UPDATING MODELS TO MEET CUSTOMER NEEDS

Banking business models have not yet evolved to fully deliver a digital
experience that addresses the current and future needs of customers.

That model can be altered to create functional working groups of people
successful at collaborating and show success with IT innovation, then scale
their usage to the broader organization. These groups can help lead innovation
to meet those customer needs.

WHAT I WISH I KNEW IN MY FSI DAYS

The nature of collaboration can influence the project priorities, solution
functionality, contributors, and outcomes of a project.

Many of my colleagues really wanted to make an impact through their work. That
was their internal motivation.

THE IMPORTANCE OF IMPACT

I ended up switching from financial services to a technology company because I
was drawn to the impact technology had on creating change and knew I wanted to
help apply this technology to the broader financial services industry to impact
more people."

I’m able to quickly identify patterns to needs assessment and solution
recommendations because I’ve been in the troubleshooting position of many of
these pain points while simplifying technical jargon so all on the team can see
the vision forward.

WHAT I WISH I KNEW IN MY FSI DAYS

Simplifying the message for internal and external stakeholders allows for clear
communication and engagement, and let’s projects complete faster.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES FOR GREAT RESULTS

Managing the pace of change expected by customers and delivered by competitors
while assuring compliance to regulatory requirements can be very challenging.

Bringing teams together, learning to speak their business language or IT
technical speak, can help you overcome that. Create a conversation to better
understand what business objectives they are trying to solve, and how certain
technologies can add value in meeting their goals. Those steps will bring faster
success and better results.

WHAT I WISH I KNEW IN MY FSI DAYS

Asking questions of team members is a value versus a threat or sign of weakness.
Many times asking questions offers insight, context and time savings.

understanding which allows the best ideas to be heard and can be implemented
with consideration of constraints. This transparency will allow for realistic
expectations and better outcomes.

WHAT I WISH I KNEW IN MY FSI DAYS

can contribute, will result in the best solution.

WHAT'S HOLDING BANKS BACK

The hierarchy and organizational models. How they measure success by division or
group and some concerns about the changing landscape. There is a nervousness
about the industry's new direction and how that impacts roles and livelihoods.
Being able to collaborate and work together towards common goals makes a big
difference. Teams have great ideas, but executing it within the legacy hierarchy
is challenging.

WHAT I WISH I KNEW IN MY FSI DAYS

That networks and relationships are critical. You can’t underestimate the
relationships you build. As a young person, I didn’t realize that as much as I
realize and appreciate it now. I would have worked even more effectively by
focusing on those relationships. Slowing down to invest time with the teams so
they truly understand, and buy in, to the vision makes a big impact.

A KEY CHALLENGE IS THAT CLOUD COMPUTING IS AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE FUNDAMENTAL
TO THE FUTURE OF DOING BUSINESS. HOWEVER, THE INITIAL DECISION TO ADOPT CLOUD
SERVICES IS RARELY AN ORGANIZATION WIDE, COORDINATED EFFORT, CAUSING AD HOC
CLOUD INITIATIVES IN SILOS. LET'S CHAT ABOUT: CLOUD ADOPTION JOURNEY, RETURN ON
INVESTMENT, VALUE ENGINEERING, AND CLOUD-NATIVE DEVELOPMENT.

WHAT'S HOLDING BANKS BACK

The culture, technologists are not seen as strategic contributors. Technology is
one of the biggest assets to a bank, but without the skills to use them
effectively you don’t get the return on investment.

Be empathic and work to understand the constraints your IT teams face. They want
to deliver value but may need your help to clear the path to resources to do
that. Be a part of the process and review cycles.

WHAT I WISH I KNEW IN MY FSI DAYS

Open leadership. Being able to give feedback before a process was set or
implemented would have made what we did so much easier.

WHAT'S HOLDING BANKS BACK

“If it’s not broke, don’t mess with it” mentality. This hesitation to move to
newer technologies and processes that could work better - and are compliant -
slows growth. A small change to “what is possible” will create new opportunities
never thought possible.

Be open to change and conversations with that truly develop working
relationships.

WHAT I WISH I KNEW IN MY FSI DAYS

A healthy cultural balance between a “get it done” attitude and a laid back one
still allows for work to be completed without the same level of stress.

There is a lot of fear of getting something wrong, rightfully so. That fear
combined with security requirements and regulations makes it challenging to keep
up with new less regulated entrants.

BIGGEST OPPORTUNITY

Diversification of the market to include electronic money and participation in
global networks to make processes and collaboration easier.

WHAT I WISH I KNEW IN MY FSI DAYS

The benefits of working as larger teams versus smaller siloed groups. Being more
agile would’ve opened up new solutions to our challenges.

Remaining competitive by advancing customer experiences - which are being
defined by less regulated industries - with new technology while still getting
the advantages from the existing technology you’ve invested in is one of the
biggest challenges in financial services.

WHAT I LEARNED WORKING IN FINANCIAL SERVICES

Never forget who your customers are - both internal and external. If you can’t
see how they’d use something, ask them. It can be exciting to build cool
features, but if that doesn’t solve their problem, it’s not useful.

WHAT I WISH I KNEW IN MY FSI DAYS

How best practices from software development can be applied to IT infrastructure
management, and how agile methodologies and DevOps can improve how people work
together.

Transformations will always happen and you must continue to plan for change and
growth.

WHAT'S HOLDING BANKS BACK

Traditional processes and culture. Many are so large that changing those is a
time intensive effort that isn’t just a technology change. It’s a mindset shift.
Those doing it are leading the market. Start small with culture changes to
assess readiness and find the people who can help influence and lead that
change.

BUSINESS LEADERS WORKING WITH I.T. LEADERS

Be open and work to understand the impact of small changes. Architectures can be
complex and small changes can have multiple impacts. Partnering with IT will
help you as the plan is developed.

Processes and regulations are the greatest challenges. Often firms have the
skills and desire to innovate but internal processes slow them down.

BIGGEST CHALLENGE IN FINANCIAL SERVICES

People are doing digital transactions via their phones, not their wallets. Major
firms must compete but have to do so with regulation in mind. Firms must be
faster innovating to outpace their competitors and that can require new
perspectives.

WHAT I WISH I KNEW IN MY FSI DAYS

The mindset of other teams and why they do it the way they do so I could better
align teams to strategy and avoid roadblocks. And what great collaboration looks

THE FUTURE OF BANKING

Banking will be even more technologically led. Digital will be the norm,
automation and AI/ML will gain more traction with predictive analytics for
personalization. Needs will be met in seconds, maybe minutes; not hours or days.

ADVICE TO I.T. IN WORKING WITH BUSINESS LEADERS

Manage expectations by coaching business leaders with the realities of what
technology can do to support business goals.
