HOW JOEL BITONIO AND WYATT TELLER BECOME THE FOCAL POINT OF THE BROWNS’ BRUTAL
GROUND ATTACK

CLEVELAND, Ohio — After three weeks, the foundation of the Jacoby Brissett-led
Browns offense is a brutal and relentless ground attack led by guards Joel
Bitonio and Wyatt Teller. That run game is starting to open up the short passing
game and some deep shots of play action.

Cleveland’s creative run game features inside and outside zone, pin and pull
edge runs, and counter action with the guards out in front paving the way for
Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt. Early in the season, the Cleveland tailbacks have
492 combined yards on 98 carries and five touchdowns. More impressive, Chubb is
averaging a staggering 5.5 yards per rush so far in 2022.

Teller and Bitonio were the focal points in all of the Browns’ run schemes last
week. Whether it was frontside or backside, a double team to a linebacker,
one-on-one base block, gap blocking on short yardage situations, kicking out a
defensive end, or pulling around the corner, these two were the catalysts in the
29-17 win over rival Pittsburgh.

Against Pittsburgh, the Browns were very successful with their zone concepts and
running their counter scheme with an adjustment on the defensive end.

On their zone scheme, Teller and Bitonio consistently worked double teams with
the center and tackles. Following the double team, the guards did an incredible
job of getting to the second level and blocking the linebackers.

Below is a great look a zone run scheme from the Browns.

Right tackle Jack Conklin and right guard Teller are in charge of Larry Ogunjobi
and the #1 linebacker in the box. As they double Ogunjobi, the #1 linebacker
goes outside and Conklin will chip off and block him. If the #1 linebacker were
to go inside, Teller would chip off.

On the backside of the play, Pocic and Bitonio will double team to the #2
linebacker. Because the zone play is to the right, and Alualu is aligned to the
left of Pocic, he knows he will most likely come off on the double team and chip
to the #2 linebacker.

Teller, Bitonio, and the rest of the offensive do a great job of getting
vertical and horizontal displacement that creates great running lanes for Chubb
and Hunt. Chubb gained 9 yards on this zone play.

Slide 3

In the basic counter scheme, the backside guard will kick out or log the
defensive end. The backside tackle or tight end will read that block, and block
the #1 linebacker in the box

Below are two diagrams that demonstrate the difference in a kick out or log
block:

In the kick out below, the right tackle (RT) and right guard (RG) will double
team the 3 technique to the #2 linebacker in the box. The linebacker count
starts from the right side since the run play is going to right. As the
defensive left 5 techniques goes up field, the left guard (LG) will kick him out
and the tight end (TE) will wrap inside and get to the #1 linebacker.

Play 1

In the log below, the right tackle (RT) and right guard (RG) will double team
the 3 technique to the #2 linebacker in the box.

The linebacker count starts from the right side since the run play is going to
right. As the defensive left 5 techniques goes close down the line of scrimmage,
the left guard (LG) will log block him inside out and the tight end (TE) will
get wrap around and get to the #1 linebacker.

Play 2

One adjustment from the Browns in their counter game was to pin the defensive
end inside and use the quickness, power, and athletic abilities of Bitonio and
Teller to get all the way around the corner and block second- and third-level
defenders.

Below is a great look at the Browns pinning the end on Chubb’s big 36-yard run.

On a normal counter play, left guard Bitonio would usually pull to kick out or
log defensive end Malik Reed. On this particular play, tight end David Njoku
will pin Reed inside, allowing Bitonio to get out and around and block safety
Terrel Edmunds. Chubb easily breaks the tackle of unblocked corner Ahkello
Witherspoon.

What we learned

Regardless of the run scheme that is called, Bitonio and Teller are usually at
the point of attack for all of Cleveland’s successful gains. They create massive
running lanes for the best backfield combination in the NFL.

The Browns have created an identity rooted in physical play which is allowing
Brissett to play to his strengths.

Lance Reisland is the former coach at Garfield Heights High School, where he
spent 18 seasons as an assistant for his father, Chuck, and four as head coach,
from 2014 to 2018. In 2018, his team finished 11-1 and appeared in the OHSAA
Division II regional semifinals. That team went 10-0 and made history as the
first Garfield Heights team in 41 years to have an undefeated regular season
along with beating Warren G. Harding for the first playoff win in school
history.
