AI ROCKETS AHEAD IN VACUUM OF U.S. REGULATION

Illustration: Lazaro Gamio/Axios

The overnight success of ChatGPT is kicking off a tech-industry race to bake AI
into everyday products and decision-making with little oversight from
government.

Why it matters: ChatGPT's uncanny ability to spit out stories, articles and
recipes is heating up AI awareness and concerns, yet there's almost no effective
U.S. regulation of the technology in place, raising fears it could promote bias,
misinformation, fraud and hate.

DEATHS JUMP AMONG PREGNANT WOMEN

Photo: Christopher Furlong/Getty Images

The number of women who died during pregnancy or shortly after giving birth
jumped in the first year of the pandemic, a study in JAMA Network Open shows.

Why it matters: While pregnancy-associated causes were still the leading cause
of death, the jump in mortality between 2019 and 2020 was largely not related to
the pregnancies themselves.

FOOD INFLATION SLOWED DOWN LAST MONTH — BUT THE RELIEF MAY NOT LAST

Data: BLS. Chart: Kavya Beheraj/Axios

The meteoric rise in food prices slowed slightly in December, per a new Axios
analysis — but prices were still up more than 10% year-over-year, as groceries
and restaurants gobbled up a larger-than-usual amount of Americans' spending.

Why it matters: Grocery bills are one of the most powerful ways in which many
Americans experience inflation.

Why it matters: The Memphis footage prompted emotional responses from people
around the country, but in the ever-changing South, they were also painful

TRUMP'S SLEEPY START TO 2024

Photo: Scott Eisen/Getty Images

SALEM, New Hampshire — Former President Trump's first campaign swing of the 2024
campaign generated little of the excitement that has long defined his glitzy
political rallies.

Why it matters: From party officials to state legislators, there wasn't a
visible show of support for Trump's 2024 bid among rank-and-file New Hampshire
Republicans in attendance.

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) told NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday that he was not

Driving the news: The release of harrowing footage of police officers fatally
beating Nichols has sparked renewed calls for police reform from some quarters.

CNN's "State of the Union" Sunday that "the hypocrisy just grabs you by the
throat."

Driving the news: House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) formally removed
