Skip to main content My Dashboard EN VIDEO: THE 3 PILLARS OF COMPASSIONATE LEADERSHIP VIDEO: THE 3 PILLARS OF COMPASSIONATE LEADERSHIP Print Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive.-Dalai Lama There is little doubt your level of compassion contributes to success as a leader within your organization. Compassionate leaders are favored by the workforce and preferred by clients. About compassionate professionals, Positive Psychology says, “A compassionate leader is interested not only in motivating employees to gain profits for the company, but also helping them grow on a personal level. Such leaders have the far-sighted vision to hold genuine talents for the long-term and think about the greater good of the organization.” Furthermore, the studies of Dr. John Kabat-Zinn, professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, suggest compassionate leadership can be learned and practiced for continual improvement. As such, consider the three pillars of compassionate leadership as you begin to invest in improving your level of attentiveness to the well-being of those at work. The Cognitive Pillar Dr. Thupten Jinpa, chief translator for the Dalai Lama, advocates that opening your mind to understanding your colleagues' needs, problems, and personal situations is essential to practicing care. This pillar includes becoming more precise in your thoughts, removing prejudice, and being open to the viewpoint of others. The Affective Pillar The affective pillar, also referred to as the emotional pillar, recognizes how you sincerely feel about the people with whom you interact. In this pillar, you improve your ability to recognize emotional distress and acknowledge feelings. Working with someone who is emotionally aware makes people feel cared for and compels them to improve their performance. The Motivational Pillar Building strong learning connections is the basis of this pillar. The personal growth and professional development for yourself, your employees, and your colleagues are of utmost importance. Contributing to rich learning environments also shifts focus away from yourself to your colleagues. Watch: Need to construct or rebuild your pillars? Take a look as Dr. Sri Sarma shows you how to exercise your brain for optimal caring and kindness to get started. Need help with this video?
