thank you SO MUCH!

Working closely with the Salvation Army, we identified the sizes of families
requesting hampers this year and are building different sized hampers
accordingly. They include seniors and the disabled, single parents, and

had to request a hamper before. Every beautiful hamper we fill shows someone in
need that we care and that they are not alone. This year’s plan is:

– 50 2 person
– 70 3-4 person
– 21 5-6 person
– 3    7+

2. What we need by Dec 12
3. Local business with BIG hearts
4. Livestream video link on the day
5. Who’s getting our hampers
6. Live entertainment

1. We are SO close to reaching our 250 hamper goal !

In spite of unprecedented food prices, generous Hamper Party people and
businesses are rising to the challenge. Though they may be watching their own
spending, they’re donating as much, sometimes more, than in previous years,
recognizing that there are those who aren’t just lacking wholesome fresh
food—they’re lacking food…period.
The Elves have hustled for donations, comparison shopped, placed massive bulk
orders, and planned and schemed to make this our best party ever. We are over
2/3 of the way to our financial goal and just need that final wave of donations
to fill 250 hampers in spite of inflation!

2. We need to hear from you ASAP!

If you haven’t donated yet, please do so by December 12.  If you’ve already
donated, invite a friend who might also want to contribute. Having a broad base
of support is what’s kept the party going for over 20 years and insures we’ll
still be there for those in need in the future.  People really do want to help
their less fortunate neighbours. Show them our party website:
https://christmashamperparty.org

Here’s how you can donate:

Donate cash before Dec 12 to support bulk purchasing. Interac e-transfer to
christmashamperparty@gmail.com. Include your name and address so we can send you
a tax receipt (if $20+). See the menu Donate above for more info. Send a note to
our email if you are not able to e-transfer.

3. Wow! Look at the astounding generosity of our local business donors so far:

Coca Cola: 250 1L Coke and Ginger Ale
Fairway Markets: 600 reusable grocery bags, tea and a 5% discount on the gift
cards
The Old Farm Market: 300 lbs of oranges
Irene’s Bakery: 260 loaves of Bread
Fernwood Dental: 500 tubes of toothpaste
Level Ground: 140 lbs of coffee
Portofino Bakery and Irene’s Bakery: 260 loaves of bread
Cassels Murray Law: $1500 (that buys a lot of Xmas treats!)
Peppers with nearly 200 lbs of Veg
Root Cellar: 500 lbs of onions
Island Eggs 150 dozen eggs and the rest at cost

4. Want to follow the fun online?  LIVESTREAM LINK: Facebook > Videos

Join us! Thanks to Elf Paul and Photographer Elf James Mitchell, we’ll
be livestreaming the party on our Facebook page both Friday and Saturday.

5. Who’s getting our hampers?

The Salvation Army has given us a breakdown of the sizes of families requesting
our hampers this year. They include seniors and the disabled, single parents,
and families ranging from 3-7 members, all struggling to make ends meet. Many
have never had to request a hamper before. Every beautiful hamper we fill shows
someone in need that we care and that they are not alone. We’ve always decorated
our hampers to feel like gifts, not handouts. Now we’re going even further!

6. Live Entertainment

Once again this year, puppeteer Tim Gosley, fiddler Marjorie Cullerne and
keyboardist Ann Shau will spread holiday cheer with free live music and puppetry
for people picking up their hamper.

Please join us in sharing our good fortune with those who so desperately need
our help.

If you know someone who needs a hamper, have them register online:

– Households with adults only

2023 CHRISTMAS HAMPER PARTY VICTORIA IS LESS THAN ONE MONTH AWAY!

Posted on November 20, 2023 by Paul MacDonald

Save these Dates:

Friday, December 15 – 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. – Set up and prepare non-perishables
Saturday, December 16 – 09:00 -1:00p.m. – Build and Decorate the Christmas
Hampers
Deliveries from 11:00 – 2:00 p.m.

Same Location as Last Year
High Point Community Church
949 Fullerton Ave V9A 3Z9, in Vic West [Map}

Over the past 20+ years, our heartwarming annual tradition has evolved and grown
in response to the ever-increasing hunger in our community.

Last year we had a record 216 Hampers. The need is even greater this year.
Our goal this year is 250!!

We will have music and family entertainment in the Christmas spirit again this
year!

Music and a show for the children – of all ages

We have a few changes this year. These are things that we tried last year, and
they worked very well.

Here’s this year’s plan! – over two (2) days:

On Friday night we will gather and set up the hall for the main event. We will
also be organizing all the non-perishable food items.

On Saturday we will be assembling and decorating the food hampers. We will need
teams of people for this event, and we will need a team to manage the recycling
as we go. This year we will have a new team to deliver hampers to those who are
unable to pick them up.

The sign up for these is on the Potluck page of the invitation that you
received. If you did not receive an invitation, please email us
christmashamperparty@gmail.com and we will send you one.

On both days we recommend that you wear masks, and we provide a sanitation
station.

How can you help?

BULK PURCHASING IS WHAT MAKES IT WORK

We used to have people bring all the actual fresh food items for our hampers but
found we can create 5x more hampers by doing bulk purchasing. Donations and
hamper-building are now the main attractions! Of course, we know that some
people really enjoy the tradition of donating food and that will always be
welcomed and appreciated.

DONATIONS:

Instant Donations: Please e-transfer donations to christmashamperparty@gmail.com
and remember to Include your name and postal address if you would like a tax
receipt for donations of $20 or more.

Cash Donations: The address for delivering and/or mailing cash/cheques prior to
the party is 1970 Newton St, Victoria BC V8R 2R6. Thank you!

We are so excited to be directly partnered with the Salvation Army. So many less
fortunate people have their lives brightened up through them – especially at
Christmas.

2022 CHRISTMAS HAMPER PARTY – FINAL REPORT

Posted on December 18, 2022 by joycekline

Best. Hamper Party. Ever!

Record high grocery costs couldn’t stop us from breaking our record. Final
count?  216 insanely overstuffed hampers, plus some exciting new additions.
Here’s your blow-by-blow account of the best party ever!

It was “The Year of Bespoke Hampers.”

Now that our venue is High Point Community Church— a Salvation Army distribution
centre—we’re working closely with its wonderful young pastors Kassie and Josh
Cain. They let us know, in advance, the exact size of each family needing a
hamper. Armed with this information, Elves James van Dam and Paul MacDonald made
detailed spread sheets to determine the exact quantity needed for each item on
our grocery list, fine tuning our bulk orders.

Once again, we gave people either two or three large re-useable cloth bags
instead of a plastic laundry hamper. We were able to do this because, instead of
turkeys, each recipient received a $25 gift card to purchase the protein of
their choice. (Like I said, bespoke!) Fairway donated 400 cloth bags, so not
only did we save over $1400 in hamper costs; bags were much easier for people to
carry home. With avian flu raging, we wouldn’t have been able to secure over 200
turkeys, anyway!

An army of Elves mobilized to prepare.

Elf Dan Doherty experimented with workflow and packing methods to make sure we
had the best possible system for fitting all menu items into bags without
squishing a slice of bread or chipping a pie crust. Paul and Dan managed our
mailouts and updated the website.

As donations poured in, Banker Elf Laura MacDonald kept track of charitable
donations and what budget we’d have available for bulk orders. Décor Elf Di
Madill and her team prepared hamper decorations to be wired onto fresh cedar
boughs on party day. Elf Lisa Paquin ran errands and generally picked up the
slack, and Elf Val Sharp, thankfully, took on Facebook posts. Printmaker Susan
Underwood designed adorable hamper tags to indicate family size.

Fun surprises for folks picking up hampers.

For years, Joyce had dreamed of having festive entertainment for people as they
signed in with the Salvation Army to receive their hamper. This year we finally
did it: there were candy canes and Elf Rhona McAdam’s yummy homemade cookies
along with the Sally Ann’s hot chocolate. Onstage, Tim Gosley’s adorable puppets
cavorted inside a sweet little puppet theatre, singing along to Ann Schau’s
keyboards and Marjorie Cullerne’s fiddle. (The latter back at it after
entertaining volunteers the night before.) It wasn’t just kids who enjoyed the
show—one grown up said he’d never seen a puppet show before!

Icing on the cake? We raised enough money to take advantage of a special deal
Fairway offered us on syrup and pancake mix, so we added a holiday breakfast to
each hamper! (This was in addition to milk, eggs, 1-2 loaves of bread, real
butter, coffee, tea, cranberry sauce, stuffing mix, carrots, onions, potatoes,
broccoli, fresh fruit, a pie or butter tarts, coke, holiday treats and   gift
card for a protein of choice.)

Who got our hampers?

Single hampers typically went to low income disabled, socially isolated, often
elderly or mobility challenged, recipients. (The Salvation Army was thrilled
that our volunteers now took on delivering hampers to these homes.) Next were
2-3 person families, often single moms. There were new immigrants (many from
Ukraine or Afghanistan) trying to establish themselves, and families of four or
more, including one family of seven.

Because we helped with distribution, we saw firsthand how thrilled people were
to get desperately needed food aid. There were people who had been laid off the
week before Christmas, faced eviction or had absolutely no food at all in their
home. They arrived expecting to receive a few items; you could actually see
their spirits lift when they saw all the quality food they were receiving, so
caringly decorated. Those smiles spoke volumes.

The angels who made it all possible.

In spite of inflation, people really dug deep. Personal contributions ranged
from a few food items to $1000, but we never reveal individual donation amounts.
We know everyone gives to the best of their ability. We do, however, want to
acknowledge the incredible generosity of the businesses who gave above and
beyond the call this year. We couldn’t have fed so many people without them!
So, thank you from the bottom of our hearts to the following donors. We hope
you’ll patronize these wonderful community supporters.

 * Cassels Murray Family Law
 * Coca Cola
 * Fairway Markets
 * Fernwood Dental
 * Irene’s Bakery
 * Island Gold Eggs
 * Level Ground
 * London Drugs on Yates
 * Portofino Bakery
 * Root Cellar
 * Thrifty Foods, Cloverdale
 * Victory Barber & Brand

Feast away this holiday season knowing you helped others do the same. Happy
holidays to you all. See you in 2023!

A big THANK YOU! from the Organizing Elves: Dan, Paul, Laura, Jacob (back),
Joyce (front), Lisa, James V. Not in photo: Val, James M, Di & the decoration
team…

THE FINAL COUNT FOR 2021

Posted on December 18, 2021 by joycekline
Reply

Neither wind, nor rain, nor supply chain disruption and Omicron could stop
Christmas Hamper Party from providing the Salvation Army with—drumroll,
please!—201 hampers, plus cases and cases of additional veggies and 500 paper
bags for their food bank.

So much this year was new…

We had a lot to figure out: layout for our new venue at High Point Community
Church, how to coordinate filling two shopping bags instead of a single hamper,
and how to divide the work into two sessions to maintain Covid-safe numbers.
Only hours before party time we decided we should try to get by with even fewer
volunteers, mostly families who shared a bubble, and asked single volunteers if
they would stay home.  This was a tough decision and we’re grateful everyone was
so understanding.

In the end, challenges created innovations that turned out to be improvements.
Two bags were easier for recipients to carry and gift cards were a heck of a lot
lighter than turkeys!

Friday night was all about the prep.

Our Friday night volunteers set to work getting us ready for Saturday’s big
event.  To Marjorie Cullerne and Ian Johnson’s lively music, workers bagged more
than 520 pounds of bulk carrots, 630 pounds of potatoes, 600 onions, 1200
oranges, 3000 tea bags, and 100 pounds of fragrant Level Ground coffee.  We knew
we’d have to be as prepared as possible for packing the perishables next day,
because it actually takes a surprising amount of time just to open that many
cases of stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, pies, treats, packaged cookies…and then
there’s flattening all that cardboard for recycling.

Saturday we added perishables…and more.

Now it was time to open icy crates of emerald green broccoli and bag up over 400
pounds of it!  The amount of food was staggering: the root veggies we’d bagged
and the hundreds of boxed pies, cookies and stuffing mix we’d stacked the night
before—plus 200 cartons of eggs, 400 litres of milk, 210 pounds of butter and a
mountain of bread loaves higher than this vertically challenged Elf’s head!

Elf Dan had worked out a floor plan for the tables so that people could pick up
the heaviest items in each bag first and proceed down the line adding lighter
items last.  The big question was “With our new two bag system, how do we most
efficiently make sure each recipient has everything they need?”  After a wee bit
of experimentation, all systems were “go” and our well-oiled hamper party
machine went into action.

At one end of the room—armed with tongs to make sure we all stayed Covid
safe—Elf Rhona presided over homemade cookies and drinks.  At the other,
Marjorie played Christmas tunes on her violin.  In between, James Mitchell, who
set up our livestream, took photos as workers moved down the line collecting
items for both bags before hauling them to the next room to be crowned with
fresh cedar decorations courtesy of Elf Di’s décor team.

At last the finished hampers were ready!

To preserve recipient privacy, we don’t give out hampers ourselves, but when we
imagined how difficult it might be for some people to ask for food aid, we
couldn’t resist budgeting for an extra Hamper Party touch.  As each recipient
picked up their hamper, along with their bulging bags of goodies and a $25
Fairway gift card, they also got a little chocolate Santa.

Here’s how your donation was spent.

We were overwhelmed by the donations we received.  Normally, we don’t reveal the
names of individual donors, but how can we resist a shout out to 9-year-old
Janner who wasn’t able to attend this year and instead donated his allowance
savings?

The final results of this year’s party?  Thanks to your generosity and that of
our incredible business donors, for $11,400 we donated 201 hampers plus tons of
extra veggies. That’s just $56.61 per hamper!

Business Donors We hope you’ll support the business donors who so wholeheartedly
supported us:

Level Ground Trading
Fairway Markets
Root Cellar
Coca Cola
Cassels Murray Family & Estate Law
Island Eggs
Victoria Box & Paper
Homesold Real Estate
Canadian College of Natural Nutrition V.I.

Next year all our troubles will be miles away…
We deeply missed our piper Josh MacDonald’s bagpipes this year but, alas, turns
out bagpipes are a potentially comfy home for Covid viruses.  Josh can’t regale
us, but here’s a one-minute bagpipe Christmas carol medley to end this year’s
party:

The Elves and I wish you peaceful, safe holidays and a fantastic new year.
Fingers crossed we will be able to see all of you, in person and unmasked, next

WE’RE ON TRACK TO FILL 200 HAMPERS!

You can always count on generous Hamper Party supporters to step up to the
plate!  The Elves and I are holding our breath because it looks like this could
be the year we realize our long-held dream of filling 200 hampers with
everything a food insecure family needs to enjoy a fresh, wholesome, holiday
feast.

THERE’S SO MUCH HIDDEN HUNGER…

Last month the Salvation Army’s Pat Humble told CTV News that the demand for
hampers is up a shocking 300% this year.  With so much hidden hunger in our
city, food banks can rarely provide fresh fruit and vegetables.  We know that
families are thrilled when they receive our gift of fresh coffee, oranges, fresh
veggies, milk, eggs and butter.  It’s not unusual for the treats and decorations
we include in our hampers to be the only gifts they will receive.  Every hamper
we fill lets a needy family know that someone cares about them and that they are
not alone.

Please join us in sharing our good fortune with those who so desperately need
our help.

If you can’t be physically present at the party, join us virtually!  View the

HAMPER PARTY PEOPLE! HERE ARE DETAILS OF THE EXCITING CHANGES WE’VE GOT PLANNED!

2021 CHRISTMAS HAMPER PARTY!

Fri, Dec 17 – 7-9 p.m. — bag non-perishables
Sat, Dec 18 – 10 a.m.-1 p.m. — build the hampers

NEW LOCATION
High Point Community Church
949 Fullerton Ave V9A 3Z9, in Vic West

Over the past 20+ years, our heartwarming annual tradition has evolved and grown
in response to the ever-increasing hunger in our community. This year we’re
tweaking what’s worked in the past to create a COVID-19 safe event that will be
impacted less by supply chain disruptions due to the recent flooding of BC
farms.

Here’s this year’s plan! – 2 shifts of 30 people:
Thank you Volunteers!
A few spaces are still available for Friday evening.
Saturday shifts are filled!!

SHIFT OPTION 1. Fri, Dec 17 — 7-9 a.m. — bag non-perishable items,
SHIFT OPTION 2. Sat, Dec 18 — 10 a.m.-1 p.m. — pack the fresh produce into the
hampers

On both days we will verify vaccine passports, require masks, and provide a
sanitation station.

When you receive your Punchbowl invitation email, check the Potluck page.

This is where you can sign up for ONE of the two volunteer shifts listed above,
and indicate what you want to bring. To donate money go to Contribute on the
list of To Do Items, or Interac e-transfer cash to
christmashamperparty@gmail.com

NOTE: your tax deductible financial donations increase our bulk purchasing
power.

On Saturday, we’ll have live entertainment for people picking up their hampers,
courtesy of violinist Marjorie Cullerne and puppeteer Tim Gosley.

We are compensating for the sudden rise in food prices.

A hamper with a turkey, bread, butter, milk, eggs, coffee, tea, cranberry sauce,
stuffing mix, dessert items and treats costs about $75. For the cost of a
restaurant dinner for two, you can bask in the glow of knowing that your
donation feeds an entire family!

With so many in urgent need, and the uncertainty around obtaining bulk orders
due to the flooding of the lower mainland turkey farms, most hampers will
include a $25 gift card so that families can purchase the main course item of
their choice.

We are grateful to have the Victoria Christmas Hamper Party back again, adapting
as always to feed as many of our less fortunate neighbours as possible.  Your
generosity warms and lights up the season, and we can’t wait to see you at the
2021 Christmas Hamper Party!

Our hampers are distributed by the Salvation Army. If you know someone who needs
a hamper, have them register online or call to sign up for support: Salvation
Army, Mustard Seed and other food banks.

2021 CHRISTMAS HAMPER PARTY – WE ARE BACK! – SAVE THE DATE AND WE HAVE BIG NEWS!

Saturday, December the 18th from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M.

At our New Location

High Point Community Church in Vic West,

949 Fullerton Ave

High Point Community Church in Vic West, 949 Fullerton Ave

A bountiful hamper is ready for shipping.

We are super excited to announce that because the Salvation Army is expanding
their hamper distribution system to include Esquimalt and Saanich locations,
they are able to give us High Point Community Church as this year’s party
venue.  This means that…

Families will be able to pick up their hampers directly from the party!

There will be no need for refrigeration, the Salvation Army won’t have to
arrange trucks and, since we always place a massive bulk order with Wholesale
Club close by, we’ll be saving backs, too.  All our hampers will go straight to
the needy in Victoria and Esquimalt.

This is an opportunity for us to spread even more holiday spirit!

Along with our usual holiday music, we’re hoping to provide treats—not just for
our workers, but for those picking up their hampers, as well.  Just think what
fun that will be for all of us!

We’re going for 200 hampers!

In 2019 we donated 179 hampers and last year we raised an impressive $10,350 in
cash for Santas Anonymous, but we couldn’t appeal to the generous in-kind
business donors who normally support us.  By soliciting business donors,
comparison shopping, and buying in bulk we can actually stretch donations
further creating hampers than we can by raising money to buy grocery gift cards.
 So…

Our goal is to raise $15,000 in cash and food donations

let us fill those clean new hampers with nutritious fresh food, lovingly
decorated.  We’ve already got the first $1300—now let’s raise the rest for the
most inspiring holiday party ever!

(*And don’t worry; robust COVID-19 protocols will be in place!)

See you at the party!

Doherty, Val Sharp and Diane Madill
