Lincoln looks like a great dog! Legs too long to be a turnspit dog. Travel buddy

ANY FASCISTS NORTH OF RICHMOND?

—K.T.

That surprise hit song,Rich Men North of Richmond, reminds me of the late Angelo
Codevilla's great piece from 2010 on America's Ruling Class, somehow. Glenn
Reynolds called it the best article on American politics this century. But it's
too much for me to tackle today. Even though it is really pertinent to Rich Men
North of Richmond.

This weekend, I have also been thinking about a friend who has recently been
characterized as a "fascist" on social media, with her job threatened. She's
okay for now, thanks to a lot of support from other people.

And I happened to run across a fascinating piece from 2020 by Codevilla on
Mussolini, the original fascist, and the true nature of fascism. I thought it
would be worthwhile to get a little deeper into it. Because "fascist" is no
longer a movement. Now it is an epithet. While those hurling the epithet may not
care what it actually means, some young people might respond to a little
education.

Barbie was called a fascist by a tween in that too-pink movie this summer.

School started this week here. That means school board meetings, with lots of
opportunities for people to be labeled as fascists. And the media is trying to
convince us that next year's presidential election is the thing which must
dominate our lives. You could be called "fascist" pretty much no matter who you
support (bleaah).

Mussolini and Fascism

Codevilla's 2020 essay, The Original Fascist, From movement to epithet is
elegantly written and it is hard to pick out highlights, but here goes:

> Today, the adjective "fascist" is an epithet -- often mixed promiscuously with
> "white supremacist," "sexist," etc. -- that the ruling class uses to besmirch
> whoever challenges them, and to provide emotional fuel for cowering,
> marginalizing, and disempowering conservatives.
>
> This maneuver consists of defining fascism in terms of unpopular ideas,
> political practices, and personality traits observable in many times and
> places; then, having cited Hitler's Nazi movement as fascism's quintessence,
> of pinning those deplorable characteristics on the intended targets. This
> reductio ad Hitlerum aims at no less than to outlaw conservatives. As the
> Washington Post's Jennifer Rubin exclaimed: "these people are not fit for
> polite society.... I think it's absolutely abhorrent that any institution of
> higher learning, any news organization, or any entertainment organization that
> has a news outlet would hire these people." And the New Republic explains "why
> fascist rhetoric needs to be excluded from public discourse." The
> establishment doesn't seem to realize that they are preaching some of
> fascism's practices.

> This essay looks behind fighting words to fascism's reality. Although Benito
> Mussolini, fascism's artificer and personifier, died discredited in 1945,
> fascism's socio-political paradigm, the administrative state, is well-nigh
> universal in our time. And as the European and American ruling class adopted
> Communism's intellectual categories and political language, the adjective
> "fascist" became a weapon in its arsenal.
>
> We begin with how fascism developed in Mussolini's mind and praxis from 1915
> to 1935, how it was hardly out of tune with what was happening in the rest of
> the Western world, as well as how it then changed and died. After considering
> how fascism fit in the 20th century's political warfare doctrines, we explore
> its place in contemporary political struggles.
>
> (emphasis mine)

One thing this essay does is show several differences between Nazism (including
its devotion to ideology) and Mussolini's Fascism.

Mussolini - a few highlights.

These are not the only interesting facts about his life:

> Mussolini was radical, talented, ambitious, insatiable. He fashioned fascism
> out of the ideas and circumstances of his time.
>
> In 1883, his socialist father, a blacksmith, named him for the most radical
> revolutionary of the time, the Mexican Benito Juarez. His middle names were
> those of Italy's most radical socialists. But Benito was also raised to revere
> the liberal republicans who had unified Italy. . .

> . . . Since age 18, he carried the official title "professor." But teaching in
> small towns strained his leftist political advocacy and his personal
> ambitions, including sexual ones. He was a "chick magnet." Also because he was
> not about to let himself be drafted into the king's army, he emigrated to
> Switzerland in 1902.
>
> While supporting himself as a stonemason, he learned German and French,
> studied philosophy, in part at the University of Lausanne. . . He was active
> in socialist circles, both Italian and international, giving speeches to
> workers and helping to organize strikes -- which got him expelled. He got to
> know Vladimir Lenin, who later chastised Italian socialists for letting such a
> talent leave their ranks.
>
> Back in Italy, taking advantage of an amnesty for having evaded the draft, he
> served for two years in the army's elite Bersaglieri corps.

He knew Lenin?

> By 1915 he had also married, and fathered a son by one of his mistresses. He
> had become Italian socialism's brightest star.
>
> The socialist movement's adherence to Karl Marx's dictum "the workers have no
> fatherland" had led to the expectation that the masses would not lend
> themselves to war among nations, and is among the reasons why many believed
> that the Great War would not happen. But when it did, rank-and-file socialists
> in all nations dragged all but fragments of their respective parties to
> support the carnage. So long as Italy stayed out of the war, Italy's socialist
> party was the major exception, along with Russia's Bolshevik faction. In 1911,
> Mussolini had campaigned against Italy's war in Libya. In August 1914 he wrote
> a fiery editorial, "Abbasso la guerra!": Down with the war! By November,
> however, he was arguing that entering the war would complete Italy's
> unification by taking the Austro-Hungarian empire's Italian-speaking regions,
> and make possible a host of beneficial social changes. . .
>
> In December, he committed socialist heresy by writing that class struggle is a
> bad idea because the nation is more important than social class. He called his
> few scattered followers fasci, bundles, of individuals. The word recalled the
> bundles of punishing rods and axes that ancient Rome's lictors bore for the
> consuls. Hence he labeled the movement "Fasci Rivoluzionari d'Azione
> Internazionalista" and its members "Fascisti." In 1915, when Italy entered the
> war, as most of the party remained faithful to doctrine, and as Mussolini
> further identified with popular sentiment, the party expelled him and his
> Fascisti and did its best forcibly to silence them.

> The war, and his own military service, had impressed upon him of what human
> beings are capable when acting as a disciplined mass. All over the world,
> people had produced more things, made greater sacrifices for their countries,
> than anyone had thought possible. European elites had been worshiping the
> state's architectonic powers since the time of Louis XIV's ministers (Louvois,
> Vauban, Colbert). G.W.F. Hegel, following Napoleon, had made patriotic worship
> of the scientifically administered, progressive state the political essence of
> modernity. Mussolini's vision of Italy followed from that. "The bureaucracy is
> the state," he said.
>
> "When the nation's interests are at stake," Mussolini explained, "all
> particular interests, whether the proletariat's or the bourgeoisie's, must be
> silent." "All know that Benito Mussolini is an individualist," he declared.
> But, as regards the nation, "[Mussolini] is utterly disciplined." The state
> personifies the country, and disciplines its several elements to its service.
> "Soon, we will be the state." "We do the bureaucracy the highest honor and
> raise it to a level above that which it occupied under previous governments by
> making it into an army of co-belligerents, which works toward the same end."
> He said that Catholicism too must be brought into the nation's service in
> order to revive the Italian people's millennial tradition of greatness. Doing
> all this would take sacrifice, perhaps war, as had the struggle for
> independence in the previous century, and as the Great War had reawakened
> national consciousness.
>
> By year's end, fascism was personified by thousands of street warriors who
> cheered their "Duce" (Leader), and who seemed to live the poet Gabriele D'

Doing honor to the bureaucracy? This does not sound like Hitler.

I've seen Italian bureaucracy in action. It doesn't have much staying power.

Fascism was an Italian movement

Codevilla makes the case that fascism was an Italian movement which is now dead.
After the parliament gave up its power to the executive, Mussolini's word became
law. This should make us very uneasy here in the USA.

Mussolini's economic program and comparisons to the New Deal are described
(remember Liberal Fascism?)

Mussolini's downfall includes his meeting with Hitler. Many features of fascism
were tied to Italian history and culture. You'll need to get into the essay to
see this. The expansion of the Administrative State in many countries seems to
me to be its contribution to the world.

Other academics started formulating their own "F-scales" to describe people they
didn't like as fascists. But they are really just parroting Stalin.

Are the Rich Men North of Richmond impervious to reason?

Music

There was one criticism of Rich Men North of Richmond that led people to
characterize the artist as mean: a line criticizing welfare. In response, a
couple of people posted excerpts from this piece on welfare in Appalachia, the
Big White Ghetto:

> This is about "the draw."

 * A key feature of NFTs that never actually worked no longer works. (The Verge)

They're talking about royalty payments, which are supposed to pay the creator
of an NFT (the article talks about the "artist", another disconnect) every
time an NFT is sold, just like in the real world where such royalty payments
are enforced by the Secret World Government's Unicorn Death Squads.

Which is to say, nothing in the real world works this way, and it never
worked for NFTs either. You could set it up to work on specific marketplaces,
but anyone could just not sell their NFTs on those marketplaces.

 * AI could be the saviour software companies need. (Tech Crunch)

Or unicorns, one of those two.

Worth noting that when the article says "saviour" it means "insanely
unethical tool for milking more money out of customers trapped in
subscription plans for what used to be a one-time purchase".

 * In the market for a rather large and somewhat expensive tablet running Linux
   - and not the Android variety either, but a choice of distributions including
Ubuntu and Mint? The StarLite Mk V might be what you're after. (Liliputing)

   With a 12.5" screen it's not pocket-friendly, but the 2880x1920 resolution is
nothing to complain about, and that's paired with an Intel N200 CPU - so yes,
it can also run Windows, 16GB of RAM, and up to 2TB of storage. Which is
user-replaceable, like recent Microsoft Surface devices. It doesn't say but
it's safe to assume it uses an M.2 2230 SSD.

 * Speaking of tablets that can also run Windows, the Lenovo Legion Go is one.
   (WCCFTech)

This is a handheld gaming device - like the Steam Deck - but with detachable
game controllers so you could in theory just use it as a tablet.

It will be powered by AMD's Z1 CPU - all these devices are, except for the
Steam Deck itself - and will come with... Uh, that's all the details we have.

 * Remember the days when phones came with headphone jacks and microSD slots,
and even, sometimes, replaceable batteries? Nokia apparently does, because
the G310 5G has all of those. (Liliputing)

   And it costs $186.

It comes with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, which are both adequate for a
budget phone, and the CPU has two A76 cores and four A55 cores, which should
also be fine. (A70 series cores are much faster than A50.)

The main camera is a 50MP autofocus, with an 8MP selfie camera.

And you can buy a replacement screen for $55 and swap it yourself if you
   happen to drop it.

Only real shortcoming is that screen, which is a 720p model and not 1080p,
but given all the other good points I think this could be a solid little
device for anyone who wants a phone and not a status symbol.

On sale in the US next week.

 * 25% of Gen Z is retarded. (The Verge)

They don't trust mainstream media - wise - so they instead get their news
from TikTok and find themselves distressed that nobody is investigating Katy
   Perry for murdering a nun.

   > A recent study by Google's Jigsaw unit, published alongside the University
   > of Cambridge and Gemic, found this to be the case on TikTok as early as
   > 2018 – the year it debuted in the US – with a participant investigating a
   > rumor that Katy Perry had killed a nun.
   > "They were disappointed to find no stories from major news sources that
   > definitively answered this question," the study says. "They went to TikTok
   > and concluded that if Katy Perry fans hadn't weighed in, the story must not
   > be true. They trusted Katy Perry fans, who engaged with and reported on her
   > activities daily, to know the truth."

So yes, there are even worse places to get your news than The Verge,
   incredible though that may seem.

Just running some errands in Switzerland.

Why did the baby cross the road? A little harrowing but everything's fine, don't
even worry about it.

Another baby rescue. Tense but the baby is saved.

This is gross but fascinating. This is one very blocked pipe. I think that must
be Jonah Goldberg's toilet.

Some people have a good sense of their surroundings. And then there's this
woman. (And, to be honest, me -- I'm barely aware myself.)

Man revives puppy by giving it CPR as its worried mom-dog looks on.

Apparently tying knots with your tongue is something people can do in real life.

Now we're cooking with fire.

NORTH CAROLINA OVERRIDES LIBERAL GOVERNOR'S VETO TO BAN TRANSGENDER PROCEDURES

A small victory.

A federal court has ruled that schools are allowed to secret transition the
gender of other people's children, and parents have no right to challenge that
policy in court.

> On Monday, a federal court ruled that a a group of parents could not challenge

>
> The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 that three parents in the

They dismissed for lack of standing. They claim that parents only have the right
to even sue if their children are transgender. So you have to wait until they
cook your children's brain before you have any recourse.

I think this might be reversed, unless the federal judiciary really believes you
don't have a right to object to the policies in compulsory government schools
until they're halfway through transitioning your children.

America's First Female Admiral -- and boy, I tell you what, what a looker! --

Did I say "national"? Well yes, but he also broke the world record for "women's"
powerlifting. That still has to be certified by world "women's" powerlifting
authorities.

Wow, what a proud moment.

In some good news, Dallas "Pride" is cancelling its planned "Night of 1000 Drag
Queens" citing lack of public support.

The drag queens wanted to protest a law that forbids them from putting on
"sexualized" shows for children.

That's the hill they want to die on.

But they're not into children or anything. It's just that this is insanely
important to them. For... unspecified reasons.

COUNTRY PROTEST SONG BY OLIVER ANTHONY RACKS UP 19 MILLION YOUTUBE VIEWS IN 9
DAYS

—ACE

Michael Shellenberger sums up the case the left is making that he's an
inauthentic plant:

> There is nothing authentic about the viral country hit "Rich Men North of
> Richmond" by Oliver Anthony, say journalists. His real name is Christopher
> Anthony Lunsford. He is a "conservative industry plant, astroturfed into
> existence by all the Daily Wire freaks and some right-wing social media
> promoter," according to an online sleuth. "The entire concept was likely
> dreamt up in a Daily Wire/Con Inc laboratory," acknowledged a Trump supporter.
>
> But if it is just a deep folksy fake, it's a great one. Lunsford's song hit
> number one on the iTunes chart one week ago and was being streamed three
> million times daily as of last week. The music and lyrics have inspired a
> remarkably diverse audience of supporters, as shown by the video of reactions
> to Lunsford, spliced into a viral video by Matt Orfalea above.
>
> To be sure, Lunsford could be a one-hit-wonder. He himself is modest about his
> abilities. "There's nothing special about me," he wrote on Facebook. "I'm not
> a good musician, I'm not a very good person."
>
> All Lunsford did was produce a hit song, and yet over the last two weeks,
> journalists have been attacking him as a racist and far-right grifter.
>
> In truth, there's really only one thing in the song that might be reasonably
> considered conservative, and that's a single line criticizing welfare. There's
> nothing racist whatsoever in the song.
>
> And if Lunsford is a grifter, he's not a particularly good one. In his
> Facebook post, Lunsford said that he lives a 27-foot-long camper that he
> bought on Craigslist for $750. Its roof is a tarp.

The left is just attempting to destroy him because they don't like the lyrics of
the song:

> [Verse 1] I've been sellin' my soul, workin' all day Overtime hours for
> bullshit pay So I can sit out here and waste my life away Drag back home and
> drown my troubles away
>
> [Pre-Chorus]
> It's a damn shame what the world's gotten to
> For people like me and people like you
> Wish I could just wake up and it not be true
> But it is, oh, it is
>
> [Chorus]
> Livin' in the new world
> With an old soul
> These rich men north of Richmond
> Lord knows they all just wanna have total control
> Wanna know what you think, wanna know what you do
> And they don't think you know, but I know that you do
> 'Cause your dollar ain't shit and it's taxed to no end
> 'Cause of rich men north of Richmond
>
> [Verse 2]
> I wish politicians would look out for miners
> And not just minors on an island somewhere
> Lord, we got folks in the street, ain't got nothin' to eat
> And the obese milkin' welfare
>
> [Verse 3]
> Well, God, if you're 5-foot-3 and you're 300 pounds
> Taxes ought not to pay for your bags of fudge rounds
> Young men are puttin' themselves six feet in the ground
> 'Cause all this damn country does is keep on kickin' them down
>
> [Pre-Chorus]
> Lord, it's a damn shame what the world's gotten to
> For people like me and people like you
> Wish I could just wake up and it not be true
> But it is, oh, it is
>
> [Chorus]
> Livin' in the new world
> With an old soul
> These rich men north of Richmond
> Lord knows they all just wanna have total control
> Wanna know what you think, wanna know what you do
> And they don't think you know, but I know that you do
> 'Cause your dollar ain't shit and it's taxed to no end
> 'Cause of rich men north of Richmond
>
> [Outro]
> I've been sellin' my soul, workin' all day
> Overtime hours for bullshit pay

I feel all of this:

Lord, it's a damn shame what the world's gotten to
For people like me and people like you
Wish I could just wake up and it not be true
But it is, oh, it is

And so they're trying to destroy this guy -- for writing lyrics they don't like.

Ya Boi Zach pointed out that the press doesn't write reports any more. They
write only two kinds of propaganda: Puff pieces, and hit pieces. And they don't
even wait to collect the facts before choosing which they're writing. They know
going in.

So leftist life-ruiners and defamation merchants are claiming that his viral
success is actually due to, get this, bots.

Bots and Macedonian Content Farmers? Russian hackers?

Boy they just have that one move, huh?

> Is viral sensation Oliver Anthony too good to be true? Too "right" to be true?
> Or an authentic working class hero, which is something to be?
>
> Since the Virginia native's "Rich Men North of Richmond" song began taking off
> from out of nowhere less than a week ago, the Appalachian country-folk singer
> has been acclaimed by freshly minted fans as a phenomenon of the people and
> accused by detractors of harboring ugly right-wing attitudes or suspected of
> being an "industry plant."

I've heard another viral sensation accused of being an "industry plant." This
annoying Stronk Empowered Feminist group, the Tramp Stamps. The term is pretty
vague. It claims that someone who is a nobody and then suddenly gets famous
wasn't a total, complete nobody, but actually had some experience in the music
industry and had a connection or two here or there.

It's kind of a stupid charge because literally everyone who makes it in any
industry has some connection to it. If you're a country musician, even if you're
a nobody, I bet you've played some small Nashville bars, if only on a Monday.

Does that mean that an out-of-nowhere nobody isn't an out-of-nowhere nobody?
Well, no. Obviously a few people heard of Oliver Anthony before last week --
again, maybe just people who go to bars in his hometown, but I'm sure he's had
some small-scale local success.

The idea is that someone the entertainment industry, which cannot stop tripping
over their own feet and losing hundreds of millions of dollars every movie, is
somehow so smart and capable that they know that if they pretend an
almost-nobody is a complete nobody, they can gin up a Viral Sensation story
which will make the almost-nobody a huge somebody.

This is stupid. People are idiots and these fucking morons are stepping on my
last nerve with their constant stupidity.

> The suspicions of progressive musi fans have largely to do with the fast

>
> What's known about Anthony, who has a minimal news or paper trail up to this

>
> But if an artist is known by the fans they keep, the highest-profile fans
> Anthony has quickly accumulated are very much on the right side of the aisle
> -- insta-supporters like former Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake,
> Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, firebrand commentator Matt Walsh, former Mumford

>
> Whether Anthony really is an ideologue in good old boy's clothing remains to
> be seen.

Weird how no one on the left, like Beyonce, is ever suspected of being an
"ideologue" despite packing their "music" with overt propaganda.

No one on the left is ever an ideologue and certainly not an extremist. Why,
they're all just centrist moderates who only believe in human values and common
sense. Just ask them.

Just ask Jake Tapper, for example.

> When he does stick with social issues, he doesn't seem like a political
> scientist, exactly: The only three "issues" he addresses in his plaints
> against politicians are high taxes, welfare queens and child trafficking. His
> focus on the latter, which is the sole topic he addresses in his YouTube
> monologue, has led to the suspicion that he may harbor or represent QAnon
> views, since that is a key bugaboo of that movement, although he has been
> limited in how conspiratorial he has publicly gotten.

Oh no, not that. The last big unexpected hit the left attempted to crush and
kill was also accused of pushing the "QAnon conspiracy theory" that child
trafficking is real. Now this guy brings up the conspiracy theory that Jeffrey
Epstein had an island which he stocked with underage girls for the delectation
of his wealthy well-connected Democrat palz, and we all know how completely
untrue that conspiracy theory is.

> "I wish politicians would look out for miners / And not just minors on an
> island somewhere," he sings, a slightly confusing couplet that seems to
> indicate belief in a government cover-up having to do with Jeffrey Epstein.

Newsflash, they covered up for him for decades. They still are covering up for
him.

Oh lookie here at what I just found: The former Attorney General for the Virgin
Islands (location of Pedo Isle) says the Democrat governor pressured her to
grant special favors to his good pal Jeffrey Epstein.

Does that mean that this isn't a QAnon conspiracy theory? Or is the leftwing
groomer media still going to insist this is all made up?

How about if mega-bankers JP Morgan are also involved?

> The former U.S. Virgin Islands attorney general revealed in court documents
> made public Monday that the governor of the territory pressured her to give
> convicted child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein special treatment.
>
> In July statements under oath, Denise George testified that Democratic Gov.

>
> "My thoughts about that even then, in particular then, it did not sit right

Above: Exhibit C, for "Conspiracy Theory"

I'm a little sick of the Pedophilia Deniers of the leftwing groomer press, who
invent conspiracy theories about these crimes not actually happening but all
being an illusion of QAnon.

Maybe they're being fed these crazy conspiracy theories by RUSSIAN BOTS.

It's not harmless when it takes you 30 minutes to fall back asleep.

LAW SCHOOL ORGANIZATION HOLDS CONFERENCE ON HOW TO VIOLATE THE CONSTITUTION AND
EVADE THE LAW AND CONTINUE PRACTICING HARDCORE RACIAL DISCRIMINATION

—ACE

Of course. The law does not apply to the lawless left.

They are the aristocracy. They make the law, they do not suffer it.

> The Association of American Law Schools (AALS) held a conference in July
> discussing how higher education institutions can continue to racially
> discriminate, following a ruling by the Supreme Court banning race-based
> admissions policies, according to videos reviewed by the Daily Caller News
> Foundation.
>
> In June, the Supreme Court ruled that Harvard University and the University of
> North Carolina's use of race-based admissions policies is unconstitutional,
> halting the practice in all higher education institutions. In early July, AALS
> held a conference featuring several panels and speakers who suggested
> institutions use recruiting tactics, diversity statements as well as "data and
> analysis" to increase racial diversity.
>
> ...
>
> "A lot of us have looked this problem square in the eye before, or this issue,
> and have come up with creative solutions to maintain the kinds of classes that
> we want," Cary Lee Cluck, University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law
> Assistant Dean, said during the seminar. "This is just another moment in time
> where we have to stop and reassess."
>
> Kristin Theis-Alvarez, assistant dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at the
> UC Berkeley School of Law, noted Berkeley has a four-page personal statement
> that was a "direct outcome" of California's Proposition 209 in 1996, which put
> a stop to affirmative action in the state, according to the seminar. The

> questionnaire and diversity statement rather than explicitly asking for race
> during the admissions process, Theis-Alvarez said.

And they're pushing the "personal statement" as the only criteria for admission
because it allows black students to identify as such in official application
materials. Previously, these schools claimed that Asians just didn't have "good
personalities" and discriminated against them; now they'll just say "the
personal statement was boring and didn't have the kind of passion I was looking
for."

> "In the past, applicants have included information about such things as gender
> identity, sexual orientation, race and ethnicity, disability, socio-economic
> background, being a first-generation college student or graduate student,
> being a student parent a re-entry student, their geographic diversity or
> ideological diversity and others," Theis-Alvarez said.

Harvard, UMass, and Tuft's are all similarly scheming to subvert the law.

They're employing the same "tell us you're black in your personal statement and
how being black means you're black and have black perspectives on matters of
black diversity" tactic previewed at the conference discussed above.

> Harvard, UMass and Tufts hopefuls are being asked to give details about their
> upbringing, community and what makes them 'diverse' on application websites

> Harvard, UMass and Tufts hopefuls are being asked to give details about their

> thinly-veiled attempts to skirt the legislation.,

I like black music, black athletes, and black comedians.

Am I diverse now?

Oh no I can't be, because I'm white. The "background" statement is just a signal
to look at my picture and verify my race.

But this is the basic idea: We won't admit students based on race. Wink. We'll
just admit them on their "diverse" background features and interests, which have
nothing (wink to do with race.

> ...
>
>
>
> Colleges can also consider how an applicant's race has shaped their personal
> experience, as detailed in students' application essays or letters of
> recommendation, the guidance states.

That's the Biden Administration once again defying the courts. The Supreme Court
said they could not admit based on race, and Biden is telling them: Keep on
admitting based on race. Just call it their "personal experience in living as a
member of the black race."

> Students applying to Harvard are now faced with a question about their

CONGRESS INVESTIGATING WHETHER THE DEMOCRATS ARE USING NONPROFITS AND FOREIGN

MAUI'S EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT DIRECTOR REFUSED TO ACTIVATE THE WARNING SIRENS TO
ALERT PEOPLE DURING THE WILDFIRES;
THAT ADMINISTRATOR NOW RESIGNS

—ACE

This is Democrat governance at its... most typical.

In fairness, he has something of a point. Sort of.

> Maui Emergency Management Agency Administrator Herman Andaya today defended
> his experience and the decision not to activate emergency sirens warning Maui
> residents and visitors about the fast-moving fire that destroyed the historic
> town of Lahaina last week Tuesday.
>
> Andaya said he did not regret his decision in response to a reporter's

> gone mauka," he said, adding that people would have headed directly into the
> flames. Andaya added that there were no sirens located on the mauka or
> mountainside of Maui where the fires were spreading.

The problem with that claim is that no one actually goes immediately running for
the hills. Usually they get into their cars, 95% of this are equipped with a
piece of high-tech gear called "a radio." And on this "radio" device, they will
hear "news reports" telling them that the danger is posed by wildfires, not a
tsunami. And those "news reports" will mention official government guidance
regarding how and where to take shelter.

The death toll of the fires is at 111 and climbing as they find more bodies.

He has now resigned.

> "Today Mayor Richard Bissen accepted the resignation of Maui Emergency
> Management Agency (MEMA) Administrator Herman Andaya. Citing health reasons,
> Andaya submitted his resignation effective immediately," the County of Maui
> stated.

No word yet on whether the director of their water management system, who did
not release water to reservoirs and did not make that water available to
firefighters, will resign or if he will continue insisting that water should not
be "used" but simply "revered."

LOL: ERIC ADAMS COMPLAINS THAT KATHY HOCHUL ISN'T HELPING HIM ENOUGH WITH
ILLEGAL ALIENS, AND SHE REPLIES THAT HE SHOULD SHUT UP AND PUT ON HIS BIG-BOY

Whoever it was who decided to start busing illegals to blue jurisdictions --
either Abbott or The Meatball -- is a bona-fide genius.

Because it's cracking the Blue Coalition wide open.

That may sound like Gay Pablum, which it is, but in leftist therapeutic culture,
"a lack of coordination has led to a failure to foster productive interpersonal
interactions" is basically calling someone the N-word, the F-word, the C-word
and the R-word all in one.

And Eric Adams whines: "It's not faaaiir!"

No but really he is whining that "it's not fair" for the state to drop all of
problems of illegal immigration on one jurisdiction.

Like, for example, El Paso. Or Arizona. Or any border state or border town.

Oh, and there was another subway stabbing by a lunatic with a miles-long rap
sheet who is, for unknown reasons, still allowed to roam the streets attacking
citizens.

Eric Adams ran as the law and order candidate. What a joke.

> A panhandler stabbed a 76-year-old stranger who declined to give him money
> outside Manhattan's Herald Square subway station, leaving the victim seriously
> wounded, police said Monday.
>

> medics to Bellevue Hospital in serious but stable condition.
>

He was later caught -- molesting a 21-year-old woman.

More from Beege Wellborn. From the NY Post:

> Cops caught up to him at the Times Square station, where he was arrested and
> charged with misdemeanor assault, the sources said.
>
> Police said they then linked Trotman -- who has a slew of arrests dating back

>
> Trotman was also charged Monday with forcible touching for allegedly grabbing
> the buttocks of a 21-year-old woman walking at Wall Street and William Street
> in Lower Manhattan back on July 12, cops and sources said.

Oh, and he's a racist homophobe. This would get him five years in prison alone
if he were white, but of course he's not, so... just another multicultural
addition to our ever-strengthening stew of diversity.

> "Caucasians are ignorant people," he ranted when a Daily News reporter asked
> about the stabbing. "They suck d-- in their sleep. That's what happened."

In leftist utopia Chicago, drivers won't be able to get gas at night because
constant crime and armed robberies are forcing gas stations to shut down after
sunrise.

This is about Indiana gas stations, but they neighbor Chicago.

> An Indiana town is requiring gas stations to close overnight in response to an
> uptick in violent crime across the city.
>
> City leaders in Hammond, about 25 miles south of Chicago, voted 7-2 Monday in
> favor of requiring the gas stations to close between midnight and 5 a.m., FOX

>
> The measure will affect 37 gas stations. City leaders said violent crime --
> often involving firearms -- have occurred at gas stations late at night and in
> the early morning hours over the last several years.

And there was another brazen daylight looting of an LA Nike store. Don't get me
wrong -- I want Nike robbed into bankruptcy.

But this is civilization dying.

Here's a fun little TikTok about the nation's sudden descent into barbarism and
savagery.

As mentioned yesterday, Comer is demanding that NARA (the folks who cooked up
the classified document case) turn over all emails from these pseudonymous

further Democrat-protecting redactions.

At Redstate: leftwing CNN pundit John Avlon says thatBiden is "very obsessed"

I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, "Well, Biden may be filthily

THE MORNING RANT: ELECTRIC VEHICLES ARE EXPLODING IN POPULARITY!!

—BUCK THROCKMORTON

I frequently mock electric vehicles for their propensity to spontaneously
combust, but these things are seriously scary. We just keep hearing more
disturbing stories about EVs that burst into flames, many while they are parked,
turned off, and not charging.

Here are some more of these stories since the last time I discussed the topic.

*****

“Mercedes EQE Loaner Car Burns Down Inside Florida Homeowner's Garage” [Inside
EVs – 7/24/2023]

> A Mercedes-Benz EQE Sedan caught fire and burned to a crisp inside a Florida
> homeowner's garage last week, severely damaging the building.

The link directly above includes an embedded video of the house burning from
this ferocious EV fire.

> The 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE 350+ Sedan was in the garage when it caught fire on
> July 19. According to Jennifer Ruotolo, the EV was a loaner from Mercedes-Benz
> while her own car was getting serviced. She told News4Jax that the luxury
> electric sedan wasn't even charging when it burst into flames – she doesn't
> own a home charging unit.

The header picture up top is what the electric Mercedes looked like after it was
pulled out of the garage.

As we’ve discussed before, even very minor fender-benders often cause EVs to be
considered total losses by insurance companies, because there is no way to know
what damage was done to the battery, and it doesn’t take much to turn a lithium
ion battery into a potential bomb. Ponder that the next time you rent an EV or
consider buying a used one, since you have no way of knowing if that car had
some minor impacts or curb encounters that might have damaged the battery.

The World Rallycross Championship was shut down last month due to a destructive
EV fire, again, from a vehicle that was not being driven.

A few weeks ago I covered the story of electric truck manufacturer Nikola, and
how it tweeted out that foul play was suspected when one of its semi-trucks
caught fire, which soon engulfed other trucks around it. Of course, an
investigation revealed that there was no foul play. The problem involved the
batteries.

Apparently, once EV batteries are damaged, they’re like those wacky birthday
candles that re-ignite even after you blow them out. One of those damaged trucks
caught on fire again at Nikola’s headquarters.

Undamaged EVs are alread terrifying enough (there is no way would I ever allow
one to be parked in my garage) but if an EV was in a wreck or otherwise damaged,
where the heck do you store it knowing that it could erupt in flames at any
time. If I were a wrecker driver I would not want to ever tow a damaged EV.

Back to Nikola, you may recall that I put it at the top of my “EV Manufacturer
Dead Pool,” predicting it would be the next to go out of business, following
Lordstown Motors’ bankruptcy.

Well, Nikola is getting closer. It just suspended all sales of battery powered
trucks and recalled all those on the road.

“Nikola Recalls All Battery-Electric Trucks, Halts Sales After Fire Probe”
[Reuters – 8/14/2023]

> Nikola said on Friday it was recalling all the battery-powered electric trucks
> that it has delivered to date and is suspending sales after an investigation
> into recent fires found a coolant leak inside a battery pack as the cause.

I have an obligation to acknowledge when I get things wrong. As noted above, I
predicted that Nikola would be the next EV manufacturer to go bankrupt. I got it
wrong, it was actually a Biden-touted electric bus maker that was next in line.

Proterra, Electric-Bus Maker Touted by President Biden, Goes Bankrupt [WSJ –
8/08/2023]

> Proterra, an electric bus maker that has been lauded by President Biden for
> its U.S. manufacturing operations, has become at least the third
> electric-vehicle business to file for bankruptcy in roughly the past year.

[h/t to Mr. CBD for bringing this one to my attention. I think Proterra was his
entry in my EV Dead Pool.]

GM has been plagued by exploding EVs, so they are now trying to figure out why.

I know! I know! [Buck waves hand furiously in the air.] I know the answer to
this one!!

It’s when lithium-ion batteries are used as a power source for a vehicle rather
than using a gasoline powered engine.

You’re welcome, GM.

*****

I believe that others on the blog have already covered this next story, and I am
not going to joke about it, because this awful EV conflagration took a man’s
life.

“Burning Car Carrier Towed to Temporary Location off Dutch Coast” [Reuters –
7/31/2023]

> A burning car carrier off the Dutch coast has been towed to a new location
> away from shipping lanes as part of an operation to salvage the ship, the
> Dutch public works and water management ministry and local media said on
> Monday.
>
> The freighter, which was travelling from Germany to Egypt when the blaze broke
> out on July 26…
>
> Ship charter company "K" Line said on Friday there were 3,783 vehicles on
> board the ship - including 498 battery electric vehicles, significantly more
> than the 25 initially reported.
>
> EV lithium-ion batteries burn with twice the energy of a normal fire, and
> maritime officials and insurers say the industry has not kept up with the
> risks.

Shipping companies and insurance companies have a day of reckoning coming
regarding EVs. They are under pressure from the eco-left to embrace electric
vehicles, but EVs are explosively dangerous, they are almost impossible to
extinguish when they catch fire, and they are so fragile that the slightest
damage to an EV will require it to be totaled.

THE MORNING REPORT — 8/18/23

—J.J. SEFTON

Good morning, kids. Yesterday's editorial brought a lot of heated discussion,
especially towards the tail end and after the art thread was posted. The
gravamen of my disquisition is that for people to agree that America as founded,
or at least the last vestiges of same were snuffed out in the wake of the 2020
election theft yet still engage in the same sort of retail party politics as if
it's business as usual is just plain schizophrenic.

At the heart of this is the divide between those who stand by Donald Trump as a
candidate out of a sense of misguided loyalty and those who think it's time to
move on to someone else, primarily Ron DeSantis as a candidate. You have to put
that out of your mind and most especially the notion that there is going to be a
free and fair election come November of next year. It's not going to happen.

The most optimistic assessment I can make is that there is a slight chance that
whoever is the nominee will somehow miraculously overcome the now
institutionalized fraud courtesy of the 2020 lockdowns and barely eke out a win,
that eventually does survive a challenge in SCOTUS. But, given what is at stake
and the players involved, you can bet your ass that they will not allow that to
happen. So this bickering about loyalty to Trump or ditching him for his
failures and flaws in favor of DeSantis to me is pointless.

And to be fair, Trump does himself absolutely no favors, either as a candidate
in a kabuki theater production of either The Producers or Bananas or even as
someone who you want to get behind as a leader of a movement.

Ugh. Just fucking ugh. As old Rummy himself once quipped, “You go to war with
the army you have, not the army you might want or wish to have at a later time.”

For better or worse, instead of a Ghandi or MLK or dare I say Christ, we have le
mauvais homme orange. And I have a nasty suspicion that even Trump doesn't quite
get the nature of the situation he finds himself in. He certainly didn't with
his horrendous staffing choices. While you can chalk that up to sabotage or
perhaps a naivete about who and what dwells in D.C. and their loyalties, how the
hell after taking more knives to the rear than Julius Caesar joining in with the
O'Jays on "Backstabbers," does he support Ronna Romney McDaniel to chair the
RNC?

He better wake up and smell the coffee because as he goes so goes the rest of
us. And that has zero to do with elections and everything to do with gulags.
That admonition and warning is not just for him but for every other candidate
(of which only two others strike me as legit), GOP politician and
pundit/commentator out there. Okay, stop laughing.

This is not a game anymore. It's deadly serious. It's nice to see pundits and
such writing articles that declare the charges brought against Trump are so
ridiculous and baseless that they'll be laughed out of court. But for them to
not understand that the anti-American evil in the very act of bringing those
baseless, nakedly political charges in the first place is a tell. With judges
like this Tanya Chutkan, along with Amy Berman Jackson, Beryl Howell and the
horrendous Emmet Sullivan and a jury pool that will eagerly go along to convict
or will otherwise be helped by cadres of Antifarians who know where they live to
get their minds right, who'll have the last laugh?

Trump is going to prison. Quite possibly death row. Make no mistake. Then what?

There are some Pollyanna-ish undertones to this essay but the thrust of the
piece is important. Considering who and what the Left is, what they have already
done, what they are capable of, and considering they are now within a red nether
hair's breadth of finally imposing the thousand-year Robert Reichhhhhhhhhhhh-uh
on us, what do you think?

Have a good weekend. See you tomorrow for the hobby thread. Be there. Aloha.

Top Story

 * Fools and money: Purchasers of ugly monkey jpegs - which is to say,
distributed database entries which are unique identifiers of digital images
of ugly monkeys stored on someone's server somewhere - are suing auction
house Sotheby's and ugly monkey jpeg purveyor Yuga Labs alleging that they,
which is to say the buyers of said ugly monkey jpegs, are too stupid to be
allowed out of the house without a leash. (Ars Technica)

And while this is undoubtedly true, it might be hard to establish as a point
of law that this idiocy is the fault of Sotheby's or of Yuga Labs.

   > Sotheby's sold a lot of 101 Bored Ape NFTs for $24.4 million at its "Ape
   > In!" auction in September 2021, well above the pre-auction estimates of $12
   > million to $18 million. That's an average price of over $241,000, but Bored
   > Ape NFTs now sell for a floor price of about $50,000 worth of ether
   > cryptocrurrency, according to CoinGecko data accessed today.

Or rather, don't sell at that price.

At least you can eat tulip bulbs.

 * Is the PCIe 5 Seagate Firecude 540 worth buying? (Serve the Home)

No. But it's less not worth buying than ugly monkey jpegs - about a thousand
times cheaper, for a start, and you actually own it.

 * Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella says AI is a tidal wave as big as the internet.
   (Bloomberg)

A tidal wave? As in, it brings nothing good, you can see it coming a mile
off, and you'd best seek high ground right away?

   Seems apt.

 * The iKoolCore R1 Pro is a four port 2.5Gb Ethernet router that measures 3x3x2
inches and includes a quad core Pentium N6005 CPU, 16GB of RAM, and up to 1TB
   of SSD. (Liliputing)

It also has HDMI, USB-C (and a second USB-C for power input), two USB-A
   ports, and a microSD slot.

This is all identical to the iKoolCore R1 non-Pro edition released a few
months ago except that this model has upgraded cooling and doesn't crash all
   the time.

   Which is a plus.

 * The Verge continues to descend into Musk-induced insanity. (The Verge)

Today's report is titled "Elon Musk is killing 'Environmental Twitter'" but
instead makes the case that environmental activists are mindless zealots who
will brook no opposition, or indeed anything but the most slavish support.

   Which is true.

Flashback: All the Stupid Things the Light Night "Comedy" Hosts Said About

I haven't even noticed that they're off the air. Jimmy Dore says he's noticed in
only one way: YouTube isn't flooding his recommendations with horrible "comedy
clips" from these apocalypse-level non-talents. I've literally never clicked on
one of their "comedy" clips so YouTube doesn't bother recommending them to me.

It's August and the FDA is just getting around to telling people not to use the
pregnancy tests manufactured by the failed Chinese lab in Fresno, taken over in
December by its main creditor/distributor with assets like unlabeled blood and
tissue samples and genetically-engineered mice moved to Reedley after an
electrical fire and code violations. In Reedley, the outfit was really shut down
in March. Pathogens on hand included malaria, dengue and many others. From what
I read, users of a recalled pregnancy tests in, say, March should do a repeat
test with another brand in case the recalled test was inaccurate. The 15
products recalled in August follow 2 FDA recalls of COVID tests before the
Reedley lab was shut down. "The city of Fresno denied the company's application
to reopen near the Fresno Yosemite International Airport earlier in August."

The fat butterball pudsucker Philip Bump smugly explains that "subjective news,"
news crafted to suit a particular narrative, has replaced "real news" like the
kind he creates
This plus-sized dickkneader really has no idea he's part of the biggest
"subjective news" network in the country, he's just completely, autisticly
unaware
You will hate him if you watch it. Then you will hate me for linking it, and,
ultimately, you will come to hate yourselves for having clicked on it.

Live: Bob Iger spins Disney's failure in shareholder earnings call
LOL, Disney Minus lost 500,000 subscribers in the last quarter (domestically,
they're claiming they gained subscribers when you include foreigners who pay
very little for the service) while Hulu gained three million... that means that
Disney will have to pay Comcast more when it is compelled to buy out Comcast's
one-third share in Hulu...
Iger read a prepared bullshit statement and then turned the call over to his CFO
(or something like that). We'll see how badly (and perilously, from a legal
point of view) Iger lies in anwering shareholder questions.
This says Disney lost 10 million subscribers.

The second part of Tucker's interview with Devon Archer.
I said it was "long and only intermittently newsworthy." That's half-true. It
isn't filled with instant news you can use in the Biden Crime Family
investigation. But is revealing about how The Regime uses its useless,
talentless get to rake in money from foreign governments and gangsters:

> Devon Archer's long interview is worthy of watching. It's basically the story
> of "How I Became a High Class Govt Con Man." And it's prevalent in DC in both
> parties. Int'g note, how everyone craved attention from pension funds bc they
> have so much money to invest, and with political supervision only. Reminded me
> of the movie "The Irishman" about Jimmy Hoffa's reign and how the mob and
> everybody else wanted access to the Teamsters pension fund, for the same
> reason.

Tucker interviews Hunter Biden's "business" partner Devon Archer
It's like pulling teeth but eventually he admits that what Hunter Biden brought
to the table was Joe Biden, and he had no other qualification for these
big-money deals besides "being the guy who knows The Guy." Again, after pulling
teeth, he admits that Joe Biden knew he was talking to Hunter's foreign

David Azzerad answers Jonah Goldberg's third-favorite smear of actual
conservatives

> Faced with such a record of failure, any even-remotely competent movement
> would have long ago revised its strategy. Not Goldberg and his friends.
> They're sticking to the stale platitudes of mainstream fusionist conservatism:
> Freedom good! Big government bad! It hasn't worked since the New Deal, but
> it's bound to start working any time now.

But it does work, David! It does the most important thing it's intended to do:
