TESCO SHOPPERS PRAISE LITTLE-KNOWN TRICK TO GET FREE GROCERIES ON FOOD WASTE APP

Food waste app Olio distributes unwanted food from Tesco supermarkets to people
in need through a network of volunteers to save 5.6 million meals from going in
the bin

Supermarket giant Tesco has been praised by shoppers for a little-known in-store
feature that offers free food and reduces waste.

Thanks to a partnership with food waste app Olio, this year Tesco has saved 5.6
million meals from going in the bin.

That means 72,000 people have managed to benefit from the scheme, which many
Tesco shoppers may have not even noticed, the Manchester Evening News reports.

The scheme has provided 120 million meals since it was started five years ago.

It works by volunteers signing up to Olio as a " food waste hero " .

These people then have a short online training course, and are allowed to
collect unwanted food from nearby Tesco stores.

The tie-up with Olio means food that would otherwise be thrown in the bin is
redistributed (

They then take that food home and can share it with others using the Olio app.

“Tesco is committed to tackling food waste and we were confident our partnership
with Olio would help with that, but its impact has exceeded all our
expectations,” Tesco head of communities Claire De Silva said.

“For our partnership to have diverted more than five million surplus meals from
going to waste in its first year is a huge achievement and shows the strength of
the partnership between our store colleagues and Olio’s food waste heroes.”

Sainsbury's Bank could be sold for £200million - what it means for your cash

Olio co-founder Saasha Celestial-One added: “Our partnership with Tesco has been
a huge success this year, and we’re incredibly proud to have delivered so many
meals that would have otherwise been wasted to communities across the UK. Tesco
has been a true pioneer.

“But our work is far from done. We hope this partnership encourages other
businesses to follow suit and consider how they can take a more proactive
approach to minimising waste and supporting local communities. Just imagine what
we could achieve if every business followed their lead.”

Most of Tesco's unsold food goes to charity. In areas with no charity available,
Olio can collect food instead.

One shopper, Laura Gaga, recently told money-saving community LatestDeals.co.uk
: "I like to eat well for less and avoid food waste where possible, so I am
always on the lookout for discounted and free groceries."

She said: "Recently I was able to save money with a decent haul from the food
sharing app, Olio.

"The food waste hero was a volunteer who collected the surplus food from Tesco
and distributed it on the app.

"They only live a few miles away from me so it was very convenient to pick
everything up."

All of the food she got was marked down with a yellow sticker, but she got it
all for free.

Gaga said: "I got plenty of vegetables - butternut squash, a root vegetable
medley, a swede and two bags of parsnips.

"The butternut squash was £1.15 but Tesco had reduced it to 29p and it was free
of charge for me. The medley was originally £1.15 but it had been reduced to 29p
and I paid nothing."
