TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — You may recall our Better Call Behnken investigation into
COVID-19 testing fraud.

Medicare recipients received COVID-19 tests by the box-full that they didn’t
order and didn’t want.

Federal authorities have an ongoing investigation into that and have now
announced the unsealing of an indictment charging a South Florida man with six
counts of wire fraud and three counts of aggravated identity theft.

The United States Attorney’s Office, Middle District of Florida, is based right
in Tampa, and U.S. Attorney Roger Handberg says the office has several ongoing
cases.

The government claims the West Park man used the personal identifying
information of people incarcerated by the Florida Department of Corrections and
even used the names of deceased individuals in his claims.

Handberg says these cases depend on Medicare recipients to report potentially
fraudulent claims.

Medicare was bilked for millions of dollars in these unwanted tests. U.S.
Attorney Roger Handberg is in charge of of prosecution of these types of cases.

“That’s our money,” Handberg said. “That’s money that’s going to a specific
purpose which is to help people and to have people try to take advantage of
those opportunities for fraud. And that’s where we see in a lot of these cases.
These programs that are being taken advantage of are being negated in response
to an emergency.”
