Charnow * Share on Facebook * Share on Twitter * Share on LinkedIn * Share on Reddit * Print * Share by Email Men who used marijuana 1 to 7 times per week had significant 38% lower odds of kidney stones compared with nonusers. Source: Getty Images Men who use marijuana regularly are less likely to report having kidney stones, according to a recent study. An analysis of 2009 to 2018 data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) revealed that male marijuana users had significant 28% lower odds of reporting kidney stones compared with nonusers after adjusting for multiple variables, Xin Wei, MD, of West China Hospital, Sichuan University in Chengdu, Sichuan, China, and colleagues reported in Frontiers in Pharmacology. Men who used marijuana 1 to 7 times per week had significant 38% lower odds. Those who used marijuana more than 7 times per week did not have reduced odds of kidney stones. The investigators found no association between marijuana use and kidney stones in women. “To our knowledge, this study is the first cross-sectional study to explore the association between marijuana use and the risk of kidney stones from the population-based NHANES dataset,” the author wrote. Advertisement The study included 14,324 participants aged 20 to 59 years with a complete history of marijuana use and kidney stones. Of these, 26% reported having used marijuana during their lifetime. The incidence rate of kidney stones was 7.8%. CharnowAugust 30, 2023 Administrative Tasks Required to Pay for Cancer Care May Prompt NonadherenceAlexandra Della Pia, PharmD, MBA, BCOPSeptember 12, 2023 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Continue Reading With respect to study limitations, the investigators pointed out that due to the cross-sectional design of the NHANES dataset, they could not explore a causal link between marijuana use and kidney stones. They also noted that information about marijuana use was self-reported, with no indication of the exact type and dose of cannabis. “The study appears to have been well done, and the data appear credible,” said David S. Goldfarb, MD, Clinical Chief of Nephrology and Director of the Kidney Stone Prevention Program at NYU Langone Health in New York, who was not involved in the current study. “I don’t think the study can really provide a plausible mechanism for the effect in men, and the lack of an effect in women.” The finding that marijuana use beyond 7 times per week did not further reduce risk of stones was surprising, Dr Goldfarb said. He added, “Most of the marijuana use reported here is almost certainly smoking; it would be interesting to see if people using edibles, which has increased in the US, would have the same risk.” Reference Di X, Xiang L, Wang M, Wei X.
