SUMMARY * Series creator Nic Pizzolatto shares his thoughts on True Detective: Night Country, criticizing the decision to include the Tuttle family. * Pizzolatto makes clear that he has no involvement in the new series and that he can't be blamed for any issues viewers may have. * True Detective: Night Country has earned great reviews from critics but has had a more divisive audience response. Creator Nic Pizzolatto seemingly throws shade at True Detective: Night Country. Written and directed by Issa López, season 4 of the popular HBO crime drama anthology series is the first not to be helmed by Pizzolatto, who first brought the series to air in 2014. Jodie Foster and Kali Reis lead the True Detective: Night Country cast as Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro, respectively, two detectives investigating the disappearance of eight men from an Alaskan research station. Following the release of True Detective: Night Country episode 2 last week, Pizzolatto shares several new posts on Instagram, including a season 2 throwback image with Vince Vaughn. While the posts themselves are innocuous, Winter Is Coming spotted that the creator shares his candid thoughts on the new season of the show in response to users in the comments. Check out screenshots of his replies below: "Haha. So stupid," Pizzolatto replies to one user who questions why the season 1 Tuttle family is funding the Tsalal research station. In response to a question regarding whether he had any involvement in the new season, Pizzolatto replies: "I certainly did not have any input on this story or anything else. Can't blame me." "Matthew [McConaughey] doesn't show up, nor would he," Pizzolatto replies to a user who asks whether the season 1 Rust Cohle actor will be reprising his role. TRUE DETECTIVE: NIGHT COUNTRY'S DIVISIVE RECEPTION EXPLAINED The True Detective: Night Country reviews from critics are some of the series' best. The new season currently sports a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, which sets a new record for the show, beating the 91% of season 1. While critics evidently see the new season as a return to form after a lackluster season 2 and an improved but still somewhat undercooked season 3, the audience response is more divided. Season RT Critics Score RT Audience Score 1 91% 88% 2 47% 22% 3 84% 51% Night Country 93% 67% As seen in the chart above, the Rotten Tomatoes audience score for True Detective: Night Country sits at 67%. This score is certainly not terrible, and it's actually the show's second-best after season 1, but it's worth noting that this score was originally much lower. The new season seemingly became a victim of review bombing early on, and Lopez herself would address this on social media, encouraging viewers to leave their own positive reviews to counter-act this. All previous seasons of True Detective are currently available to stream on Max. While much of the negative response to season 4 could be genuine, there is reason to believe that review bombing may have occurred. Firstly, the series is led by two women for the first time, with previous seasons being particularly male-dominated. The fact that Pizzolatto himself is not involved could also be a sore spot for some viewers, with review bombing stemming from a sense of allegiance to the original creator. In any case, True Detective: Night Country has sported some impressive viewership numbers so far and has been an undeniable hit for HBO. Source: Nic Pizzolatto, Winter Is Coming TRUE DETECTIVE Anthology Mystery In this anthology series, each season follows a different detective or set of detectives as they forced to confront some horrific truths about their town and themselves. No matter the setting and characters, each detective must unravel lies and clues to solve the chilling mysteries around them.
