A pathogen is defined as an organism causing disease to its host, with the
severity of the disease symptoms referred to as virulence. Pathogens are
taxonomically widely diverse and comprise viruses and bacteria as well as
unicellular and multicellular eukaryotes. Every living organism is affected by
pathogens, including bacteria, which are targeted by specialized viruses called
phages.

The number of viruses and bacteria on earth is staggering and they occupy
essentially every environment. A liter of surface seawater typically contains in
excess of ten billion bacteria and 100 billion viruses. The number of viruses on
Earth is estimated to be around 1031, which corresponds to roughly ten billion
times the number of stars in the universe [1]. An average human is made up of
about 30 trillion cells but carries a similar number of bacteria, mostly in the
gut [2].

The vast majority of viruses and bacteria we are exposed to have no negative
effect and some can even be beneficial, though a tiny fraction of these can
severely affect our health. Specifically, about one in a billion microbial
species is a human pathogen. Indeed, approximately 1400 human pathogens have
been described, whereas it has been estimated that there are one trillion
microbial species on Earth, the vast majority of which remain uncharacterized.

WHAT IS THE ECS (ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM)?

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a widespread neuromodulatory system that
plays important roles in central nervous system (CNS) development, synaptic
plasticity, and the response to endogenous and environmental insults. The ECS is
comprised of cannabinoid receptors, endogenous cannabinoids (endocannabinoids),
and the enzymes responsible for the synthesis and degradation of the
endocannabinoids. The most abundant cannabinoid receptor is the CB1 cannabinoid
receptors, however CB2 cannabinoid receptors, transient receptor potential (TRP)
channels, and peroxisome proliferator activated receptors (PPAR’s) are also
engaged by some cannabinoids. Exogenous cannabinoids, such as
tetrahydrocannabinol, produce their biological effects through their
interactions with cannabinoid receptors. 2-arachidonoyl glycerol (2-AG) and
arachidonoyl ethanolamide (anandamide) are the best-studied endogenous
cannabinoids. Despite similarities in chemical structure, 2-AG and anandamide
are synthesized and degraded by distinct enzymatic pathways, which impart
fundamentally different physiological and pathophysiological roles to these two
endocannabinoids. Because of the pervasive social use of cannabis and the
involvement of endocannabinoids in a multitude of biological processes, much has
been learned about the physiological and pathophysiological roles of the ECS.

WHAT ARE CANNABINOIDS?

Cannabinoids (/kəˈnæbənɔɪdzˌ ˈkænəbənɔɪdz/) are several structural classes of
compounds found in the cannabis plant primarily and most animal organisms
(although insects lack such receptors) or as synthetic compounds. The most
notable cannabinoid is the phytocannabinoid tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)
(delta-9-THC), the primary intoxicating compound in cannabis. Cannabidiol (CBD)
is a major constituent of temperate Cannabis plants and a minor constituent in
tropical varieties. At least 113 distinct phytocannabinoids have been isolated
from cannabis, although only four (i.e., THCA, CBDA, CBCA and their common
precursor CBGA) have been demonstrated to have a biogenetic origin. It was
reported in 2020 that phytocannabinoids can be found in other plants such as
rhododendron, licorice and liverwort, and earlier in Echinacea.

WHAT IS CBD (CANNABIDIOL)?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a phytocannabinoid discovered in 1940. It is one of 113
identified cannabinoids in cannabis plants, along with tetrahydrocannabinol
(THC), and accounts for up to 40% of the plant's extract. As of 2019, clinical
research on CBD included studies related to anxiety, cognition, movement
disorders, and pain, but there is insufficient high-quality evidence that
cannabidiol is effective for these conditions. Nevertheless, CBD is an herbal
dietary supplement promoted with unproven claims of particular therapeutic
effects.

WHAT IS CBDA (CANNABIDIOLIC ACID?

Cannabidiolic acid (CBDA), is a cannabinoid found in cannabis plants.[1] It is
most abundant in the glandular trichomes on the female seedless flowers or more
accurately infructescence often colloquially referred to as buds.[2] CBDA is the
chemical precursor to cannabidiol (CBD). Through the process of decarboxylation
cannabidiol is derived via a loss of a carbon and two oxygen atoms from the 1
position of the benzoic acid ring. Cannabinoids are a class of compounds that
are essentially unique to the cannabis genus. Both marijuana and hemp belong to
this genus.

WHAT IS CBG (CANNABIGEROL)?

Cannabigerol (CBG) is one of more than 120 identified cannabinoid compounds
found in the plant genus Cannabis. Cannabigerol is the decarboxylated form of
cannabigerolic acid, the parent molecule from which other cannabinoids are
synthesized.

Cannabigerol is normally a minor constituent of cannabis. During plant growth,
most of the cannabigerol is converted into other cannabinoids, primarily
tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) or cannabidiol (CBD), leaving about 1% cannabigerol
in the plant.[6] Some strains, however, produce larger amounts of cannabigerol
and cannabigerolic acid, while having low quantities of other cannabinoids, like
THC and CBD.

Although cannabigerol is sold as a dietary supplement, its effects and safety
for human consumption are undefined.

WHAT IS CBGA (CANNABIGEROL ACID)?

Cannabigerolic acid (CBGA) is the acidic form of cannabigerol (CBG). It is a
dihydroxybenzoic acid and olivetolic acid in which the hydrogen at position 3 is
substituted by a geranyl group. It is a biosynthetic precursor to
Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, which is the principal psychoactive constituent of
the Cannabis plant. It is also a diterpenoid, a polyketide, a member of
resorcinols and a phytocannabinoid. It derives from an olivetolic acid. It is a
conjugate acid of a cannabigerolate.

In the Cannabis plant, olivetolic acid and geranyl diphosphate are synthesized
into CBGA. CBGA is converted in the plant by CBCA synthase, CBDA synthase and
THCA synthase into CBCA, CBDA and THCA respectively. Afterwards, THCA and CBDA
can be decarboxylated into THC and CBD by drying and heating plant material.
CBGA has emerging pharmacological properties; for example, it had anticonvulsant
effects in a mouse model of Dravet syndrome, a form of epilepsy.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a part of the U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services, is the nation’s medical research agency — making important
discoveries that improve health and save lives. The National Institutes of
Health, commonly referred to as NIH (initialism), is the primary agency of the
United States government responsible for biomedical and public health research.
It was founded in the late 1880s and is now part of the United States Department
of Health and Human Services. Many NIH facilities are located in Bethesda,
Maryland, and other nearby suburbs of the Washington metropolitan area, with
other primary facilities in the Research Triangle Park in North Carolina and
smaller satellite facilities located around the United States. The NIH conducts
its own scientific research through the NIH Intramural Research Program (IRP)
and provides major biomedical research funding to non-NIH research facilities
through its Extramural Research Program.

As of 2013, the IRP had 1,200 principal investigators and more than 4,000
postdoctoral fellows in basic, translational, and clinical research, being the
largest biomedical research institution in the world, while, as of 2003, the

CANNABINOIDS BLOCK CELLULAR ENTRY OF SARS-COV-2 AND THE EMERGING VARIANTS

Abstract
As a complement to vaccines, small-molecule therapeutic agents are needed to
treat or prevent infections by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2
(SARS-CoV-2) and its variants, which cause COVID-19. Affinity selection-mass
spectrometry was used for the discovery of botanical ligands to the SARS-CoV-2
spike protein. Cannabinoid acids from hemp (Cannabis sativa) were found to be
allosteric as well as orthosteric ligands with micromolar affinity for the spike
protein. In follow-up virus neutralization assays, cannabigerolic acid and
cannabidiolic acid prevented infection of human epithelial cells by a
pseudovirus expressing the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and prevented entry of live
SARS-CoV-2 into cells. Importantly, cannabigerolic acid and cannabidiolic acid
were equally effective against the SARS-CoV-2 alpha variant B.1.1.7 and the beta
variant B.1.351. Orally bioavailable and with a long history of safe human use,
these cannabinoids, isolated or in hemp extracts, have the potential to prevent
as well as treat infection by SARS-CoV-2.

IMMUNITY: PLANTS AS EFFECTIVE MEDIATORS

Abstract
In the domain of nutrition, exploring the diet-health linkages is major area of
research. The outcomes of such interventions led to widespread acceptance of
functional and nutraceutical foods; however, augmenting immunity is a major
concern of dietary regimens. Indeed, the immune system is incredible arrangement
of specific organs and cells that enabled humans to carry out defense against
undesired responses. Its proper functionality is essential to maintain the body
homeostasis. Array of plants and their components hold immunomodulating
properties. Their possible inclusion in diets could explore new therapeutic
avenues to enhanced immunity against diseases. The review intended to highlight
the importance of garlic (Allium sativum), green tea (Camellia sinensis), ginger
(Zingiber officinale), purple coneflower (Echinacea), black cumin (Nigella
sativa), licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra), Astragalus and St. John's wort
(Hypericum perforatum) as natural immune boosters. These plants are bestowed
with functional ingredients that may provide protection against various menaces.
Modes of their actions include boosting and functioning of immune system,
activation and suppression of immune specialized cells, interfering in several
pathways that eventually led to improvement in immune responses and defense
system. In addition, some of these plants carry free radical scavenging and
anti-inflammatory activities that are helpful against cancer insurgence.
Nevertheless, interaction between drugs and herbs/botanicals should be well
investigated before recommended for their safe use, and such information must be
disseminated to the allied stakeholders.

THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM: ROLE IN ENERGY REGULATION

Abstract
Cannabis sativa has been used since antiquity to treat many ailments, including
eating disorders. The primary psychoactive constituent of this plant,
Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is an FDA approved medication to treat nausea and
emesis caused by cancer chemotherapeutic agents as well as to stimulate appetite
in AIDS patients suffering from cachexia. The effects of THC are mediated
through the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which promotes a positive energy
balance through stimulation of appetite as well as shifting homeostatic
mechanisms toward energy storage. Here we discuss the physiological function of
the ECS in energy balance and the therapeutic potential of targeting this
system.

VITAMIN C

FACT SHEET FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONALS

Introduction
Vitamin C, also known as L-ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin that is
naturally present in some foods, added to others, and available as a dietary
supplement. Humans, unlike most animals, are unable to synthesize vitamin C
endogenously, so it is an essential dietary component.

Vitamin C is required for the biosynthesis of collagen, L-carnitine, and certain
neurotransmitters; vitamin C is also involved in protein metabolism. Collagen is
an essential component of connective tissue, which plays a vital role in wound
healing. Vitamin C is also an important physiological antioxidant and has been
shown to regenerate other antioxidants within the body, including
alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E). Ongoing research is examining whether vitamin C,
by limiting the damaging effects of free radicals through its antioxidant
activity, might help prevent or delay the development of certain cancers,
cardiovascular disease, and other diseases in which oxidative stress plays a
causal role. In addition to its biosynthetic and antioxidant functions, vitamin
C plays an important role in immune function and improves the absorption of
nonheme iron, the form of iron present in plant-based foods. Insufficient
vitamin C intake causes scurvy, which is characterized by fatigue or lassitude,
widespread connective tissue weakness, and capillary fragility.

The intestinal absorption of vitamin C is regulated by at least one specific
dose-dependent, active transporter. Cells accumulate vitamin C via a second
specific transport protein. In vitro studies have found that oxidized vitamin C,
or dehydroascorbic acid, enters cells via some facilitated glucose transporters
and is then reduced internally to ascorbic acid. The physiologic importance of
dehydroascorbic acid uptake and its contribution to overall vitamin C economy is
unknown.

Oral vitamin C produces tissue and plasma concentrations that the body tightly
controls. Approximately 70%–90% of vitamin C is absorbed at moderate intakes of
30–180 mg/day. However, at doses above 1 g/day, absorption falls to less than
50% and absorbed, unmetabolized ascorbic acid is excreted in the urine. Results
from pharmacokinetic studies indicate that oral doses of 1.25 g/day ascorbic
acid produce mean peak plasma vitamin C concentrations of 135 micromol/L, which
are about two times higher than those produced by consuming 200–300 mg/day
ascorbic acid from vitamin C-rich foods [10]. Pharmacokinetic modeling predicts
that even doses as high as 3 g ascorbic acid taken every 4 hours would produce
peak plasma concentrations of only 220 micromol/L.

The total body content of vitamin C ranges from 300 mg (at near scurvy) to about
2 g. High levels of vitamin C (millimolar concentrations) are maintained in
cells and tissues, and are highest in leukocytes (white blood cells), eyes,
adrenal glands, pituitary gland, and brain. Relatively low levels of vitamin C
(micromolar concentrations) are found in extracellular fluids, such as plasma,
red blood cells, and saliva.

TURMERIC (CURCUMIN)

THERAPEUTIC ROLES OF CURCUMIN: LESSONS LEARNED FROM CLINICAL TRIALS

Abstract
Extensive research over the past half century has shown that curcumin
(diferuloylmethane), a component of the golden spice turmeric (Curcuma longa),
can modulate multiple cell signaling pathways. Extensive clinical trials over
the past quarter century have addressed the pharmacokinetics, safety, and
efficacy of this nutraceutical against numerous diseases in humans. Some
promising effects have been observed in patients with various pro-inflammatory
diseases including cancer, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, uveitis,
ulcerative proctitis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel
disease, tropical pancreatitis, peptic ulcer, gastric ulcer, idiopathic orbital
inflammatory pseudotumor, oral lichen planus, gastric inflammation, vitiligo,
psoriasis, acute coronary syndrome, atherosclerosis, diabetes, diabetic
nephropathy, diabetic microangiopathy, lupus nephritis, renal conditions,
acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, β-thalassemia, biliary dyskinesia,
Dejerine-Sottas disease, cholecystitis, and chronic bacterial prostatitis.
Curcumin has also shown protection against hepatic conditions, chronic arsenic
exposure, and alcohol intoxication. Dose-escalating studies have indicated the
safety of curcumin at doses as high as 12 g/day over 3 months. Curcumin’s
pleiotropic activities emanate from its ability to modulate numerous signaling
molecules such as pro-inflammatory cytokines, apoptotic proteins, NF–κB,
cyclooxygenase-2, 5-LOX, STAT3, C-reactive protein, prostaglandin E2,
prostate-specific antigen, adhesion molecules, phosphorylase kinase,
transforming growth factor-β, triglyceride, ET-1, creatinine, HO-1, AST, and ALT
in human participants. In clinical trials, curcumin has been used either alone
or in combination with other agents. Various formulations of curcumin, including
nanoparticles, liposomal encapsulation, emulsions, capsules, tablets, and
powder, have been examined. In this review, we discuss in detail the various
human diseases in which the effect of curcumin has been investigated.

THE ROLE OF COPPER, MOLYBDENUM, SELENIUM, AND ZINC IN NUTRITION AND HEALTH

Abstract
Copper, zinc, selenium, and molybdenum are involved in many biochemical
processes supporting life. The most important of these processes are cellular
respiration, cellular utilization of oxygen, DNA and RNA reproduction,
maintenance of cell membrane integrity, and sequestration of free radicals.
Copper, zinc, and selenium are involved in destruction of free radicals through
cascading enzyme systems. Superoxide radicals are reduced to hydrogen peroxide
by superoxide dismutases in the presence of copper and zinc cofactors. Hydrogen
peroxide is then reduced to water by the selenium-glutathione peroxidase couple.
Efficient removal of these superoxide free radicals maintains the integrity of
membranes, reduces the risk of cancer, and slows the aging process. On the other
hand, excess intake of these trace elements leads to disease and toxicity;
therefore, a fine balance is essential for health. Trace element--deficient
patients usually present with common symptoms such as malaise, loss of appetite,
anemia, infection, skin lesions, and low-grade neuropathy, thus complicating the
diagnosis. Symptoms for intoxication by trace elements are general, for example,
flu-like and CNS symptoms, fever, coughing, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, anemia,
and neuropathy. A combination of observation, medical and dietary history, and
analyses for multiple trace elements is needed to pinpoint the trace element(s)
involved. Serum, plasma, and erythrocytes may be used for the evaluation of
copper and zinc status, whereas only serum or plasma is recommended for
selenium. Whole blood is preferred for molybdenum. When trace element levels are
inconsistent with medical evaluations, a test for activity of the suspected
enzyme(s) would support the differential diagnosis. Furthermore, it is important
to differentiate whether trace element deficiency or toxicity is the primary
cause of the disorder, or is secondary to other underlying diseases. Only
successful treatment of the primary disorder will lead to complete recovery. In
the event of sample contamination during collection or analysis, the physician
may be misled by falsely elevated results. Royal blue top evacuated tubes
containing negligibly low concentrations of the trace element or acid-washed
plastic sterilized syringes should be used for blood, serum, or plasma
collection. Powdered gloves must be avoided. When possible, mineral supplements
are not to be administered to the patient for a minimum of 3 days prior to
sample collection. Serum and plasma specimens are to be transported in
acid-washed polypropylene and polyethylene tubes. Analysis is performed in a
controlled environment to minimize or eliminate contamination. During analysis,
all laboratory wares should be acid-washed for decontamination. A detailed
description of these precautions may be found in reviews by Aitio and Jarvisalo
and by Chan and Gerson. Copper and zinc analysis on serum and plasma are
commonly performed by flame atomic absorption spectrometry, inductively coupled
plasma-atomic emission spectrometry, and inductively coupled plasma-mass
spectrometry. Serum and plasma selenium levels are determined by graphite
furnace atomic absorption with Zeeman background correction and neutron
activation analysis. Molybdenum levels are best determined by neutron activation
and highly sensitive inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The reader is

BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITIES OF GINSENG AND ITS APPLICATION TO HUMAN HEALTH

Ginseng is a medicinal plant widely used for the treatment of various
conditions. The pharmacological effects of ginseng have been demonstrated in
cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and have been used for promoting
immune function, central nervous system (CNS) function, relieving stress, and
for its antioxidant activities (Jung and Jin 1996). The root of Panax ginseng C.
A. Meyer, which is known as Korean or Asian ginseng, is a valuable and an
important folk medicine in East Asian countries, including China, Korea, and
Japan, for more than 2000 years. Panax is derived from the word “panacea,” which
means a cure for all diseases and a source of longevity as well as physical
strength and resistance. As the use of traditional Chinese herbs for medicinal
and dietary purposes becomes increasingly popular in Western countries, sales of
P. ginseng are increasing in North America and Europe as well as in other parts
of the world.

The major bioactive components of P. ginseng are the ginsenosides, a group of
saponins with dammarane triterpenoid structure (Huang 1999). Almost 50
ginsenosides have been isolated from P. ginseng root (white and red ginsengs),
and novel structures continue to be identified, particularly from Panax
quinquefolius (American ginseng) and Panax japonica (Japanese ginseng) as well
as their berries (Gillis 1997; Yoshikawa et al. 1998; Attele et al. 2002;
Christensen 2009). In this chapter, we review the structural and pharmacological
properties of ginseng, and its active constituents, including ginsenosides,
polysaccharides, and polyacetylenic alcohols. The pharmacological and clinical

THE EFFECT OF AN AQUEOUS ELECTRICIDAL SOLUTION ON GENERAL WELL BEING

: YOU DECIDE

Abstract
Solution4USA’s dietary supplement, referred to here as “ELECTROCIDE™,” is a new
type of aqueous nutraceutical which is antipathogenic in nature due to pathogen
specific electrical charge properties. Thousands of people have been treated
with this product when delivered through an existing network of medical
professionals validating its efficacy and safety. Using FDA guidelines,
“ELECTROCIDE™” was evaluated for wellness benefits as a potential
investigational drug under medical supervision using 52 volunteers (Group1: 15
and Group2: 37) in an institutional setting (The Lovelady Center (TLC) in
Birmingham, Alabama) using quantitative measurements of vital signs along with
two qualitative self-reported questionnaires. The results indicate a highly
significant improvement in vital signs and a significant reduction in various
physiological and emotional conditions.

At the start of the study, the average temperature and oxygen values were
subnormal, indicating poor health status, whereas, by the end of the study,
vital signs were all normal. During the study, a cohort study (proof of concept)
was conducted with 14 individuals, in the TLC general population, who were
identified and diagnosed as COVID-19 positive. After 6 days (on average) of
“ELECTROCIDE™” administration, a shift of their COVID-19 status switched to
negative, and a complete reversal of symptoms were observed several times faster
than predicted by the CDC [1]. Of particular interest were oxygen levels because
a previous in-vitro pilot study indicated that dissolved oxygen levels doubled
with “ELECTROCIDE™” -It is postulated that this is an important mechanism
promoting an immediate sense of wellness.

Conclusions
The present study demonstrated the clinical benefits of shortterm use of
“ELECTROCIDE™.” Vital sign measurements indicated a significant change toward
normal body temperatures and overall increase in blood oxygen levels. In
addition, several other wellness parameters changed, including improvements in
energy, focus, and sleeping. Additional benefits were seen in daily surveys for
decreasing depression and anxiety, increasing happiness, improving breathing
(where a difficulty was initially observed), reducing congestion, and decreasing
chronic pain. Assessment of medical histories and additional notated conditions
were lessened in severity for asthma, heart and lung conditions, various pains,
stomach conditions, headaches, and skin conditions. There were no side effects
noted during the study. The results from this study, and the preliminary
observations from previous unpublished reports, indicate that there are many
positive benefits towards wellness that can be gained from “ELECTROCIDE™.”

AN INITIAL EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTIVENESS
OF A DIETARY SUPPLEMENT REGIMEN ON
THE EFFECTS OF POST-COVID INFECTION

Abstract
The prevalence of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) infection has been categorized as
pandemic since November 2019. Currently the
pandemic is slowdown, but now the prolonged COVID amid other derived medical
conditions are emerging. The identification of Coronavirus infection by various
assessments is well-known including initial diagnosis by symptoms. Some of the
symptoms have been seen to persist beyond the normal incubation time and some
additional symptoms have arisen to be termed as post-COVID-19 or Long COVID
which include loss of energy, memory issues, persistence of pain and
sleeplessness. In this study, 15 randomized adult post-COVID infection
participants were evaluated with a 3-day control followed by a 5-day
Electrocide® treatment protocol.

All the participants noted a significant increase in energy. 88% of the
participants noted a significant decrease in pain. 75% of the
participants noted a significant improvement in sleep. As in our previous
studies [1], the elimination of active COVID-19 infection
(diagnosed by fever, coughing, runny nose, brain fog, headache, and pain) can be
achieved in an average of 6 days with the use of Electrocide®. The current study
furthermore demonstrates the effectiveness of the Electrocide® as a 7-day
treatment for post-COVID infection. A specially formulated enzyme formula added
to the Electrocide® regime was also evaluated against a placebo control and it
was found that there was rapid recovery from a number of symptoms associated
with long haul, chronic COVID-19 as well as vaccine effects including peripheral
neuropathy, eye blurriness, and heart issues. The current study furthermore
demonstrates the effectiveness of the Electrocide® and enzyme formula as a 7-day
treatment for many of the symptoms of COVID-19, COVID-19 vaccine, and COVID-19
long haul.
