HGTV’s Fixer Upper is one of the most popular real estate reality TV shows of
all time. Chip and Joanna Gaines have become super famous thanks to their roles
presenting the super popular show, and celebs in their own right.

But when their marriage began to unfold, the truth about the dark secrets behind
the show’s façade began to come out. Let’s take a look at the secrets of this
beloved show that reveal the drama behind the scenes.





NOT A GREAT START



To many people, Chip and Joanna Gaines seemed like the perfect celebrity power
couple. Not only were they presenting one of the most popular shows ever
together, but they also clearly were both mega real estate experts, excelling in
everything they did.

But the truth was that their path to love hadn’t been easy. In fact, there were
problems even from the first date—when Chip turned up late and Joanna was
offended. Clearly, this was the beginning of a tumultuous relationship.





SLOW BURN



And that wasn't the only early sign that these two weren’t destined for a happy
life together. Apparently, after their first date, it was three months before he
called her again!

Apparently, this was because Chip has made a bet with his roommate not to be the
first one to call. He wanted to win this $50 bet more than he wanted a second
date with Joanna? Doesn’t bode well, does it.





MONEY PROBLEMS



Even though nowadays, Chip and Joanna Gaines are known as a super successful
couple and real estate experts, the truth is that before landing their gig on
the TV show, they were actually going through some pretty dire financial
situations.

They had no money at all, so thankfully the show came at exactly the right time
for them. But actually, it wouldn't be the end of their troubles.





TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE



We can only imagine how stressful it must have been for the couple, going
through their financial difficulties before the show came along.

So it’s funny now to think that when Joanna first told Chip about the show, it
was simply beyond his imagination—and he thought it was a hoax! He believed her
in the end, otherwise, they might never have made their names on the show. But
was that actually lucky or not? It would actually turn out to be a mixed
blessing.





TURNING TRAITOR



As you can imagine, being offered a super lucrative deal to star in a TV show,
while in the middle of serious financial difficulties, must have been an
incredible relief and brilliant opportunity for the Gaineses.

But Chip Gaines didn't exactly go about this in the most honorable way, because
he cut his two business partners out of his real estate business—without telling
them about the upcoming show—so he wouldn't have to share any of the big bucks
with them. Harsh.





COURT ORDER



However, Chip’s former business partners weren’t going to take this betrayal
lying down. They felt that since they had been just as important in building the
business, they should have had a chance to benefit from the show too—and he had
deliberately cheated them out of that chance.

They sued him for $1 million, and Chip bashed them, saying they hadn’t contacted
him for years, until the show became a huge success.
