PASSENGER TYPE
ADULT
All passengers over the age of 15 who are not eligible for a discounted fare
must purchase an Adult Ticket.
CHILD
Child tickets are valid for children under the age of 16. One child under the
age of 4 will be carried free if accompanied by and in the charge of a
fare-paying passenger, provided that the child does not occupy a seat to the
exclusion of another passenger. Where doubt exists as to the eligibility of a
child for a reduced fare, it is the responsibility of the passenger claiming the
child fare to produce evidence of age.
Children under 12 years of age will NOT be carried, unless accompanied by a
responsible person over the age of 16, on the following categories of Bus
Éireann services: All Expressway services - as detailed in Expressway timetable
booklet or Non-Expressway services where the intended journey of the child
passenger exceeds 50 kilometres.
STUDENT
Student Tickets are issued at discounted fares on production of current
International Student Identity Card (ISIC), or a valid Student Identity Card
issued by a recognised third-level college in the Republic of Ireland, but
otherwise have the same conditions of validity as ordinary Return Tickets. The
full list of colleges whose Student Identity Cards will be recognised by Bus
Éireann for entitlement to student fares is given in "Your Journey/Student
Travel" area of website.
TICKET TYPE
Return Tickets are valid for one outward journey on date of departure and for
one return journey based on the ticket type selected.
Single tickets are valid for one single journey on date of issue as shown by
fare paid and\or other details on the ticket.
10 Journey Tickets Valid for ten journeys for a period of seven consecutive days
inclusive of date of issue and including Sundays, for journey selected only. For
example a Weekly Ticket issued on Tuesday is valid up to and including the
following Monday.
Family Return Tickets are issued to family groups consisting of one or two
adults and up to a maximum of three children under sixteen years of age.

ABOUT SCHOOL TRANSPORT
The School Transport Scheme supports transport to and from school for children
who reside remote from their nearest school. The scheme is operated by Bus
Éireann on behalf of the Department of Education.

APPLYING FOR SCHOOL TRANSPORT
Applications for Primary or Post Primary School Transport Schemes must be made
online. The closing date for applications is the last Friday in April for the
forthcoming School Year.
Please note that only new pupils need apply, for example pupils starting Primary
school or moving to Post Primary School, or those who are changing home address
or school.
Details of all existing pupils who currently hold tickets are already recorded
and the email address provided in the registration process previously is used to
communicate with families each summer when it is time to pay the school
transport charges for the forthcoming school year.

TICKET FEES AND PAYMENT OPTIONS
The School Transport ticket fees are as follows:
Primary School Transport: €100 per child
New for School Year 22/23: For Account Holders with 3 or more children in the
Primary School Transport scheme, a maximum family charge of €150 will apply
Post Primary School Transport: € 350 per child
New for School Year 22/23: For Account Holders with 2 or more children in the
Post Primary School Transport scheme, a maximum family charge of €500 will apply
New for School Year 22/23: For Account Holders with 2 or more children on a
combination of the Primary & Post Primary School Transport scheme, a maximum
family charge of €500 will apply.
Family Account Holders have the facility of paying for School Transport in one
or two options; Full Year or Part Year. Details of these options are:
Option 1 – Annual Ticket:
Pay the full amount due (100%) on or before the last Friday in July. An Annual
School Transport Ticket for the full school year will be issued.
Option 2 – Part Year Ticket:
Pay half (50%) of the amount due on or before the last Friday in July. A ticket
will be issued that is valid for travel up to the last School day before the
Christmas Holidays.
You can make regular payments on your account and clear your balance on payments
due on your account on or before the last Friday in November. When payment has
been made in full, a second School Transport ticket will be issued valid until
the end of the school year.

Your School Transport ticket can be purchased online here.
Medical Cards
Account holders who have Eligible children holding valid medical cards (GMS
Scheme) should submit their child’s medical card details in order to avail of
the exemption from School Transport charges. You can check online to see if your
child’s medical card is valid.
CONCESSIONARY TRANSPORT
Children who are not eligible, under the terms of the schemes may apply to Bus
Éireann on a concessionary basis. The conditions are:
* that Bus Éireann determines that a suitable service exists to school or
education centre
* that the service has spare capacity
* that routes are not extended or altered, additional vehicles are not
introduced, larger vehicles or extra trips using existing vehicles are not
provided. No additional State cost is incurred
* that the appropriate annual charge is paid, Medical Cards are not applicable
Availability may vary from year to year and is not available on public scheduled
services. Concessionary transport cannot be guaranteed for the duration of the
school cycle.
Bus Éireann determines the allocation of the tickets when the number of
applications exceeds the number of seats available.
TERMS & CONDITIONS OF SCHOOL TRANSPORT
1. All applications are processed and eligibility is determined in line with
the rules of the Department of Education School Transport Schemes.
2. All passenger tickets are issued subject to bye-laws, regulations and
conditions contained in the publications and notices of or applicable to
Bus Éireann.
3. Purchase of a ticket is deemed to imply acceptance of these conditions.
4. Payment does not guarantee a seat on a School Transport Service. Those not
accommodated will have their payment refunded once seating has been fully
allocated.
5. No pupil will be allowed to travel without a current valid School Transport
Travel Ticket.
6. Any application for a refund where a ticket has been purchased and received
but is then not required, must be submitted online and the School Transport
Travel Ticket must be returned to your local Bus Éireann School Transport
Office (with the exception of those who cannot be catered for due to lack
of accommodation).
7. In the event that the School Transport Travel Ticket is mislaid, there is a
charge for a replacement ticket. This charge can be paid online and a
replacement ticket will be issued upon receipt.
8. School Transport Travel Tickets are not transferable.
9. School Transport Travel Tickets must be carried at all times when
travelling and must be produced for inspection by the driver or any
authorised official of Bus Éireann. School Transport Travel Tickets must be
surrendered to an authorised company official upon request, and in any
event at the end of the School Term.
10. School Transport Travel Tickets are only valid for travel between the
locations indicated on the ticket.
11. School Transport Travel Tickets may only be used for travel to and from
school on school days during the School Term.
The Terms & Conditions which apply to the purchase of tickets issued under the
School Transport Scheme may be amended at any time at the discretion of Bus
Éireann and/or the Department of Education.
PRIMARY SCHOOL TRANSPORT SCHEME
The Primary School Transport Scheme supports the transport to and from school of
children who reside not less than 3.2 kilometres from and are attending their
nearest national school, having regard to language and ethos.
For the purposes of school transport provision, ethos relates to the religious
ethos of minority religion schools, while language relates to the Irish or
English language. In practice this means that:
1. Children who, for reasons of their religious ethos, choose to attend their
nearest minority religion denominational school may be eligible for school
transport to that school, even if it is not their nearest school/li>
2. Children who choose to attend their nearest all-Irish school/unit may be
eligible for school transport to that school/unit, even if it is not their
nearest school
3. Children who choose to attend their nearest all-English school/unit may be
eligible for school transport to that school/unit, even if it is not their
nearest school

POST PRIMARY SCHOOL TRANSPORT SCHEME INFORMATION
The Post Primary School Transport Scheme supports the transport to and from
school of children who reside not less than 4.8 kilometres from and are
attending their nearest post-primary education centre/school.
Under the terms of the Department's Post-Primary School Transport Scheme
children may be eligible for transport where they reside 4.8 kilometres or more
from their nearest education centre, subject to limited exceptions relating to
ethos and language. While it is the prerogative of parents to send their
children to the post-primary school of their choice, eligibility for school
transport at post primary level is to the nearest education centre/school,
subject to limited exceptions.
For the purposes of school transport provision, ethos relates to the religious

TRANSPORT FOR CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL EDUCATION NEEDS
The purpose of the scheme is, having regard to available resources, to support
the transport to and from school of children with special educational needs
arising from a diagnosed disability.
Application forms should be completed and signed by the parent, school principal
and the Special Education Needs Organiser. Please visit the Department of

SCHOOL TRANSPORT APPEALS PROCESS
The School Transport Appeals Board is an independent body appointed by the
Minister of State at the Department of Education. The School Transport Appeals
Board examines and determines appeals against the school transport application
process regarding the provision of school transport services and/or grant aid
under the terms of the School Transport Schemes.

Decisions made by, or on behalf of, the Department of Education regarding the
provision of school transport services and/or grant-aid under the terms of the
School Transport Schemes may be appealed to the School Transport Appeals Board.

Bus Éireann adheres to the principles of the Data Protection Act, 1988 & 2003
when collecting, processing, storing and disclosing personal data.
Bus Éireann is the Data Controller with regard to personal data collected for
school transport applications. Applicants may access their personal data
following an access request under S.4 of the Data Protection Acts 1988 and 2003.
The personal data collected from you will be used by Bus Éireann to provide and
manage school transport services in accordance with the terms of the school
transport schemes. Bus Éireann may share your data with Third Parties solely for
the purpose of providing and managing the school transport services. Personal
data will be retained by Bus Éireann for the period during which school
transport services are provided and for a further period of up to 6 years.
