WHAT IS A POE EXTENDER?

2429 Visits

A PoE extender, also known as a PoE repeater, is a device that extends the Power
over Ethernet (PoE) connection distance between the PoE-powered device (PD) and
the PoE injector or switch (PSE). This means you can power and connect
PoE-enabled devices, such as VoIP phones, IP cameras, and wireless access
points, over longer distances than the standard 328 feet (100 meters). PoE
extenders work by regenerating the PoE signal and extending it over an
additional Ethernet cable.

POE EXTENDERS VS. INJECTORS

PoE extenders and PoE injectors are both devices that can be used to power PoE
devices. However, there are some key differences between the two.

 * POE EXTENDER

A PoE Extender is designed to extend the range of a PoE connection. It can be
used to connect PoE devices to a PoE switch or injector that is located beyond
100 meters, and be powered by PoE.

 * POE INJECTOR

A PoE injector is similar to a PoE Extender in that they both provide PoE power
to the PD.  However, the PoE injector only received data from a network switch.
It is powered from a local AC or DC power source, and injects or adds power and
transmits the data over a single UTP cable.  The PoE-compatible device, such as
an IP camera or wireless access point, extracts the power it needs from the
Ethernet cable while also receiving data for communication.

HOW FAR CAN THE POE CONNECTION EXTEND?

When using PoE extenders, you can expect to add an additional 100 meters to the
overall distance with each extender installed. However, it's important to note
that each extender introduces some signal attenuation, and the actual extension
distance may vary based on the specific extender, cable quality, and the power
requirements of the connected devices.

TYPES OF POE EXTENDERS

There are two main types of PoE extenders: active and passive. While passive PoE
extenders employ capacitors to store and release PoE power, active PoE extenders
use their power source to magnify the PoE signal. Although active PoE extenders
are often more expensive than passive ones, they offer more reliable power
delivery and a larger range for PoE signals.

HOW TO EXTEND POE WITH AN ACTIVE POE EXTENDER

 1. Connect the PoE source (such as a PoE switch or injector) to the IN port of
    the PoE extender.
 2. Connect the PoE-powered device to the OUT port of the PoE extender.
 3. Connect the PoE extender to a power outlet using the provided power adapter.

HOW TO EXTEND POE WITH A PASSIVE POE EXTENDER

 1. Connect the PoE source (such as a PoE switch or injector) to one end of the
    Ethernet cable.
 2. Connect the PoE-powered device to the other end of the Ethernet cable.
 3. Connect the passive PoE extender between the PoE source and the PoE-powered
    device.

OMNITRON POE EXTENDERS

Omnitron PoE Extenders are unmanaged 10/100/1000BASE-T gigabit extenders that
function as both PD and PSE require no external AC power and enable the delivery
of data and PoE beyond the limitation of twisted pair copper cabling. Omnitron
PoE Extenders feature one PoE/PD port and up to two PoE/PSE ports and can be
powered by an IEEE 802.3at or High-Power (HPoE) 60W power source. They are
available in three operating temperature ranges: Commercial (0 to +50ºC), wide
(-40 to +60ºC), and industrial (-40 to +75ºC).

POE EXTENDERS APPLICATIONS

This application is showing a PoE Extender powering an 802.3at PoE camera and
achieving a distance of 200 meters (656 feet) between an 802.3at PoE PSE switch
and the camera.

POE DROP-AND-EXTEND APPLICATION

In this application, a daisy chain consisting of three Omnitron PoE Extenders is
powered by an HPoE 60W PoE PSE switch. PoE Extenders with one RJ-45 PoE/PD port
and two RJ-45 PoE/PSE ports are used to install PoE cameras at the first and
second PoE Extender sites. The daisy chain extends to the third PoE Extender and
to the final PoE camera for a distance of 400 meters (1,312 feet).

FAQS

HOW MANY POE EXTENDERS CAN I USE?

The power budget of your PoE switch or injector determines how many PoE
extenders you can utilize. A PoE switch or injector has limited power that it
can provide to PoE devices.  Each PoE extender typically draws around 5 Watts of
power as well, so you will need to calculate this into your power budget when
determining how much power needs to be delivered.

WHY USE POE EXTENDER?

Here are five top reasons to use a PoE extender:

 1. Extended Reach:
Overcome Distance Limitations: One of the primary reasons to use a PoE
extender is to extend the reach of both power and data signals over Ethernet
cables. This is particularly useful in situations where the standard PoE
distance of approximately 100 meters is insufficient.

 2. Flexible Deployment:
Versatility: PoE extenders add flexibility to the deployment of PoE-powered
devices. They allow you to install devices such as IP cameras, wireless
access points, and VoIP phones in locations that are farther away from the
    power source or network switch.

 3. Support for Higher Power Requirements:
Higher Power Delivery: In scenarios where devices require higher power
levels, such as PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) cameras or other high-power
applications, PoE extenders can be used to deliver the required power over
longer distances. Active PoE extenders, in particular, may be suitable for
    boosting power levels.

 4. Cost-Effective Infrastructure:
Reduced Cable Costs: Instead of running additional power cables alongside
data cables, PoE extenders allow you to use a single Ethernet cable for both
power and data. This can result in cost savings on cable installation and
    reduce cable clutter.

 1. 5. Overcoming Environmental Challenges: Outdoor Installations: In outdoor
installations or harsh environments where running separate power lines is
impractical, PoE extenders provide a streamlined solution. They enable
the deployment of PoE devices in locations where traditional power
       sources are challenging to access.

DO POE EXTENDERS NEED POWER?

Yes, PoE extenders need power to operate. They typically get their power from
the PoE switch or injector that they are connected to.

CONCLUSION

PoE extenders are a valuable tool for network administrators and IT
professionals. They can be utilized to simplify network management, eliminate
the need for additional power cables, and increase the range of PoE connections.
