Shanghai imposed stringent pandemic restrictions it has long tried to avoid on
its 25 million residents that are likely to disrupt commercial activity well
beyond the city limits.

Local authorities said on Sunday they plan to lock down the city in two phases
over the next week and a half to try to control an outbreak of the highly
infectious Omicron variant of the Covid-19 virus.
