JOB SEEKERS ARE STRETCHING THE TRUTH ABOUT AI SKILLS TO LAND LUCRATIVE GIGS

A new survey by Resume Builder finds that 80 percent of recent job seekers who
exaggerated their AI skills got hired.Me 3645 Studio/Getty Images

With companies offering up to $900,000 for AI jobs, some job seekers are now
falsely claiming AI skills on resumes.

A new survey by Resume Builder found that nearly half of recent job seekers
exaggerated AI skills, with 80% of those applicants eventually being hired.

These overblown résumés are suddenly a thing as businesses seek any AI expertise
they can find.

According to LinkedIn’s latest Future of Work report, the share of global
English-language job postings mentioning "GPT" or "ChatGPT" increased 21-fold
since November 2022, the month ChatGPT debuted. The percent of LinkedIn members
listing AI skills on their profile increased ninefold from January 2016 to June
2023.

Of course, landing a job and not being able to perform comes at a cost. Sixty of
job seekers who lied about their AI skills and got the job said they faced
consequences as a result of lying, with 10% of that group eventually being
fired.

Those already in a workplace are not immune to the lure of a higher-paying
position, with nearly two-thirds of office workers also exaggerating their AI
skillsets despite less than a third frequently using such tools. Men, younger
workers, managers, and executives are the most inclined to to exaggerate.

Many workers, lying about their AI knowledge or not, plan to learn more about
the technology. Resume Builder found that 85 percent of surveyed worked intend
to either study artificial intelligence on their own or take an AI course.

Overstating AI skills may be partially driven by growing fears of job
replacement by artificial intelligence. Almost a quarter of U.S. workers are
worried that the technology will make their jobs obsolete, according to a recent
Gallup poll.
