The Glock 17 (Gen 3) is a standard frame 9mm pistol that is standard issue for
many law enforcement officers and military personnel all over the world due to
its accuracy, reliability, low weight, and large magazine capacity. The G17 and
compact 9mm G19 Glock models are by far the most popular among Glock enthusiasts
and offer the most aftermarket components, upgrades, and accessories.

A competition version of the G17 is available as the G34 model and features a
lighter trigger pull, 0.83" longer barrel and slide with a window cutout and
extended distance between the sights. Aftermarket parts for the G34 model are
also readily available.

A long slide version of the G17 is offered by Glock as the G17L model and uses a
1.54" longer slide and barrel. The G17L is much less common than the G17 and G24
models so while barrels can be found, slides typically need to be sourced second
hand.

Top 5 Glock G17 Upgrades

If you are building a new Glock pistol from individual parts or completing a
Polymer 80 Glock frame, the parts list above will produce a completely stock
Glock Pistol. While this is more than good enough for almost any application,
there is always room from improvement.

The five best and most affordable upgrades you can make to a standard Glock
pistol are an extended slide and magazine releases, a lighter trigger connector,
a set of night sights, and a trigger job. The extended slide release and
magazine release are easier to engage with your thumb and thus make releasing
the slide and dropping a magazine easier with a firm grip on the pistol. An
upgraded trigger connector and some time spent polishing the safety plunger,
trigger connector, firing pin, and trigger bar will make the trigger pull
lighter and smoother. Finally, a set of night sights will improve target
acquisition, especially in low light situations.

Glock G17 Sight Upgrades

The most important upgrade you can make to any Glock pistol is to replace the
factory iron sights with something that offers better visibility and target
acquisition. For concealed carry applications, we recommend low profile "big
dot" sights but if you can work with larger sights, some high visibility night
sights are what we recommend most. For the ultimate pistol sight upgrade,
consider a red dot or RMR, but keep in mind that these are bulky and will
require an RMR cut slide (see below).

Glock G17 Trigger Upgrades

The trigger is the next most important upgrade you can make to your Glock pistol
by providing a smoother pull and cleaner break. While regular use and/or time
spent polishing the trigger components will improve the factory trigger pull,
aftermarket triggers offer immediate enhancements including a wider trigger body
for better purchase, reduced pre-travel, overall travel, and trigger reset, a
smoother uptake, and a crisp trigger break. For further improvement, look for a
trigger kit that includes a lighter trigger connector, polished safety plunger,
lighter striker spring, and a lighter striker. Finally, for a perfectly fine
tuned trigger, look for an aftermarket trigger with adjustable pre-travel and
over-travel.

*Note that the factory trigger and trigger bar are one assembly and removing the
locking pin will destroy the factory trigger. We highly recommend replacing them

Glock G17 Slide Upgrades

Aftermarkert slides offer a range of improvements over the stock Glock
components including an RMR cut for a red dot sight, deeper serations for a
better grip and heat disiption, modifed ejection ports, reduced weight, match
grade tolerances, and advanced coatings for improved durability and service
life. A basic slide will be made of standard grade 416 stainless steel and
feature an RMR cut. Advanced Glock slides are machined from extra strong, heat
treated, aerospace grade 17-4 stainless steel, have an RMR cut with an included
cover, are precision machined for improved performance, and coated for wear
resistance.

Coatings and Finishes Phosphate/Parkerize - A phospate coating is a cost
effective way to protect metal from corrosion and wear.
Nitride/Melonite - The Nitriding process case hardens, strengthens, and improves
the corrosion resistance of the surface.
PVD - Phisical Vapor Deposition applies a thin layer of titanium (or other hard
metal) to the to surface of metal.
DLC - A PVD coating of carbon, titanium, and nitrogen that creates an extra hard
Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) finish.

Tools Needed to Build and Service a Glock Pistol

Thanks to their simple design, Glock pistols are very easy assemble,
disassemble, service, modify, and upgrade. For basic work, all you need as a set
of brass punches and a bench block, although, we highly recommend a Glock
armorers tool that includes a front sight screw wrench. While changing or
adjusting the rear sights can be done with a brass punch, a proper sight
installation tool is well worth the cost to do it right and prevent damage to
the components. Finally, with extended use, the channel liner in the Glock slide
will wear out and the only correct way to remove the old one and install a new
one is by using a Glock channel liner tool.
